"Dream Boy" is a powerful movie, and I'm not saying that it shouldn't have been made or should be locked away in a vault somewhere, but I am saying it should come with a warning. If you are as sensitive, as affected by stories as I am -- do not watch this movie. In the beginning you'll be enchanted by the beautifully photographed rural setting, and the beautiful beginning of Roy and Nathan's love for each other. But as you begin to understand Nathan's past, your stomach will start to churn. And when you see what happens to him in the end, you will be infuriated and sickened to your very soul. On the other hand, if you're tougher than I am -- actually, I don't know how to finish that sentence. It disturbs me to think that there are people tough enough to watch this and not react strongly to it.

Coming of age movie that leaves you breathless. I was in the beginning looking at it as a tragic story. But then, I seen it through and appreciated its entire story line. I left with tears in my eyes, knowing love and lost, but returned BUT way more tragic underlines this movie. Its a tragic love story, but I found to hit me in a softer view point of it all. I am not going to give much away, let the movie speak volume and decide. Its at least worth a viewing. Please be aware, their is abuse in the story...... sad to say... That part kills me. All in all though, I loved it. You see not because its tragic story with a huge taboo, but I see it in the way that love never really dies.

Let me start by saying that it is extremely rare that any movie, good or bad, stirs enough emotion in me to write a review. This one did. I assumed this was going to be another coming of age movie per the description that comes with it. I assumed it would start out slow and leave me with a light good feeling by the end as these types of movies usually do. From the beginning and all the way till just before the climax of the movie all was as expected. But in the end it's rape and murder. As another reviewer put it..."And when you see what happens to him in the end, you will be infuriated and sickened to your very soul." As for myself it left me feeling emotionally assaulted! And yes infuriated! I feel tricked and betrayed by the producers. It has indeed troubled my soul for hours. I do not believe in censorship so therefore I will not say this movie should be taken off Amazon but I do believe the description of the movie should be amended to reflect that it is a movie about a crime...not love. Had I known this in advance I never would have watched it.

I want to give this movie zero stars because I do NOT recommend it AT ALL! That said, the direction, cinematography, scenic locations, music and performances of the 2 young men are all breathtaking and noteworthy. And yes, there is that one token actor in every Indy film that fails at their performance, this movie is no exception. I also Loved the real time approach to the development of the relationship. Stephen Bender plays Nathan, Maximillian Roeg (“Black Widow” actress Theresa Russell’s son) plays Roy and 70’s pop star Rickie Lee Jones plays Roy’s mother. BUT! The ending is so horribly tragic it is unbearable. I literally got no sleep after watching this due to not being able to get that imagery out of my head. Movies should inspire us, give us hope and escapism. It seems with movies, the only segment of the population that is not allowed to have a happy ending ever is gay men. And of course, I am not saying there are not movies about heartbreak or tragedy in the rest of the population, just feels like I can count on 1 hand how many quality movies involving 2 gay men actually have a happy ending. We know going into this movie it is a story of first love between 2 young men in the south, in the 70’s. That’s 3 Strikes against them from the get-go! We are already prepared for it to not have a happy ending but go into it hopeful. But it’s like producers say they will only put their money into the film if the ending is changed to a tragic one. Reading the reviews of those who also read the book seems to legitimize this theory. In this case, James Bolton wrote the film adaptation, was the awesome director but was also a co-producer.

I watched this movie when I went on a binge trying to find a happy ending LGBTQ movie. I liked the movie so much, but was a little confused by the ending. If you read the book (which isn't super long-I recommend it), it's clear that Nathan is indeed alive. Roy and him run off together. Most of the scenes are verbatim from the books which I really liked. In the books it shows a little more of Nathan's struggle in keeping his knowledge of fooling around with a guy from Roy. I felt so much more empathy for him in the truck scene in the book. But still the movie is good! I recommend it!

People are going to complain about the acting and the low budget stuff in this film... well the majority of gay films have been low budget. It wasn't until Brokeback Mountain or a little before that things were actually given a budget having said that I have seen far worse films. This movie was not the worst not the best either just there... I did not feel like I wasted my time though either. You have your basic hidden romance between two young men one who happens to have the usual brutal father who is church going and does not exactly see eye to eye with his son. I liked the two leads as both were good looking and the love scenes seemed believable. The end was not so bad as I have read on here, I got the impression from the smiles that everything was going to be alright between the two men, least I hope so and they would continue from there.

The first half of the movie plods along with slow pacing, bad acting, boring dialogue, and a muddled plot. Then, almost exactly halfway through, a plot twist wakes the viewer up for another twenty minutes or so. Then it goes completely off the rails. At the end I'm thinking, 'wtf did I just watch?' I read other reviews that said the ending was 'open to interpretation.' That's absurd. You're left wondering, is he or isn't he? I honestly believe that the production budget ran out completely before the end of filming. That or the director was on some seriously major drugs. Actually, there is some evidence that the budget was very low to begin with as I read on IMDb that the director wanted to shoot the movie in Oregon but budget constraints force them to go to Louisiana instead. Maybe I'll take a look at the book and see if there's something in it which made this nonsensical story sensical. Save your time. It isn't even worth the eye candy. If you could call it that.

I like the movie itself. However, I didn't realize that the packaging and the movie format was from another country. Fortunately, I have a DVD Player that plays DVD's from different countries. This is my only complaint. I did like the movie, but I need to get the book. I think the movies leaves too much information out about the relationship between the boy and his father.
