Serbia and Montenegro have about 10,, inhabitants and are situated in Southeastern Europe. Being located on one of the major drug routes connecting the Near East and Central and Western Europe, as well as being exposed to severe economic and political crisis during the past two decades, has created serious problems for the country regarding drug availability and use. Tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use among youth represents a serious problem. Especially vulnerable are the high school and college populations. Unfortunately, there are no national epidemiologic studies on this topic, and the real dimensions of the problem are unknown. The purpose of this work was to provide a clearer picture of the substance abuse among the youth in Serbia. One out of every five students was drunk more than ten times in their lifetime. Thirty percent have tried marijuana, of which half have continued to use it. Taking into account that the periods of adolescence and youth are the times that provide an opportunity for communication and learning, we have an imperative obligation to help this population acquire and adopt knowledge and skills for healthy lifestyles, and to resist psychoactive substances.
