We’re having a small get together tonight with friends to do a double feature. Our group of friends has seen dozens of horror movies
Eden Lake has been on my list for a while but I also see that it is violent. My question is, how disturbing is it and what type of violence is involved (is there rape)? How would a room with different tolerances respond? How does it compare to something like The Hills Have Eyes?
If it helps -Some of our favorites have been The Witch, It Follows, Goodnight Mommy, The Taking of Deborah Logan. Some others that were less well received were We Need to Talk About Kevin and The Eyes of My Mother

Agreed. I wasn't "scared" per say, but afterwards I just felt hollow and depressed. After it ended my girlfriend and I had to put on something more uplifting because we were sufficiently bummed out.
Once the movie was was over I found myself depressed with no hope in humanity.
I think it depends on what an individual watcher is already acquainted with. I personally didn't find it especially disturbing (though I understand why others may have) because I'm intimately familiar with child abuse and antisocial personality disorder. The bleakness with which these topics are portrayed in the movie are pretty...well, I don't wanna say "true-to-life" since every situation is different, but it's definitely believable, and could happen.
It's a pretty stark/bleak film, so for a group, I might choose something a little lighter. But hey, if you think your circle of friends would be able to hand it / enjoy it, then go for it.
Hmm. Given your list of favorites, I'd say go for it. It's definitely harrowing and draining, though - more "oh fuck" than "fuck yeah," if that makes sense. So it's not your typical party movie, but it is pretty damn good.
The violence is very realistic and disturbing. Much more heavy than The Hills Have Eyes (if you're talking about the remake).
I found it a kinda boring, by the numbers take on this sub genre (admittedly not my favorite). For group viewing, I tend to go with lighter, more universal stuff like Trick r Treat or Housebound. Other options that I've seen diverse groups enjoy:

I thought it was OK, even if a little over rated. I don't really see it as a horror movie, honestly. It was also a little slow, but it could be that my expectations were a little high due to the acclaim it received on this sub. I would choose something else for a movie to watch with a group. I did enjoy it, but it isnt something I would want to watch with a group of people for a fun evening of horror.
I completely agree, it was going great until the point main female lead was just watching her husband getting killed and not doing anything....
While it is a movie that involves violence, it does not feel over the top. There really are no "violence of the sake of violence" scenes. IMO it is a full two steps back from The Eyes of My Mother in the level of uncomfortableness you feel from grotesque things on screen.

Eden Lake is like Deliverance but with malevolent children instead of hillbillies.
I found The Hills Have Eyes (I assume you mean the 2006 version) to be significantly more disturbing than Eden Lake. That being said...
I wouldn't call it a great movie to watch with a group. In fact I'd say it's a uniquely BAD movie for the situation you've described.
It's an extremely unpleasant tour of a miserable subject matter, not a fun gorey romp. And worst of all it's forgettable.
It was disturbing but given the way people talk about it, I was expecting something really crazy. It wasn't much worse than other movies about couples being stalked through the woods. There were some very graphic scenes and the nonchalantness of the killings was disturbing. There wasn't a rape scene.
Only a few bloody violent scenes but i would really recommend this movie over your movies on your list it is a lot more thriller than horror
First off how does anybody enjoy “goodnight mommy” Jesus that movie was bullshit.
Eden lake is a good one. If you can handle the hills have eyes then this is really a walk in the park. The only thing that got me uncomfortable is that it deals with kids and one kid in general gets the business.
Haha yeah I thought Goodnight Mommy was wonderfully shot with lots of really great themes but to each his own

The violence in The Hills Have Eyes (the remake) is cartooney. It's done in an almost fetishistic manner. The violence in Eden Lake is much more realistic and gruesome, there's no catharsis to it.
