With that said, you can still expect more people in El Nido than in many other parts of the Philippines. Every morning, bangkas traditional boats leave the bay of El Nido and set out to visit these islands — leaving their guests in awe of the natural splendour they possess. We fell in love with the raw beauty; the contrast between the hard rocks and the soft sand, and of course the perfect turquoise water. If you ask travellers who have visited El Nido what they think of the city, you will most likely get very different answers. One reason to dislike El Nido is the fact that it stands in stark contrast to most other places in Palawan and in the Philippines where you typically only see very few tourists and no souvenir shops. As El Nido is practically built around tourism, there are lots of tourists and souvenir shops. Of course there is. Before we visited El Nido, we had heard that the city is not worth a stop and that there are too many people and too much noise. El Nido is a tourist destination and if you want to experience authentic Filipino life, it may not be the best place to go. However, if you need a couple of days with western food options , beautiful day trips to bounty islands and happy hours on the beach , El Nido is the place to be. Compared to other places we visited in Palawan, we liked El Nido for the high variety and quality in restaurants as well as for the better coffee. Two nights can also work if you just swing by to go on a boat trip. If you find a nice place close by without the hustle and bustle which is definitely possible , a longer stay can undoubtedly make sense. During the day , the city and the beach are quiet as most visitors leave El Nido for boat tours or trips to other nearby beaches. The internet connection is sporadic like in the rest of Palawan , and power outages are a daily occurrence. There are a few ATMs in El Nido, but due to the power cuts, they do not always work and they also seem to run out of money frequently. It is therefore highly recommended to carry plenty of Philippine pesos or exchangeable currency like USD from home. First time visitor? Here are 7 things they did not tell you about traveling to the Philippines. It helps to get the basic geographical bearings right when trying to figure out where to stay in El Nido. The two main options are to either sleep in the proper town of El Nido or to lay your head further south — but still in easy reach — of the city. The greatest number of bars, restaurants and small shops are located in El Nido city. If you are staying south of the city , you get away from the frantic pace of the narrow streets. Especially in the calm easternmost part. We can not comment directly on the beaches down by Marimegmeg and Las Cabanas, but an evening walk at Corong Corong persuaded us to sleep by the beach in El Nido instead. Search for prices and availability south of El Nido adlink. Here are four places in El Nido we think look like great accommodation deals for each of their respective price ranges. If you have a lot of money to spend , we think that spending them on a stay at Pangulasian Island Resort would be a splendid idea. The hotel is located on one of the islands surrounding El Nido and the pictures speak for themselves. The Pangulasian Island Resort seems to be the perfect base for exploring paradise. El Nido Garden Beach Resort is great if you want to stay away from most of the action, but still in comfortable reach of the amenities of the city. Search for prices and availability at The Cavern Pod here adlink. The huge limestone cliffs and white sandy beaches are too amazing to miss. In other words, a boat trip is a must if you find yourself in El Nido. We took a private boat trip with some friends where we combined two tours so we could have eight different stops with just a little less time at each. Prices are more than fair for both types of tours, though. All tours include a delicious lunch. The islands in the Bacuit Archipelago are very well-visited, so, unfortunately, you can not expect to get them all to yourself. The beach in El Nido is actually quite nice, especially if you walk away from the majority of restaurants and bars. There are hardly any sellers, and during the day most people and boats are gone — which means you can enjoy the view of the rocks and turquoise waters in peace. In the evenings , returning island-hoppers fill the restaurant tables and the tranquillity is replaced with happy hour drinks and pop music. Nacpan Beach is a wonderful stretch of sand located approximately 20 kilometres north of El Nido. The beach is long, wide and clean — and we actually recommend staying there for a few nights instead of just visiting Nacpan Beach on a day trip. Rent your own scooter and go on an adventure — or walk the main road in El Nido for two minutes and a tricycle driver will ask you if he can drive you to