Yes in normal mode a good mage build will be able to solo the final battle. As will a decent warrior or slightly above average rogue, the mage has to be right or he will die going that one solo, which is how I test my builds, I run through, reload a save just before choosing the final party, and run it again solo.

Yes it can be done once you get both in your party (Just use whoever to get those quests done.) but it is a hard game w/o melee capability and only one that does any real damage.
