I have noticed on a lot of dark brownskinned - very darkskinned women who appear to be over 30 that their facial cheeks have turned black, they almost appear brusied. Why is that, what is the root cause & what is the solution?

Some women get something called 'melasma' during pregnancy which is a darkening of the facial skin due to hormones. It goes away for many who get it but not for all.

Not just darkskinned, or blacks if you are obese it's because of your insulin levels.

I've only noticed that on overweight men and women light to dark skinned. It looks like they've contoured their cheeks, it's not necessarily dark on the apples. If this is what you're talking about you can try Walgreens Alpha Hydroxy Facial Cream or any 10% AHA lotion. The AHA will gently exfoliate the skin which in turm may help lighten the hyperpigmentation. Maybe someone can give a more natural alternative.

No, it's on light skinned people too. I noticed it only on fat people.

That is a sign of diabetes. I found that out watching, 'The Weight of the Nation', it's a four part documentary that's on HBO. It's an excellent doc, I recommend that everyone watch it, no matter your size. It covers obesity from all angles: industry, children, adults, medical industry. I learned so much.

But anyway, the parents were concerned about their daughter's weight, took her to the doctor and she pulled the girl's collar down and there was a dark ring forming. The doc said that was a sign that the insulin is going 'out of whack' (for lack of a better term. Can't think of the official name for it) in the body.

That documentary opened my eyes, I tell you.

I have a little on my cheeks because that's where I get, like, 98% of my acne and I'm a picker. I don't leave the house without make-up because of it.

Im going to be a cosmetic dermatologist because of this. I want to help black folks with OUR skin issues. Certian lasers and treatments derms normally use to treat skin conditions are too harsh on our skin. and Alot of these problems with hyper-pigmentation white people cant even spot because it looks different on their skin. Im still in undergrad have bombed a few classes but I am SO DETERMINED. I wont stop

its called Melasma, and anything/everything could cause it. From pregnancy, birth control pills, thyroid problems, sun exposure, hormonal imbalances. There are also a wide variety of treatments. bleaching creams, AHA, henna, tea tree oil mixed w/jojoba oil, laser therapy etc.

Oh, now that I'm thinking about all this let me tell you the flip side. I am lightskinned but not what they call "hi yella", & on my back I've got these white spots. My mom said I wasn't born with them, but they appeared when I was around 10 yrs old, she took me to the dr & who sent me to see a specialist & they put me through all kinds of test, even in some type of tube that I had to stand up in naked from the waist up & the results were.......they had no results. When I became a adult I noticed other lightskinned people who had this issue, some had white spots on their faces so I guess I'm fortunate that mine showed up on my back. Those dr's did say the only conclusion they had was that this was just a area where the pigmentation of my skin just didn't come in. I've still got them to this day, they don't bother me & I don't bother them.

What with the scourge of diabetes and the havoc it continues to wreak on our community, I STRONGLY URGE anyone with this problem to visit a DOCTOR before visiting a cosmetics counter.

My BIL's son died @ age 22. By the time he died, he had lost a leg, an arm, was blind and living in a rest home.

My sister's a nurse and worked at a dialysis facility for 10+ years....she knows people who've gone blind by the time they were in their 30s. From complete neglect of their diabetes.

Diabetes is not an automatic death sentence but shit is serious out here.

I knew what she was talking about. I know it's usually a diabetes thing. I was just adding another possible cause of it.

FOR THE DARK SPOTS ON THE CHEEKS (melasma)
Make sure if you are using a bleaching cream that it contains hydroquinone (no higher than 2%) and always use thin layers. Day and night until it goes away.

1. Wash your face with a cleanser that contains alpha hydroxy/and or beta hydroxy acids. look at the ingredients of the cleanser in the back.

(Alpha hydroxy acids: malic acid, citric acid, lactic acid, tartaric acid glycolic acid, mandelic acid. must contain at least 2 of these AHAs. )

(Beta hydroxy acid: there is only one beta hydroxy acid, Salicylic acid, no higher than 2%. BEWARE never use Salicylic acid without an alpha hydroxy acid! Wash your face with the cleanser in an upwards circular motion SLOWLY for at least two minutes

2. Use a ALCOHOL FREE toner after you are done cleansing, with cotton balls/pads. (Neutrogena line has one)

3. A bleaching cream with hydroquinone is best to use on dark spots. Use thin layers rub on until it disappears.

BUT! if you don't like the idea of bleaching and the fact that hydroquinone makes your skin sensitive to the sun you can use a more organic approach!

3. 3 drops of organic tea tree oil mixed with 6 drops of organic jojoba oil. (use VERY VERY little of the oil you mixed together on the spots)

4. After you are done use 100% vitamin e oil. Make sure you take very little vitamin e oil and try to spread it all over your face (esp on those spots). V itamin e oil is really thick so this may be tedious.

Do this routine every day as soon as you wake up and night right before you sleep for at least two months. It should work by then if it doesn't for you then try something else and make sure you get PLENTY OF SLEEP!!!

*you can find all of these products at local walgreens and cvs pharmacy's. Tea tree oil, jojoba oil, and vitamin e oil can be found only and stores like GNC, or you can order it online.

WARNINGS : AHA, BHA and hydroquinone makes your skin more sensitive towards the sun! Vitamin e oil can act as an OK sunscreen, but please beware of too much sun when you are using products with these ingredients!

If your spots look like the ones on the girls face
Then I think its called idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis, its a form of hypopigmentation (also called leukoderma). Despite its long nasty name the condition is pretty common and its treatable. The common cause for it sun exposure.
It mostly occurs on the arms and legs but i doubt that the face is immune.

some people use Retinoids but if your skin is sensitive then you can experience pealing and burning with it.
search up idiopathic guttate hypomelanosis, and most importantly schedule a visit to the dermatologists because they can help you with it, more than I can.
