How to get into drawing hentai? (No like seriously)
A place for artists from redditgetsdrawn, sketchdaily, and other art-related subs to come together and discuss all non-business things related to art, including technique, art crit, media, culture, art history, etc.
But look... look... before you just call me a weird, downvote, and go about your day hear me out.
The hentai area of art has honestly sky rocketed in quality over the years. There’s tons of artists that has works that look amazingly drawn or well animated, it’s definitely an area full of passionate people.
Like honestly if you were to come to me a while ago and ask me if I’d pay some random artist $5 a month for some hentai, I’d tell you “hell no, I’ll just go to hentaihaven”, but now, the quality is so good I’d pay more than $25 between different artists to support them for more.
usually don’t get any attention from my drawings, maybe I’m just not popular enough, maybe its because I don’t have the hand of god, maybe it’s because I don’t draw fan art that much. BUT It’s only when I dipped my toe into drawing hentai once that I got major attention. Non of my original works since then got nearly as much attention as that, if I had continued drawing porn, I’d probably would have a decent amount of followers by now.
Honestly when thinking about how I can earn money with art, hentai comes to mind almost immediately. I can make full on hentai comics and have the uncensored versions on patreon with an early release for patrons, and I can do animations and have them release first on patreon too.
Now I know what you’re thinking, “HentaiGuy... you really want to draw hentai full time as a living? What about your personal projects?” And with that I say, I’ll keep a schedule of drawing personal stuff maybe three days a week and Hentai also three days a week, with one off day too breath, play video games, watch anime, or whatever. (I have a feeling that’s gonna crash and burn like my sanity in this pandemic)
The main problem I see is becoming one in general. I know what type of porn I will draw, I’m bi so I’m doing both yuri and yaoi. BUT how do I go about drawing porn?
One idea I had for animations was to compile a bunch of videos I found hot and use them for reference, but I have no idea what to do for a hentai manga.
And do I make a separate porn account and keep SWF stuff and Porn stuff separate on sites like Twitter? Should I make a some hentai comics and art first, post them all on patreon and slowly trickle them out to the public?
How should I get people interested in my work? I noticed some artists either do just rule 34 or rule 34 and their own characters. Should I do both too so that my audience isn’t absolutely split between people coming to me for my rule 34 work and people only coming to me for my original characters?
Gah! There’s so many questions! And hopefully you fellow men of culture can help me get started with this.
Okayyy, I'm an artist who has had an alternative NSFW account for quite a while (well... It was in Tumblr until the porn ban, so I had to flee to Twitter).
I'm not an expert by ANY means, but since I see that no one has helped you yet, here's what I've found out:
Learn to draw well, keep improving, and LEARN ANATOMY. You need to nail down anatomy as well as you can, since you will draw nudes.
If you're going to animate, learn how to. Copying videos is not enough: you need to learn how to actually animate: from learning an animation software to learning the 12 principles of animation.
If you're going to make comics, learn how to. This means learning paneling, perspective, composition, etc. All this already works for pics, but in comic you also need to know how to tell a story through panels. Hentai can be very engaging thanks to how the comic's done. So yeah, learn storytelling .
Combining fanart + originals is the most advisable path, specially when starting, but you can still make yourself known with originals only. I've noticed that people who succeed with originals only (porn or not) it's because there's something unique about their art, or at least something that appeals to some people. This leads us to...
Find your niche. People have told me my art is cute (yes, even my NSFW), so I'm trying to capitalize on that. You should find your style and your preferred themes, and attract people who might like them. Niches are better than aiming for a general audience since niches will provide you with lots more of feedback and money from people who have a hard time finding stuff in the niche you're in.
Find your style. Related to point 4: people who have a distinct style often attract more people. HOWEVER, style doesn't only equal "drawing style", but also "how you do things". ShindoL is famous not because of their style, but because of the style of their storytelling (aka, soulcrushing hentai drama).
Learn other social media skills, and dedicate some time to them. You're not exempt from networking, following other people, giving them feedback and nice comments, making giveaways/gifts from time to time, etc. Even knowing a bit of social media marketing can help (but this is porn so you can't go the exact same way as with normal stuff).
Be careful with Patreon. Patreon was perfect until they raised their fee (it was 5% first, but now it's at 12% iirc?) and for some reason their admins began banning hentai pics and even some normal anime pics (probably because for them anime characters look like children so it muuuuust be child porn 🤦🏿‍♀️ ). I don't know how's it going right now, but I'd look into alternatives, first like SubscribeStar.
Always be mindful where you make accounts. Related to the previous point, and also a logical fact: not all sites allow explicit porn. Do TONS of research. (NOTE: making your own website is always the best idea when it comes to porn since the only ToS to follow is "don't do illegal things". But that's another can of worms...)
Making real money with nsfw materials is still HARD. Just because people are thirsty doesn't mean it's easy to get money from making nsfw art, specially when you're starting. All I've mentioned in point 7 is as important as points 1, 2, 3, 5 and 6, and making people know you, let alone PAY YOU is a nightmare. So many people still think that paying for porn is useless, so yeah, it's a tough battle.
Despite all this, don't give up. This is a tough path to take, it WON'T be easy, but giving up is a surefire way of never achieving what you want, so remember to not give up.

For animation, I got the 12 principles down, I just really need to practice. I got The Animator’s Survival Kit to help with that.
As for the comics, yeah I’m definitely not experienced with that. I can come up with ideas for an animation rather than a comic way easier because of how my mind works. Like I can even slow down an a animated scene in my head frame by frame, but I can’t translate that into a comic. It’s weird.
But I’m definitely on the right track with the art style, for the longest I’ve been all over the place with it, but now that I see exactly what it is, it just need to be improved. But ah, another fellow cutesy person I see! Honestly considering I’m not into drawing super thicc girls I might have to have my own website. A lot of petite anime girls get called lolis and it sucks. I guess my niche would be that I draw cutesy skinny girls honestly lmao. Patreon wouldn’t like that though...

Honestly I have no idea. I spent years selling anime and furry art and literally never sold anything NSFW. I wouldn’t have minded but nobody ever commissioned me to draw it. That’s right: even furries didn’t ask me for porn.
