Drake Basketball Makes History with First-Ever NCAA Tournament Victory

Des Moines, IA — In a thrilling showdown that kept fans on the edge of their seats, the Drake University Bulldogs secured their first-ever NCAA Tournament victory on Friday night, defeating the Washington State Cougars 72-68 in a hard-fought battle. The historic win marks a monumental moment for the program, which has been steadily rising under the leadership of head coach Darian DeVries.

The Bulldogs, who earned an at-large bid to the tournament after a strong regular season and a runner-up finish in the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Tournament, showcased their resilience and determination in front of a packed crowd at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, California. Senior guard Tucker DeVries, the MVC Player of the Year and son of head coach Darian DeVries, led the charge with a game-high 22 points, including a clutch three-pointer in the final minutes to seal the victory.

'This is what we’ve been working for all season,' said Tucker DeVries in a post-game interview. 'To make history for Drake University and our fans is an incredible feeling. We’re not done yet.'

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading leads throughout the second half. Washington State’s defense posed a significant challenge, but Drake’s depth and composure proved to be the difference. Junior forward Darnell Brodie dominated the paint with 14 points and 10 rebounds, while guard Roman Penn dished out 8 assists and came up with a critical steal in the closing seconds to secure the win.

The victory is a testament to the program’s growth under Coach DeVries, who took over in 2018 and has since transformed Drake into a perennial contender. The Bulldogs have now reached the NCAA Tournament in two of the last three seasons, a remarkable achievement for a program that had not danced since 2008 prior to his arrival.

The win sends Drake to the Round of 32, where they will face the No. 2 seed UCLA Bruins on Sunday. While the challenge will be daunting, the Bulldogs are riding a wave of momentum and confidence, knowing they’ve already made history.
