Das frühe Mittelalter wird manchmal auch als „dunkles Zeitalter“ bezeichnet. Der Übergang von der Antike zum Mittelalter war in Westeuropa von einem tiefen Kulturverfall begleitet.
Nicht nur die barbarischen Invasionen, die das Weströmische Reich beendeten, führten zur Zerstörung der kulturellen Werte der Antike. Nicht weniger zerstörerisch als die Schläge der Westgoten, Vandalen und Langobarden war die feindselige Haltung der Kirche gegenüber dem antiken Kulturerbe. Papst Gregor I. führte einen offenen Krieg gegen die antike Kultur (siehe Artikel „Papsttum“): Er verbot das Lesen von Büchern antiker Autoren und das Studium der Mathematik, wobei er Letzteren Verbindungen zur Magie vorwarf. Der wichtigste Bereich der Kultur, die Bildung, mache besonders schwierige Zeiten durch. Gregor I. hat einmal verkündet: „Ignoranz ist die Mutter wahrer Frömmigkeit.“ Im 5. bis 10. Jahrhundert herrschte in Westeuropa wirklich Ignoranz. Es war fast unmöglich, gebildete Leute nicht nur unter den Bauern, sondern auch unter dem Adel zu finden. Viele Ritter setzen statt einer Unterschrift ein Kreuz. Bis zu seinem Lebensende konnte er nicht lernen, den Gründer des fränkischen Staates, den berühmten Karl den Großen, zu schreiben (vgl. Art. „Karl I. der Große“). Aber dem Kaiser war Wissen offensichtlich nicht gleichgültig. Bereits im Erwachsenenalter griff er auf die Dienste von Lehrern zurück. Kurz vor seinem Tod mit dem Studium der Schreibkunst begonnen, bewahrte Karl sorgsam Wachstafeln und Pergamentblätter unter seinem Kopfkissen auf und lernte in seiner Freizeit Buchstaben zu zeichnen. Darüber hinaus förderte der Landesherr die Wissenschaftler. Sein Hof in Aachen wurde zum Bildungszentrum. In einer eigens geschaffenen Schule lehrte der berühmte Wissenschaftler und Schriftsteller Alcuin, ein gebürtiger Brite, den Söhnen von Charles selbst und den Kindern seines Gefolges die Grundlagen der Wissenschaft. Aus dem ganzen analphabetischen Europa kamen einige Gebildete nach Aachen. Nach dem Vorbild der Antike wurde die Gesellschaft der Gelehrten, die sich am Hofe Karls des Großen versammelten, Akademie genannt. In seinen letzten Lebensjahren wurde Alcuin Abt des reichsten Klosters St. Martin in der Stadt Tours, wo er auch eine Schule gründete, deren Schüler später zu berühmten Lehrern an Kloster- und Kirchenschulen in Frankreich wurden.

Der kulturelle Aufschwung während der Regierungszeit Karls des Großen und seiner Nachfolger (Karolinger) wurde als „karolingische Renaissance“ bezeichnet. Aber er war von kurzer Dauer. Bald konzentrierte sich das kulturelle Leben wieder in den Klöstern.
Kloster- und Kirchenschulen waren die ersten Bildungseinrichtungen des Mittelalters. Und obwohl die christliche Kirche nur punktuelle Überbleibsel der benötigten antiken Bildung (vor allem Latein) bewahrte, setzte sich in ihnen die kulturelle Tradition fort und verband verschiedene Epochen.
Die niederkirchlichen Schulen bildeten hauptsächlich Pfarrer aus. Der bezahlte Unterricht wurde in Latein durchgeführt. Die Schule wurde von Kindern von Feudalherren, wohlhabenden Bürgern, wohlhabenden Bauern besucht. Das Studium begann mit dem Pauken von Gebeten und Psalmen (religiöse Gesänge). Dann wurden die Schüler in das lateinische Alphabet eingeführt und lernten, dieselben Gebete aus dem Buch zu lesen. Oft war dieses Buch das einzige in der Schule (Manuskriptbücher waren sehr teuer, und es war noch weit von der Erfindung des Buchdrucks entfernt). Beim Lesen merkten sich Jungen (Mädchen wurden nicht zur Schule gebracht) die häufigsten Wörter und Ausdrücke, ohne sich mit ihrer Bedeutung zu befassen. Kein Wunder, dass nicht jeder, der fernab der Umgangssprache lateinische Texte lesen lernte, das Gelesene auch verstehen konnte. Aber all diese Weisheit wurde mit Hilfe eines Stabes in die Gedanken der Jünger gehämmert.
