He has been suspected of the attempted assassination of a political leader. But long before Europe became the staging post for the Ulic global crime syndicate, the Golden Mile of Sydney's Kings Cross was his stomping ground and Bill Bayeh — the strip's main man — was an underbelly associate. Quaid, who was a guest at the Ulic wedding, stood to make a fortune from the Fremantle shipment until State and Federal police spoilt the party with an operation codenamed Interstice. Before being jailed in March this year for up to 17 years for his role in the MDMA conspiracy, Quaid and another wedding guest from Perth — high-profile bikie Troy Mercanti — were among the targets of a police investigation dubbed Taskforce Schumacher. Its focus became kg of ecstasy tablets intercepted by Customs officers in Sydney. The supply source was Ulic, who departed Australia in mid to arrange the shipment from Europe, and never returned. The drugs arrived in sealed coffee bags and were hidden in a consignment of antique furniture from Belgium. But when Customs officers pounced in Sydney, the Perth ecstasy importers got wind of the intercept and abandoned their shipment. Members of the Kizon and Ulic groups escaped the law on that occasion, but missed out on one of their biggest paydays ever. Quaid, according to police sources, went from eating five-star restaurant meals to Junior Whoppers at Hungry Jacks. Ulic has been chased by law enforcement organisations for more than two decades, but was rarely caught. In , he was a suspect in the gangland shooting murder of a Kings Cross nightclub bouncer. It was only after a corrupt detective confessed that money had changed hands to thwart the original murder inquiry that a new investigation began. It resulted in Ulic being extradited from Germany, but the charges were dropped. Seven years later, Ulic's name surfaced as part of an international investigation into the attempted political assassination of Serbian opposition leader Vuk Draskovic. In June , the politician was sitting watching television at his seaside home in Budva, Montenegro, when two shots were fired through the lounge window, clipping his ear and the left side of his head. Gunmen had tried to kill Draskovic a year earlier in a roadside shooting which left four of his colleagues dead. Ulic was a suspect in the second attempt. Since , Ulic has been living in Montenegro's capital, Podgorica, out of reach of Australian police because the two countries have no extradition treaty. Gone is the Manly-based property development company he directed based in Manly, Sydney. That man, who cannot be named because he is yet to face trial, is thought to have been close to members of the Kizon Network. Meanwhile, the Federal warrants in relation to Ulic's drug trafficking sit waiting for his unlikely return. It is a mystery how Mercanti and Quaid first connected with Ulic. But the relationships go back at least nine years to , when Quaid and Mercanti flew to Montenegro for the wedding. Quaid had also helped Ulic launder drug money through Malaysia before it was used to buy Queensland property. Born in India of Iranian origin, Quaid moved to Australia with his family in , where he was brought up in Leeming and became a boyhood friend of footballer Ben Cousins. His father is a mechanical engineer, but apart from honing his martial arts skills and collecting debts for a bikie gang, Quaid was never one to pursue a career working with his hands. By , he was on the radar of WA Police when 60g of amphetamines were found hidden in one of his socks. He beat the charge, but the run-in with the law probably cost him a place in Australia's taekwondo team for the Sydney Olympics. Later that year he was convicted after a separate speed bust. Since , Quaid has worked as a personal trainer and a disputes mediator specialising in defusing arguments between bikies and businesses. He dabbled in the importation of perfume and clothing and once organised finance for a friend to start an escort agency. If there was a dollar in it, Fab, as he's known, would do it. At the time of his arrest for the drugs conspiracy on May 21, , he was negotiating to buy a Manly coffee shop cafe through his family trust. The trendy Four Olives Deli would even be used as part of Quaid's defence to explain the use of the word 'menus' in intercepted telephone calls between himself and Ulic. In the end, the jury believed menus meant drugs, just as they decided 'wedding' was code for shipment. Detectives say when Quaid was arrested in Sydney after the MDMA powder and a pill-press machine were seized at a house in Perth's eastern suburb of Lockridge, he broke down in tears. He knew the monotonous regime of Casuarina maximum-security prison would replace his party lifestyle. He said he had not been told why the SHU was his home, other than a suggestion from an 'external intelligence agency' that he was an escape risk.