Nacpan. The first three-quarters of the road to Nacpan from El Nido are asphalted while the last stretch is… muddier. We can not say that we have necessarily found the best places in the city — but several of them are definitely worth checking out. We love falafel and get excited by even mediocre hummus. So when we saw that El Nido boasts a falafel stand, we were head over heels with excitement. The tortilla had the right consistency, and the burrito was accompanied by salsa. Inside, there was rice, beans and a variety of Filipino vegetables. The overall taste was good and the burrito was very filling. It was also possible to get tacos and salad bowls. Unfortunately, the cheese tasted more of Pizza Hut than of Italy, but the oven was authentically wood-fired. The restaurant is stylishly decorated in classic Greek white and blue style, and the candle lights make for a romantic atmosphere. The Tzatziki was too thin and did not seem to be made from yoghurt, and the fried cheese did not taste like anything we have ever had in Greece. We were surprised to stumble upon the very Instagram-friendly place located down the main street selling cold-pressed juices and smoothie bowls. We tried a Dragon Fruit Bowl with bananas, cashew nuts, coconut and chia seeds as well as a tropical bowl with banana, mango, coconut and chia seeds. Unfortunately, they were too watered down and not wildly satisfying taste-wise. But they were beautiful, which also counts for something, right? They also serve ice cream. There may be a bit of chaos with scooter traffic and customers with low blood sugar on the ground floor, but head upstairs for a less hectic atmosphere. On the main street of El Nido, there are several juice shops, ready to blend various tropical fruits for delicious juices and smoothies. We had a lot of mango juices, which we can certainly recommend if you visit the Philippines in mango season. The taste is nothing short of amazing. Tip: Get a cleaner fruit experience by ordering your juice with just blended fruit and ice, avoiding milk and sugar. Both Cebu and Manila are well-connected internationally. Search for the cheapest international flights to the Philippines on Momondo adlink. If the price is not a deciding factor, flying directly to El Nido is clearly the fastest and easiest solution. On the other hand, Puerto Princesa is cheaper to fly to and there are many more departures. During our time in the Philippines, we travelled with both Cebu Pacific and Philippines AirAsia and we have no complaints. El Nido is also connected to almost all other cities of Palawan and it is easy to arrange transportation from anywhere. The tourist route from south to north and back again is well-trodden, and there is more or less just a single road that makes sense for most people. Some people choose to set sails between Palawan and Coron to spend time in some of the most beautiful waters in the world — although the most popular option seemed to be to go from Palawan to Coron. Ferries also leave from Manila to Puerto Princesa offering an 18 to hour ride. We visited El Nido in November and December of and experienced days of non-stop sunshine, cloudy days and rainy days — with rain showers lasting from minutes to several hours. The weather changed almost daily. It was, however, hot and humid! The rainy season normally begins in June and lasts until November, while the dry season begins in December and lasts until May. So travelling between mid-November and May will give you the highest temperatures and the lowest amount of rainfall. Especially after the northeast monsoon have passed in February. Exploring El Nido, was one of the reccomandations we got when deciding our destinations here in the Philippines. El Nido is located at the northern tip of Palawan Island. It includes 45 islands in the Bacuit Bay. In the last years it has gained lots of attention and tourism has become one of the main sources of revenue. This is why we were a bit concerned about booking some time here. We were afraid it was going to be very busy and pricy. However we were able to find a great place away from all the touristy craziness, but still get to enjoy what the environment here has to offer. For our time here we managed to find a resort that was a bit off the grid. So we were a way from the touristy area, but still gave us a chance to explore the beautiful environment: Dolarog Beach Resort. Dolarog Beach Resort includes 4 island hopping tours in its package rate. The tours allowed us to explore the natural beauties of the Bacuit Bay. We were able to explore many beaches, islands, lagoons and snorkeling spots in the area. During these daily adventures we had a chance to admire the natural beauty of the area. We also got a chance to know better our fellow travel mates, sharing a great time together. Since we were out for so long, lunch was included in our