The sophisticated scheme, which has been operating for over a year, allegedly siphoned millions of dollars from unsuspecting drivers by exploiting vulnerabilities in the electronic toll collection system.

How the Scam Worked

According to investigators, the scam involved a network of fraudsters who created counterfeit E-ZPass transponders and sold them online at discounted rates. These fake devices were programmed to mimic legitimate E-ZPass accounts, allowing users to pass through tolls without being charged. However, the toll fees were instead billed to legitimate E-ZPass account holders, many of whom were unaware of the fraudulent activity until they received unexpected charges on their statements.

So far, six individuals have been arrested in connection with the scam, including the alleged ringleader, 34-year-old Carlos Mendez of Newark. Mendez, who has a prior criminal record for identity theft, is facing charges of fraud, conspiracy, and theft. The other suspects are believed to have played key roles in manufacturing, distributing, and selling the counterfeit devices.

Impact on Commuters

The scam has left thousands of commuters frustrated and out of pocket. Many victims have reported spending hours on the phone with E-ZPass customer service to dispute unauthorized charges. Toll authorities are urging anyone who suspects they may have been affected to report the issue immediately.

'We are working closely with law enforcement to identify all victims and ensure they are reimbursed,' said Lisa Franklin, a spokesperson for the E-ZPass Group. 'We are also implementing additional security measures to prevent similar scams in the future.'

In response to the scam, E-ZPass has announced plans to roll out enhanced security features, including encrypted transponders and real-time fraud detection systems.
