Doris Day, the legendary actress and singer, died in her California home on Monday, May 13, at the age of 97. The Doris Day Animal Foundation confirmed the news to the Associated Press . In a statement the foundation added that Day “had been in excellent physical health for her age, until recently contracting a serious case of pneumonia, resulting in her death.” No memorial plans have been announced yet.
She was born Doris Mary Ann Kappelhoff in Cincinnati and changed her last name to Day when she began singing on the radio in the 1940s, according to People . Day was eventually hired by Warner Bros. to star in the studio's romantic musicals. In the 1950s and early '60s, Day rose to superstardom with films like Teacher’s Pet (1958), Pillow Talk (1959), and That Touch of Mink (1962). Her signature song became “Whatever Will Be, Will Be (Que Sera, Sera)” from Alfred Hitchcock’s 1956 film The Man Who Knew Too Much .
Day was nominated for an Academy Award for Pillow Talk , in which she costarred with Rock Hudson. She also starred on The Doris Day Show on CBS from 1966 to 1973.
The actress was known for her squeaky clean "good girl" image onscreen, but that didn't seem to always sit well with her. “I have the unfortunate reputation of being Miss Goody Two-Shoes, America’s Virgin, and all that, so I’m afraid it’s going to shock some people for me to say this, but I staunchly believe no two people should get married until they have lived together,” she wrote in her 1976 memoir, Doris Day: Her Own Story .
Day was the recipient of many awards , including the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1989, the Presidential Medal of Freedom from George W. Bush in 2004, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2008. In her later years she was mostly retired from show business—though she did release an album in 2011. Instead, Day turned her focus to the Doris Day Animal Foundation , which advocates for animal rights.
She was married four times: to Al Jorden from 1941 to 1943, George Weidler from 1946 to 1949, Martin Melcher from 1951 until his death in 1968, and Barry Comden from 1976 to 1981. She had a son with Melcher, Terry Melcher, a famed music producer who died at age 62 in November 2004.

I was Born in the morning (between 4-5 am) 17 may 1991 (Taurus) to a Russian small town in Siberia called Prokopievsk. I grew up with my mother and stepfather. I got stepfather when I was 1 year old.
I never saw my real father growing up. Not even in a photo. I never even heard from him. My Mom was pregnant with me at 16 years old. She fell in love with another guy who was 21 year old and they had sex once.
They didn’t expect to have a baby but she became a mother at 17 years old. He left her asap as he was not ready to have a family.
In one year my Mom meet my stepfather and we leave together for next 17 years. My Mom love me a lot , stepfather and I never were friends. Even if my relationship with my stepfather wasn’t good, all of his family loved and adored me a lot.
They were always hiding from me the fact that i am not a blood relative of them but at 14 years old i got the truth, for some reason it didn’t shock me , everything was the same-not any change. I didn’t even say to anyone that I got this news.
When i was about 7-8 years old my grandma moved in with us (my Mom’s mother). Because my step father was part of the Russian Mafia, our life never was calm enough. Enemies of my stepfather fired at the house of my grandma when she was visiting us. From this day we all live together all four of us.
In general, our family had love and support for each other and I was everyone’s favorite person in the house.
All my schools were in my hometown but i had to change schools like 5 times because my parents had to move or because they decided to separate or get back together. For this reason it was a bit hard for me to keep friends and after every move I made new friendships but my studying was came first always. At every school I was successful.
In 2008, I graduated and moved to another city to go to university. As I had high scores I won the contest. Passed all examinations and got a budget place at the university. So I didn’t have to pay for my studies.
My university was 600 km away from my hometown but still in Siberia, in a town called Tomsk. A small students’ city.
I was staying at a house for students and studying international languages (mainly French) I was supposed to become a teacher and/or interpreter. I was very lucky to be busy with university from 8 am till 4 pm. I was working from 5 pm till 9 pm about every kind of student job: cleaning offices, distributing flyers in the street, home tutoring (teaching kids French), stationary seller and other small jobs. It was important to be payed every day or week at least. So i didn’t take any money from my family. Plus the university paid me for being a great student. All was good and I was happy as I accomplished all of my goals that I had during this period.
One day just walking on the street I saw a paper announcement on the wall-We’re looking for webcam models-and a phone number. I got curious and called. Like that I started to do webcam work in the evenings. I was a webcam model for 2 years. University in the morning, webcam work in the evening, go back to the student house and sleep late evening and from the morning it would repeat. I had a lot of attention from boys and girls but I didn’t have enough time for my private life. She also has served as the voiceover for Major League Baseball's "I Live For This" promotional campaign. She has also played the voice of Catwoman in the 2007 animated series The Batman.
A 2008 Vanity Fair article linked her romantically with former President Bill Clinton. She denied the connection, saying on the June 9 episode of the TV show Live with Regis and Kelly "It is such a crazy, outrageous lie... I met him three times at events. [These rumors] disturbed me on so many levels."
She has appeared on Broadway three times, as Sally Bowles in the revival of Cabaret , in the revival of the sex farce Boeing-Boeing , and played Rosie Alvarez in the 2010 Broadway revival of Bye Bye Birdie at the Roundabout Theatre Company.
In 2011, she appeared as a recurring character in the HBO series How to Make It in America . Her portrayal of Donatella Versace in Lifetime's House of Versace earned her praise from fashion critic Cathy Horyn.
Gershon's first book written for adults, In Search of Cleo: How I Found My Pussy and Lost My Mind , is the true story of the hunt for her runaway cat and was released on October 11, 2012.
On December 19, 2014, it was announced that Gershon would guest star in Glee ' s sixth and final season as Pam, the mother of Blaine Anderson (Darren Criss).