day trips. They would start cooking on the boat in the morning. Then they would stop on a beach, set the table up with meat, fish, rice, veggies and fruit, so we could enjoy the meal and swim too! Most of the beaches had also vendors on canoes selling coconuts and drinks! Our hotel already included these tours in our stay. The boats carry between 8 to 15 people. Daily they will stop to 4 or 5 locations. There are set routes named A through D, but they can vary depending on tides and weather. For example, when we were there we had to skip our stop at El Nido town because on that day the current was getting really strong. A few days before arrival no tours went out due to the typhoon. Boats normally cost around P pesos per person depending in the route and travel agency. The trips are from 9am to 4pm and include lunch. El Nido municipality also charges P as an Environmental fee which is valid 10 days. Here are the different tours offered:. The Lagoon and Matinloc Tour are the most popular that everyone will do, specially if they have just a few days. However the other two are just as amazing and luckily not as busy! Our first tour here in El Nido was extremely adventurous! One thing we learned the hard way: you need water shoes! The bottom is full of coral in most places. In fact they stopped the boat further away from the beach due to the strong current and the lower tide, so we had to swim and walk to shore. The waves made me loose my balance plus I was wearing flip flops and I hit a big rock! I also got stuck in that same current and banged my side as well! On our first day we also realized that the crew starts cooking lunch, on the boat right away. They have a little grill right behind the captain and they start preparing the meal. Around lunchtime they stop on a beach, set a table up with meat, fish, rice, veggies and fruit, so can enjoy the meal and swim too! Our second highlight of the day was kayaking in the Big Lagoon. You can rent a kayak directly from the boat, then you follow a narrow and shallow channel that at one point brings you to a giant lagoon surrounded by limestone cliffs. Initially only Cosimo, Emma and Daddy explored decided to go. Shortly after though, Luca decided that he wanted to kayak too so we joined them around the lagoon. Our guide also took us through a tight cave but the perfect size for a kayak! It was absolutely stunning! One of my favorite stops was at Snake Island, here there is a sandbar that connects the mainland to an island at low tide. You can also hike up to the top of the island and enjoy a beautiful view of the surroundings! Our kids favorite part of the day was going into the Codognon Cave. We had to climb through a pretty tight opening. We then climbed up another bit and found a taller opening. Our kids climbed as much as they could to find hidden corners. A great adventure for them! We went on this tour on a very rough day in the bay, so we had to deal with a strong current at every stop! First stop of this tour was to the Secret Beach. Getting in was extremely complicated due to the current, so only Mass made it through luckily he made a video, so we all got to see it! All of us experienced some of this strong current later on in the day when we swam to the Hidden beach. Check out the video at the top, to see the waves! On this tour you get to do also a bit of sightseeing, in fact we stopped at Matinloc Shrine. This is a site on the western coast of Matinloc Island. Also known as the Shrine of Our Lady of Matinloc, it was built in The place looks very neglected, but it is a stop of the tour and there is an extra charge to get down. Also here you can go up to the top of a mountain peek and enjoy an amazing view! On this day we were surprised with a boat problem! It broke down just as we got back from exploring the Cadlao Lagoon and were getting ready to leave for the next stop. So we sat under the sun waiting and hoping that it would start again. Our crew has assistance from other boat crews as well through this ordeal. Cadlao Lagoon was amazing! We rented a big kayak. They were way more expensive than in the Big Lagoon pesos but we could all get on it together. It was a smaller lagoon and in one part you could just jump down and walk, however the color of water was just so beautiful! This was without any doubt the highlight of our day! We loved having a chance to explore the stunning environment here in El Nido. Unfortunately at times and with 2 tours in particular we found lots and lots of tourists. We realized that also if there are two little beaches close to each other, the boats will all go at the same one. They simply all prefer doing the same thing! Sometimes you just have to speak up! It was a very peaceful area and the sand was white. This tour brought us to the Secret Lagoon. You get through a tiny opening and find a basin of water surrounded by rock.