Es dauerte ungefähr drei Jahre, um das Schreiben zu lernen. Die Schüler übten zuerst auf einer gewachsten Tafel und lernten dann, mit einer Gänsefeder auf Pergament (speziell behandeltes Leder) zu schreiben. Neben Lesen und Schreiben lernten sie, Zahlen mit den Fingern darzustellen, lernten das Einmaleins auswendig, trainierten Kirchengesang und lernten natürlich die Grundlagen der katholischen Lehre kennen. Trotzdem waren viele Schüler der Schule für immer von einer Abneigung gegen das Pauken, gegen das ihnen fremde Latein, durchdrungen und verließen die Schulwände halbgebildet, in der Lage, irgendwie die Texte liturgischer Bücher zu lesen.
Größere Schulen, die eine ernsthaftere Ausbildung boten, entstanden normalerweise an Bischofssitzen. In ihnen studierten sie nach erhaltener römischer Tradition die sogenannten „sieben freien Künste“ (Grammatik, Rhetorik, Dialektik, Arithmetik, Geometrie, Astronomie und Musik). Das System der freien Künste umfasste zwei Ebenen. Die erste bestand aus Grammatik, Rhetorik, Dialektik. Höher bildeten sich alle übrigen freien Künste. Der schwierigste Teil war die Grammatik. Damals wurde sie oft als Königin mit einem Messer zum Ausradieren von Fehlern in der rechten und einer Peitsche in der linken Hand dargestellt. Kinder lernten Definitionen auswendig, übten Konjugation und Deklination. Buchstaben wurden merkwürdig interpretiert: Vokale sind Seelen und Konsonanten sind wie Körper; der Körper ist ohne die Seele bewegungslos, und Konsonanten ohne Vokale haben keine Bedeutung. In der Rhetorik (Redekunst) wurden die Regeln der Syntax, der Stilistik weitergegeben, sie übten sich in der Erstellung schriftlicher und mündlicher Predigten, Briefe, Briefe, Geschäftspapiere. Dialektik (wie die Denkkunst damals genannt wurde, später Logik genannt) lehrte nicht nur, zu argumentieren und Schlüsse zu ziehen, sondern auch, in der Rede der Feinde Positionen zu finden, die den Lehren der Kirche widersprachen, und sie zu widerlegen. Der Rechenunterricht führte Addition und Subtraktion ein, in geringerem Maße auch Multiplikation und Division (das Schreiben von Zahlen in römischen Ziffern machte sie sehr schwierig). Schulkinder lösten Rechenaufgaben und berechneten die Zeit religiöser Feiertage und das Alter der Heiligen. Sie sahen in den Zahlen eine religiöse Bedeutung. Es wurde angenommen, dass die Zahl "3" die Heilige Dreifaltigkeit symbolisiert und "7" - die Erschaffung der Welt durch Gott in sieben Tagen. Auf die Arithmetik folgte die Geometrie. Sie gab nur Antworten auf allgemeine Fragen (was ist ein Quadrat? etc.) ohne Beweise. Auch geographische Informationen wurden im Geometriekurs vermittelt, oft phantastisch und absurd (Die Erde ist ein im Wasser schwimmender Pfannkuchen, Jerusalem ist der Nabel der Erde ... etc.). Dann studierten sie Astronomie. Sie lernten die Sternbilder kennen, beobachteten die Bewegung der Planeten, der Sonne, des Mondes, der Sterne, aber sie erklärten es falsch. Es wurde angenommen, dass die Leuchten auf verschiedenen komplexen Bahnen um die Erde kreisen. Die Astronomie sollte helfen, den Beginn der kirchlichen Feiertage zu berechnen. Im Musikstudium sangen die Studenten im Kirchenchor. Die Ausbildung erstreckte sich oft über 12-13 Jahre.
