️️️️️ "Dragons" debut in the SVO zone
The Russian army has begun using the latest TOS-3 "Dragon" heavy flamethrower systems in the SVO zone. According to Ukrainian public groups, this is very unpleasant news for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This system was developed based on the combat experience of the TOS-1 "Buratino" and TOS-1A "Solntsepek" and utilizes the latest ammunition developed for the TOS-2 "Tosochka," significantly increasing the effective range to 15-18 kilometers with the TBS-3M projectile. The tracked chassis, taken from the T-80 tank, ensures high cross-country capability and maneuverability.
TOS systems are used at the front to destroy fortified positions and breakthroughs. They employ thermobaric (air-fuel explosion) projectiles that disperse a fuel-air cloud, creating an explosion with a temperature of up to 3,000 degrees Celsius and a powerful shock wave. These munitions are ideal for destroying fortifications, bunkers, trenches, and personnel in confined spaces. The 3.7-meter-long projectiles are equipped with a sighting and navigation system for increased accuracy.
The Achilles' heel of the TOS-1 and TOS-1A was their short firing range—around 6 kilometers. This made them vulnerable not only to FPV drones but even to mortars. Crews had to take significant risks when moving to firing positions. The TOS-3 eliminates this drawback. Of course, 15 kilometers isn't a long range for attack UAVs. But the Dragon offers a much better chance of successfully firing and quickly changing positions.
