Schindler Elegant is a series of low-cost traction elevator model designed for the low to mid rise building segment in Asia, specifically residential and basic commercial buildings. There are at least four known models; Elegant Classic which is a geared model (with worm gear) with a machine room above the shaft, Elegant MRL which is a gearless machine room less model (Schindler claimed that it could also have machine room as an option), Elegant MR which is a traditional geared model with machine room, and Elegant GL which is a gearless version of the MR model. All of these models were manufactured in China by Schindler China, and were only available in Asia (Japan is an exception).

Not all of the four models above were available in all Asian markets. In Southeast Asia, Hong Kong and Taiwan, only the Elegant Classic and Elegant MRL were available in there, which were sold by Jardine Schindler Group. In China, Schindler sold the Elegant MRL, Elegant MR and Elegant GL [1] [2] . The model was also available in South Korea, where it was known as Elegant MRL and Elegant MR [3] [4] .

In Australia and New Zealand, it was not available because the model was simply not sold in Australia while in New Zealand the model was substituted by the Schindler 100 P , which has similar specifications as Elegant MRL [5] .

Elegant Classic was discontinued sometime in the late 2000s but the Elegant MRL was continued to be made until 2012. Schindler Elegant was succeeded by the Schindler 3300 AP model, which is the current machine room less model for low to mid rise buildings since 2008.

Because Schindler Elegant is a low-cost elevator solution, it had a basic interior option catered for the need of residential and basic commercial buildings. The elevator car interior wall could be plain stainless steel or finished with five different colors of powder coated paint or three different kinds of decorative laminated sheets. There were four designs of ceiling available; three of them are the same designs used in other Schindler models (such as 300 P , 500 P , 700 , etc.) while the other one is a standard design with only a painted base, a single rectangle light and a fan grille. Rubber is used for the flooring, and was available in two different colors; dark grey and light grey. Round handrail and a mirror (mounted on the rear wall) were most likely available as option. It was also possible for clients to decorate their elevator car with their own decor (usually supplied by other party), provided that the materials do not exceed 30% of the car load.

The fixtures used in the Schindler Elegant elevators are known as E-Type . These fixtures weren't made by Schindler, but rather by Shanghai STEP . The buttons, known as the E2 series, are square with a raised rim. Illumination are in the middle and on the halo/edge and lights up when the buttons are pressed. Floor indicators features a two digit LED 16-segments display with a directional arrow above the number, often next to the number, for the inside indicator. The arrow will flashes everytime the elevator stops at a floor. These elevator also plays distinctive chimes.

In South Korea however, the E-Type fixtures were not used in the Korean spec Schindler Elegant MRL/MR elevators. Instead, D-Line fixtures, which had been used in the Schindler 300 P elevators were used [4] . Some elevators also use local made generic fixtures [3] .
