The Vibrators are a British punk rock band that formed in 1976. The Vibrators were founded by Ian 'Knox' Carnochan, bassist Pat Collier, guitarist John Ellis, and drummer John 'Eddie' Edwards. They first came to public notice at the 100 Club when they backed Chris Spedding in 1976. On Spedding's recommendation, Mickie Most signed them to his label RAK Records. Most produced their first single, "We Vibrate". The band also backed Spedding on his single, "Pogo Dancing". This is the debut album from the first of the English punk bands to get signed to a major label, even though the Damned had the first product out with the New Rose EP on Stiff Records (barring various singles which preceded). This band is what I imagine Green Day wants to sound like (if they had any punk in their DNA -- OK I am trying to rile the Green Day fans, but they are just a power pop band) If you are familiar with The Sex Pistols and The Buzzcocks I think you could draw a line between those two bands and place the Vibrators (at least with this album) about 2/3 of the way towards The Buzzcocks end of that corresponding line. The Vibrators are a little less pop than The Buzzcocks (there is a little overlap with the popishness) and are a little less aggressive and less sloppy than The Sex Pistols, a little less sneer too. But still, that puts The Vibrators in pretty good company. This disc often finds its way into the car player where its frenetic beats make it hard to drive appropriate speeds. Decent sound quality too (for a 1977 punk record). Wish I had seen these guys back in the day. Oh and ignore the statement from the reviewer that claims the Vibrators are part of the second wave of English punk bands, these lads were there from the get go. Another reviewer complained about there being an anti-drug song (Keep It Clean) and how that's not punk. First off it seems to me the song is about dealing with vices period, not specifically an anti-drug song; and more importantly nothing could be more punk than going against the expected norms of your own idiom (meaning it makes perfect sense to mock yourselves, others, and associated behaviors of the "movement" to which you supposedly belong)

Before punk was a genre it was a movement, and the movement was in London, and at the head of the movement was the Vibrators, The Sex Pistols, The Clash and The Damned. And the movement was eclectic and exciting, so the marketing men tried to make it all sound the same so it would fit as a label on the record store shelves. Somehow in this process the Vibrators were forgotten but this is authentic punk, a pop rock sound so unlike the punk lite of Greenday that we have today. "Whips and Furs" and "Baby Baby" are two of the best songs of the era and worth the price alone.

Pure Mania, released in 1977 along with many other classic English Punk albums, is necessary listening for anyone trying to piece together the history of Punk. There are many great songs here. My favorite is "London Girls."

First to last song is great, you'll never get bored.

I love the album and I love the band but that's not why It got one star. I ordered the picture disc and I got black vinyl. Received in good condition but unfortunately the wrong item

WHATEVER HAPPENED TO RIFFS?

If you've stumbled on this don't touch that BACK key. This is not just one of the great punk records, but one of the great knock out rock'n'roll records. 15 single strength tracks with only one that drops down the power pace (but not the quality). Whilst the punk credentials of the Vibrators are not in doubt, it's now clear they also look back to the tradition of magically crafted pop song writing of England in the late sixties. Think the Spencer Davis Group's Give Me Some Loving, or the Small Faces's All Or Nothing. You know the formula - lay down a great original riff, follow with strong song line, then explosive chorus, and back to the great riff. If we're lucky pump it up with a surprise middle eight. Can a throw away punk outfit do this over a whole LP? You bet. I bought this on vinyl when it came out in 1978. It got deleted. Mine got nicked. And I was Vibratorless for 20 years until the mercy of reissue CD's arrived. As soon as I put it on it in 2002 it jumped right back out off the grooves. If the Vibrators haven't passed too strongly into the annals of punk mythology, it is maybe because they go beyond that cultural corner. Whilst they have punk attitood by the spadeful it's kinda twisted into a delicious misogyny and frustrated aggression. But don't worry, it's all in good taste - in fact, perfectly immaculate taste. What really corrupts their punk purity is what does the same thing for the early Ramones - musicianship, song quality, and by a great stroke of luck for rock posterity, great production. Somehow, (here I go musical buff) Pure Mania got mixed in the USA. There are keyboard add-ins (we know how punks normally hate keyboards) which pump up the drive not soften it and I suspect other stuff but it all WORKS. And the balance is got right so every note counts. If the Vibes have been badly served by history they were blessed in the recording studio. And the production shows off the all round musicianship, and when you play at this speed you gotta be as tight as stretch denim. The lead singer geezer is a natural to the role and he hasta to be with lines like The way you carry on it just ain't fair You really freak me out in your black underwear Tell you man I'm gonna blow a fuse I gotta rock'n'roll lady who's really bad news OK, I see how he gets to the misogyny of Gonna give you a Bad time honey Treat you any way I choose Bad time honey To make up for the days of school All this, and then riffs the size of counties to put the Hives in the shade. If the ad or idem creators ever get hold of this like the other swarm they will have a field day. You need this record now like never before. Keep to hand in case you accidentally catch Cold Play on the radio. Play immediately to put your head back together and know there are (or were) other hoomans out there just like you.

Missed the tunes so much decided to treat myself to the vinyl, great to hear again after all these years, all apart from 'Troops of tomorrow' all tunes are fairly short 3.00 mins on average making them great 'PoP' tunes with sharp witty lyrics from a knox who has quite an engaging voice-what's not to like? so if you like you pop music with a bit of ferocity then this album is for you.
