Duke Women's Basketball Triumphs Over NC State

Duke Women’s Basketball Stuns No. 2 NC State in Thrilling Overtime Victory

Durham, NC — March 29, 2025 — In a game that will be remembered as one of the greatest in program history, the Duke Blue Devils women’s basketball team pulled off a stunning 78-75 overtime victory against the No. 2-ranked NC State Wolfpack at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday night.

Led by junior guard Kayla Smith’s career-high 28 points, including a clutch three-pointer to force overtime, the Blue Devils (22-8, 12-6 ACC) handed the Wolfpack (28-2, 16-2 ACC) just their second loss of the season. The win also solidified Duke’s case for a top-four seed in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

'This team never stopped believing,' said Duke head coach Kara Lawson, who celebrated her 100th career win with the program. 'We knew we had to play our best basketball to beat an elite team like NC State, and our players stepped up in every way.'

The game was a back-and-forth battle, with Duke trailing by seven with under two minutes left in regulation before a furious rally, capped by Smith’s deep three with 4.8 seconds left, sent the game to overtime. In the extra period, Duke’s defense held strong, forcing two critical turnovers, while freshman Aaliyah Jackson sealed the win with two free throws in the final seconds.

NC State’s Saniya Rivers led all scorers with 31 points, but the Wolfpack struggled from the free-throw line, shooting just 65% (13-20) in the game.

With the victory, Duke now heads into the ACC Tournament with major momentum, while NC State will look to regroup before postseason play begins.

Duke will open ACC Tournament play on Thursday as the No. 3 seed.

NC State, still likely a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament, will await its next opponent.
