Recently, when I was visiting my son in Austin, a sunny, October afternoon, went from the mundane to the sublime.
Strolling back to Drew’s apartment after a delicious Greek meal at a local eatery, we discussed how we would get the remaining ingredients for our evening meal. We decided that upon our return to his apartment, we would drive to the grocery store. As we ambled across his parking lot, I noticed that I was the only one walking. Drew had stopped and with his phone in his hand, he gazed at the ground. I looked down on the asphalt, and there was a beautiful, yellow and black butterfly. Immediately, the words”luck” and unexpected visitors popped into my mind because my culture believes that butterflies symbolize both. And on this day, the symbolism was never more true.
As I looked closer, I noticed that the butterfly was attempting to fly. Valiantly, it struggled to flap its wings, but only flew several inches into the air and fluttered to the ground. Upon closer inspection, Drew and I noticed that one of its wings was broken. The broken half of the wing tried in vain to expand but flapped weakly downward. After taking pictures, Drew picked it up, which was not easy because the independent butterfly fought to protect itself from the perceived threat. However, cradling the butterfly, Drew laid it on a plant limb. Unfortunately, the butterfly fell, fruitlessly flapping its wings, flopping on the dirt. Drew guided the butterfly under the shelter of a plant. The winged creature was furloughed.
Silently, Drew and I proceeded to his apartment. Somehow the fate of the butterfly weighed heavily on my mind. Drew stated that he had work to do and grabbed his laptop, and I got online, using my laptop. I signed onto a counseling platform and began working. Engrossed in my session with a student, I vaguely noticed that Drew had began to move around his apartment.
From the periphery of my eyes, I noticed that Drew had grabbed a plastic container and had left the apartment. He returned a few minutes later with the covered container, which he placed in the refrigerator. After I asked, “Why?”, he said that he was going to fix the butterfly’s wing, and he had placed the butterfly in the refrigerator to calm it. As if he were in surgical theater, he cleared a surface and placed a clean white towel on it. On the towel Drew laid glue, my tweezers, and a clothes hangar. Afterwards, he cut two small, narrow pieces of paper and placed them next to his other supplies.
After several attempts (the butterfly was resistant to the hangar, which functioned as a restraint), Drew glued the two pieces of paper along the fracture of the butterfly’s wing, and then, he returned the butterfly to the container and placed the container in the refrigerator for a minute so that the glue would set. A minute later, Drew took the butterfly outside and set it on the limb of a small tree. The butterfly flew off the tree, and landed on the ground. As it tried to fly again, one of the pieces of paper fell off, and the butterfly flew upwards and landed on a tree leaf, opening and closing its wings. (I think that the mechanical engineer learned a lesson about aerodynamics.)
My son returned to his apartment and continued working on his laptop as if nothing momentous had happened. However, this mother was filled with pride that my child had grown up to be a wonderful, young man filled with empathy for creatures large and small. #proudmamamoment
As I reflect on that event, I wonder…. On a sunny, October afternoon, how many people walked by or stepped over Drew’s butterfly? On a sunny, October afternoon, my child looked down and changed the path of a butterfly’s journey through life, allowing it to gain its freedom, so that upon seeing it, “a forlorn and shipwrecked brother…shall take heart again” (Ralph Waldo Emerson, “A Psalm of Life”). As an educator, I tell my students to look up and reach for the stars. On a sunny, October afternoon, my son taught me to look down.
As child traveling from a third world country (or should I be politically correct and say “newly industrialized country”—not!), flying into JFK airport at night was spectacular. I left a country where electricity was cut off at 8 P.M. and saw a city of lights (sorry Paris, you are not…

For Me or You? As my mom has gotten older, she spends her time keeping track of relatives who are sick or dying (I guess that it is one more thing that I have to look forward to as I age). After she has identified which aunt, uncle, or…
