Good binding on book. Colorful illustrations!
This is great way for a kid to learn their emotions and how to handle things they just don’t understand.
Bought this for my 3 year old who is prone to anger outbursts and meltdowns. Terrible book for him. The child in this book has an anger tantrum bc he drops a cookie jar he is reaching for himself while standing on a chair. His mom tells him “no” bc he’s angry but the book ends with her opening the book and giving him the cookie. Absolutely not what I want my child see to learn. We ask for cookies. We tolerate hearing “no.” Tantrums do not earn two cookies. Yes I still love you & will cosoothe when melting down.

I bought this book for my son when he was 2 years old. It is his favorite book- mine too! It’s so much fun to read and teaches critical skills about managing emotions. I disagree with everyone else saying the book rewards bad behavior. First, the mom never said he couldn’t have a cookie. The child is just a small toddler and tries to get a cookie himself- not knowing the dangers of climbing things. He/she is just trying to be independent but it doesn’t go as planned and he falls and bumps his head. That is ultimately why he had a fit- because he hurt himself and he couldn’t get the lid off of the cookie jar. The mom comforts him by teaching him how to handle his anger and frustration by counting and breathing, then, once calm, he and mom enjoy a couple cookies together. This book has helped me teach my son how to calm down when he is having a bad day by reciting a couple pages from the book. He is now very good at managing his anger. We have very few fits and I honestly believe a huge part of that is due to this book.
A few reviewers claim this book rewards bad behavior, but I disagree. Yes, the child goes for a biscuit when he probably didn't ask. Yes, there were consequences, and yes, he became enraged. But it’s not like the mom said “oh little one, take this biscuit to feel better”. Instead she explains to him how reacting with anger won’t help the situation (a lesson many adults need to learn). It then brings in counting which is also great. This is my daughter’s favorite book. She loves the illustrations and is very interested in all the little boy’s facial expressions. She counts with me by pointing to each number as the little boy begins to count. At the end when the little boy reaches 10, she smiles and claps and is happy he feels better. The other day when my daughter was upset about me telling her no, I was able to hug her and repeat lines from this book. We counted to 10 and after I was finished, she went and grabbed the book for me to read. Sometimes children need stronger discipline, but most times, they need an adult to be a role model of patience, seeing someone calm and in control of their behavior. This book is great at using art that is appealing to children to help them understand why the little boy was angry but that there is a better way to get what you want besides throwing a fit. And no, after I read the book to my daughter after I had told her no to her begging, I did not give her what she wanted. That’s not always how it works or what this book suggests you to do 😂

One of my toddler’s favorite books! This book taught her to take a deep breath when feeling out of control of her feelings.
Our kids love this book so much that we gifted it to all our best friends in a holiday book exchange! My two year old and 5 year old both count to ten and take a deep breath just like in the book. :)

Helps little ones recognise anger
I read it with my 3 year old when she's calmed down from her rage to help her understand what just happened. I haven't yet been able to get her to recognise she's getting angry though or prevent a full blown meltdown, but it's getting better by the day. Recommend it for the terrible 3s, which I was totally unaware of until they happened.

Polly Dunbar graduated from Brighton Art School in 1999 where she studied illustration. Polly still lives and works in Brighton. Author and illustrator of Penguin, Dog Blue and Flyaway Katie. Polly is the daughter of the distinguished author Joyce Dunbar who she collaborated with on the picture book Shoe Baby. She is the illustrator of My Dad's a Birdman and The boy who climbed into the Moon, both written by David Almond. Polly also illustrated Here's a Little Poem, an anthology of poems for very young children. Her best selling book Penguin won the Nestle Silver award 2007, The Book trust early Years award 2007, The Red house award 2008 and was shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal. Polly is the author and illustrator of Tilly and Friends, a humorous and colourful series of six books following the escapades of a little girl and her animal friends who all live together in a little yellow house.
Polly is the co-founder of Long Nose puppets, an award winning puppet company, they have made successful adaptations of the books Shoe Baby, Fly Away Katie and Penguin. Long Nose Puppets are currently touring the UK.
