How exactly does alcohol affect the sex you experience? (A lot, it turns out).
Ahhh drunk sex. It’s not uncommon to set the mood with a sex partner, accompanied by a bottle or two of your favourite wine. Alcohol is called liquid courage for a reason. Some people use it to calm their nerves, others to loosen their inhibitions. This is because alcohol is a depressant that has a direct effect on the functional activity of the brain, particularly the frontal lobe. This part of the brain is responsible for a range of cognitive skills, from planning to thinking effectively - so the more a person drinks, the less control and judgement they have.
We are told not to drink and [insert pretty much any activity here], but when it comes to sex, there aren’t many reservations about drunk (consensual) sex. But how exactly does alcohol affect the sex you experience?
It’s not a secret that alcohol has a direct effect on both your physical and mental capabilities. However, it isn’t necessarily clear what all of these effects are. Dr Anatole Menon-Johansson, Clinical Director at sexual health charity Brook says alcohol changes a person’s sexual performance. During arousal, the body naturally prepares for sex by increasing the flow of blood to your genitals, causing them to swell and self-lubricate. But alcohol impacts this biological response.
So, for men and people with penises, an excess of alcohol can cause difficulty in getting and maintaining an erection . As for women and people with vaginas, a lack lubrication can be a problem. Orgasming can also be impacted, you will either be unable to reach climax, take longer to get there or have a less intense orgasm altogether.
“Generally, alcohol affects what we decide to do, how we go about doing it, our memory of it and then of course, our general performance,” Dr Menon-Johansson adds. “It's doesn't really enhance the process.”
Then, the rhetoric around alcohol making you more confident or kinkier in the bedroom isn’t quite accurate. You might feel that way but it is largely thoughtless behaviour guiding you, as a result of you not having the capacity to think things through properly.
At what point is someone too drunk to consent? Firstly, let’s define consent . The Sexual Offences Act 2003, Section 74 states consent is given if a person “agrees by choice and has the freedom and capacity to make that choice” in regards to oral, anal or vaginal penetration.
Alcohol can impact a person’s ability to make clear choices, but there is a difference between having a drink or two and feeling a small buzz and surpassing your limit. Andrea Sartor, counselling psychologist at Blueroots says, “If the alcohol involved is excessive and the person is intoxicated, then it is not possible to give clear-cut consent.”
Intoxication includes signs of confusion (a person not knowing where they are or who they are with), slurred or incoherent speech, a lack of bodily control and an inability to walk properly, loss of consciousness, wildly out of character behaviour and memory loss.
"“It really comes down to people owning up to their responsibility of how they treat other people"
“When we get the slurred speech, the incoherence and confusion, that's because the central nervous system has slowed down,” Sartor adds. “When people are intoxicated [to the point] where their central nervous system is on overload, they cannot give a full enthusiastic yes.”
A person showing any one of these signs of intoxication should not be engaged with sexually and should wait until they sober up to decide if they want to have sex. Sartor notes that it’s always best to exercise caution when it comes to drunk sex.
“It really comes down to people owning up to their responsibility of how they treat other people and making sure that they're communicating,” she says.
An inability to consent is one danger of drunk sex but if you always or even largely rely on being inebriated for any sexual activity, then it’s essential to be honest about your relationship with alcohol and sex.
Drinking too much, too often, doesn’t just have a short-term mood killer impact, it can lead to severe long-term mental and physical health implications such as sexual dysfunction (erectile dysfunction for people with penises and orgasmic dysfunction for people with vaginas) and a decrease in sexual desire.
Sartor says, “The depression-like symptoms of alcoholism often lead to a lack of motivation to do just about anything, including sex, and can make sex seem like more of a chore than intimacy with one’s partner.”
“If people need to drink to have sex, then it's worth asking them to reflect on why they need to do that,” Dr Menon-Johansson says. “If someone is just having drunk sex then there is a concern that they're hiding something by doing that. If they're hiding something, they might find it is better to try and unpack that, explore that and resolve that, so that they can actually have sex when they're sober.”
Additionally, according to Sartor, many people who think that they need alcohol to be drunk can possibly have an underlying mental health issue that has not been treated such as mood disorders, anxiety disorders , ADHD or PTSD.
If these disorders are not treated properly with mental health professionals or doctors it can make a person more vulnerable to misuse alcohol as an unhealthy coping mechanism.
If excessive drinking is exclusively related to sex, then sex therapy is a recommended first step to seek advice and help. Alternatively, if you think you have a wider drinking problem, get in touch with your GP or Alcoholics Anonymous .
