Ecuadorian sex workers assert rights through pioneering union

Transgender individuals and biological men in the sex workers' industry have joined with female prostitutes in Ecuador's capital to form a union that is a pioneer in the South American region.

The "Union of Sex Workers of Quito" brings together biological women and men and nearly 50 transgender persons who ply their trade at streets and parks in Ecuador's capital, with a primary goal of ending the invisibilization that the latter two groups are subjected to by society.

According to the union, that lack of visibility makes them more vulnerable to violence.

The union's coordinator, David Gonzalez, says other actors whose existence largely has been ignored by a "hypocritical" society need to be included under the umbrella of sex work.

People twist reality and that can lead to the criminalization of sexual work or its elimination by decree under the precept that all work of this type is tantamount to people trafficking.

The society also has a welfare-oriented conception of sex work marked by a belief in the supposed need to rescue "the poor female sex worker who has nothing to eat and therefore dedicates herself to this," he told EFE.

In the case of transgender people, Article 11 of Ecuador's Constitution protects them from discrimination on the basis of their gender identity, while the practice of sex work in the country is not illegal.

Nevertheless, women, men and transgender individuals in the sex trade not only are united by the work they do - often a result of a lack of other opportunities - but also by the segregation and marginalization they suffer in their daily lives.

"Fabian," a pseudonym used to protect his identity, and Monica Reyes (a trans woman) are two sex workers and members of the union who said that economic necessity led them to work in that business.

Reyes, who has worked in the sex trade for half of her life, told EFE that she became a prostitute at age 22 because "this society isn't open yet" and a place in the work world is closed to her due to male chauvinism.

She said her family is aware of the work she does every night in a district of northern Quito and has accepted her as she is, even though they would prefer she find work in her chosen course of study: cosmetics.

Fabian, however, said he left his family behind in crisis-racked Venezuela three years ago and that they do not know how he earns a living while abroad

"My family doesn't know because in Venezuela I had a different lifestyle. I was a professional there (a materials engineer). I had my own life and a daughter who is about to turn 10," he told EFE at Quito's Parque El Ejido, where he typically works.

Both acknowledged they are afraid to go out of the street every day, saying they are victims of aggression not only from ordinary people but also the security forces.

They also lamented that a massive influx of Colombian and Venezuelan immigrants in Ecuador has driven down prices in the sex trade, with rates for a so-called "quickie" having fallen from $20 to $10 and the cost of a "full service" job having dropped from $30 to $20.

The union's ultimate goal is to change the mentality of a society they say is male chauvinist and homophobic.

"This is a feminist struggle in which we're seeking equality. It's about teaching people that women, men and people across the gender spectrum exist in society, and access to one's rights (should not depend) on one's (sexual) orientation, identity, occupation or health status," Ana Almeida, of the Association of Female Trans Sex Workers of Quito, said.

Room tip: Tips in our key packet included about seven different warnings about not going out in the area. Not wearing jewelry, not using iphones or cameras. I wanted to go to a pharmacy but was told the nearest one was 7 blocks away. Oh, you're told not to take a taxi either. Did the business center/gift shop have something as simple as cough drops? NO.

I spend several weeks in the Hilton Colon for business. The facilities are great. There is a nice gym, great pool, and a number of restaurants. The massages in the spa are heavenly, as is the Jacuzzi. The service is very attentive and the facilities are super clean. However, there were several things that bothered me. Breakfast is not included and costs $26! The location is terrible and there is nothing within walking distance. Most disagreeable however, is that there seem to be a number of prostitutes in the bar almost every night of the week. These women are hanging out with older businessmen and they pull up by the taxi load in the evenings. It wasn't really obvious to me at first, abut after spending more than a week here it was very clear. it is very disturbing in such a classy and pricy hotel. More
Dear Mrs…. your comments are much appreciated as they help us to continue improving our service. We are glad you enjoyed our facilities. Best regards,
Had two nights at each end of a Galapagos trip in this hotel Cannot fault this hotel- great food , good room, super wifi, good gym and the pool is great. Concierge will sort out your trips outside the hotel- Guayaquil is a scary city. ;-) Nice place to unwind after your trip to paradise
Dear Peter, we are so glad you enjoyed our country and your stay at our hotel. Hope you come back soon. Regards,
We stated here on our way to and from the Galapagos. What a great oasis in the middle of an otherwise unimpressive city. The pool is great for adults and kids alike and the pool bar is a great place to get a drink and relax. We were not impressed that out of 5 advertised restaurants only 1 was open and the food and service were mediocre but the rooms are wonderful and comfortable so we were overall very happy.
Dear Anyacappolla We are glad you had a nice stay. Your comments surely help us to improve our service. Hope you come back in the near future. Best regards,
Upon entering the hotel and seeing the plain but reasonably attractive lobby, we mistakenly thought that this hotel would be on par with other Hiltons. The pool was nice, but the towels were a five minute walk from the area. Don't even think about ordering from the poolside cafe unless you have all afternoon to wait. The upscale Verenda Tropical offered average food served by waiters who could not communicate in English even though the clientele is primarily Americans and Aussies. The serve was slow, rude, and sloppy. You would get better service at a fast food joint. The rooms were clean and a nice size but had that stale odor. Don't call housekeeping for anything unless you feel like waiting around. I can't imagine why so many upscale tour companies use this hotel. It's hard to believe that this is one of the better establishments in Guayaquil.
Dear Ellen, we are very sorry about the inconveniences you went through during your stay. Your comments are much appreciated as they help us to improve our service. Best regards,
This hotel was part of a packaged itinerary that included the Galapagos and the Swisshotel in Quito. It was a disappointing way to end the fabulous trip. Despite the Hilton "Make it Right" guarantee ("If you're not satisfied with your stay, let us know and we'll make it right.") they did not make it right. For business travel (which I used to do a TON) this would be a disaster, shower did not work in first room. After first repair, second problem caused us to ask for new room. Second room had no working phone. What if I had a business dinner or meeting to attend?! Our Tauck tour guide helped us to get a response (sense of urgency to fix things was sorely lacking) and I'm fairly certain had we been on our own, we might still be waiting for resolution. I don't know what the options are, but if there are other business hotels that actually get it right, I would recommend them over this Hilton.
Dear LDGourmet, We are very sorry for the inconveniences during your stay. We apologize and hope we get the chance to serve in the next future, you as you deserve. Best regards,
We stayed here 2 nights, one either side of a trip to the Galapagos with Lindblad-National Geographic. Less than 10 min from the airport. The check in was incredibly efficient. Our room was set up perfectly when we arrived with a cot for our daughter. The rooms were large and clean. The wifi was free and fast. The pool and gym were fantastic – large and clean. The staff was polite and helpful with the exception of the food/bar service at the pool. I had to beg to get food by the pool and waited an hour for a burger. The elevators were not adequate for the traffic as there was a large party when we were there. The party guests were very rude, but I cannot blame Hilton for that.
Dear FayeJ42, We feel pleased to know you enjoyed our service and property. Also, we apologize for the inconveniences . Please feel sure that your feedback is really important for us to take the corrective actions needed. Hope we can host you in another opportunity. Best regards,
