First, “GSI policies” are the insurance company’s best and most robust disability policy. The company waives all medical questions and then deeply discounts the premium and only charges unisex rates .
What’s the catch? There’s only one: the 12/12 exclusion. If you make a claim during the first twelve months of owning the policy, benefits will pay unless you’ve seen a physician (or should have) for that same condition during the twelve months prior to purchasing the policy. After you’ve owned the policy 13 months, there are no limitations for pre-existing conditions.
Frankly, most residents are young, healthy and smart. This makes them generally good risks for the insurance company. They want more doctors to insure and will provide discounts to get large groups such as UAB residents.
