Ein weiteres wichtiges Anliegen der Zünfte war die Wahrung der Gleichberechtigung ihrer Mitglieder. Um zu verhindern, dass sich einige Meister auf Kosten anderer bereichern, legte die Geschäftsordnung für alle Meister gleiche Bedingungen bei der Herstellung und dem Verkauf von Produkten fest. Jede Werkstatt legt für ihre Mitglieder die Größe der Werkstatt, die Anzahl der darin aufgestellten Vorrichtungen und Maschinen, die Anzahl der arbeitenden Auszubildenden und Auszubildenden fest. Die Werkstatturkunde legte fest, wie viel Stoff der Meister für seine Werkstatt kaufen durfte (z. B. wie viele Stoffstücke ein Schneider kaufen durfte). Die Zunft verband die Bürger nicht nur in der Arbeit, sondern auch in anderen Lebensbereichen. Er beteiligte sich am Schutz der Stadt und stellte seine Abteilung in die Stadtmiliz. Jede Werkstatt hatte ihren eigenen Schutzpatron und oft auch eine eigene Kirche oder Kapelle. Die Werkstatt leistete gegenseitige Hilfe, half den notleidenden Handwerkern und ihren Familien bei Krankheit oder Tod des Ernährers.
Jede Handwerksgewerkschaft hatte ihr eigenes Wappen und ihre Fahne, baute ihr eigenes besonderes Gebäude, in dem die Vorarbeiter saßen und sich von Zeit zu Zeit einfache Mitglieder der Werkstatt zur Beratung oder zum Fest versammelten. Viele Werkstätten hatten ihre eigenen Orchester und Tänze. An wichtigen Feiertagen wurde die Arbeit eingestellt, und zur festgesetzten Stunde begann eine feierliche Prozession. Jedes Geschäft ging in einer speziellen Spalte unter flatternden Bannern mit den Emblemen des Handwerks. Von Handwerkern komponierte Lieder ergossen sich über die ganze Straße. Lieder wurden durch Massentänze ersetzt. Berühmt waren die Nürnberger Messerschmiede vor allem für ihren Tanz. Sie befanden sich in einem weiten Kreis und warfen in rhythmischer Bewegung Messer in die Höhe, die sie dann geschickt im Flug aufhoben. Im Spaß wurden die Sorgen intensiver Arbeitstage vergessen.
Bis zum XIV-XV Jahrhundert. Werkstätten erreichten ihren Höhepunkt. Zuvor hatten die Zunftmeister einen harten Kampf um den Zugang zur Stadtverwaltung zu bestehen. Nach der Befreiung der Städte von der Unterordnung unter die Feudalherren übernahmen die Patriziate (Vertreter der edelsten und wohlhabendsten städtischen Familien) die Macht in ihnen und ignorierten die Interessen der einfachen Bürger. Die inzwischen viel stärker gewordenen Werkstätten erhoben bewaffnete Aufstände gegen die städtische Elite. Der Kampf ging mit wechselndem Erfolg weiter. In einigen Städten, in denen die handwerkliche Produktion stark entwickelt war, haben die Zünfte gewonnen (Köln, Basel, Florenz usw.). In anderen, wo Großhandel und Kaufleute die führende Rolle spielten, ging das Stadtpatriziat (Hamburg, Lübeck, Rostock und andere Städte der Hanse) als Sieger aus dem Kampf hervor. Es gibt Fälle, in denen diese Konfrontation, die manchmal als "Geschäftsrevolution" bezeichnet wird, in gütlichen Vereinbarungen zwischen der städtischen Elite und den einflussreichsten Geschäften endete. Und solche Werkstätten, die sich durch Stärke und Reichtum auszeichneten („Senior“, „Groß“), fielen in allen großen Städten auf. Daneben gab es auch Ärmere („jünger“, „klein“).
