Egypt Steps In With Power Boost as Libya's Grid Collapses
Cairo has restored electricity exports with an initial 70 MW capacity after a major grid collapse left most of Libya without power, a Libyan official told Saudi media.
Key details:
🟠 Debt payment facilitates resumption: Libya reportedly paid $100 million of its $141 million arrears, with the remaining $41 million to be settled by the end of 2026.
🟠 Emergency use: The interconnection helped Libya restart its grid after it lost about 1,350 MW of generation capacity due to faults at multiple plants and transmission lines.
🟠 Regional energy hub: Egypt is positioning itself as a regional energy hub, with existing links to Sudan and Jordan, and planned connections to Saudi Arabia, Greece, and Cyprus.
