Don’t Say A Word is a psychological crime drama about Michael Douglas being forced to seek information from Brittany Murphy for a group of criminals. The movie begins with different plot lines that don’t seem like they’re related and then brings them together which shows some good writing. The heart of the movie is Douglas who plays a psychiatrist working against the clock to try to get Murphy a damaged young woman in the psych ward to talk. This creates a good amount of tension. Thankfully the movie didn’t go for the cliché and have a big giant action packed conclusion with car chases and a bunch of gun play. From the start the movie was about how smart Douglas was and that’s how it ends as well.

“Don’t Say A Word” is, honestly, a little less than mediocre. I knew this when I rented it, but I was moved to watch it for Brittany Murphy, who I believe had potential to be a big star if she had lived long enough and chosen (or been offered) more good, serious scripts instead of rom-comming it up or playing second-fiddle to another actress. This movie stars her, a fortyish, handsome Michael Douglas, Sean Bean playing the villain (another reason to watch it), Oliver Platt, Famke Janssen, and Jennifer Esposito. It is a watchable if kind of ridiculous movie. I won’t go over the plot since you can just read the description. It is good for a lazy Sunday watch, partly for the star power, and partly for the silliness of it. It is a bit dark, as it involves the kidnapping of a child, and B Murphy plays a very traumatized, damaged character. The best I can say about the acting is that everyone seemed to do their best with the material they were given. To the extent that several performances are a bit over-the -top, this must have had more to do with the way the actors were directed than with their actual abilities, as all of these are very capable actors. If it were MORE over-the-top, you could call it “stupid-fun”. Also, the script is just not good. Because of the dark material, I can’t call this movie “fun”, but it is engaging enough. What it needed was a shot of Nicolas Cage, who, to me, makes even the lousiest of movies entertaining to watch, and brings the energy level up in stupid-fun movies like “Face/Off” and “Con Air”. If he had played the father or the villain, this might have fit into that category. Michael Douglas is a good actor and Sean Bean makes a very convincing villain, but a movie like this would have benefitted from the director embracing the crappiness of the script and bringing the drama up from flat and silly to insane. The serious approach here is actually a bad choice, IMHO. So this is a sort-of recommend. If you’re in the mood for Great Cinema, this is not the movie to watch. But if you like these actors and are in the mood for a mediocre thriller (that is literally one of my entertainment “moods”), you might enjoy a couple of hours of this.

I read a couple of negative reviews of DON'T SAY A WORD when it first came out. I have to wonder if we saw the same movie. I think too many people over-analyze thrillers, instead of allowing themselves to be entertained. More than any other genre, thrillers rely on your visceral reaction to what's going on, not the logical. Don't get me wrong, logic is important to thrillers, otherwise they're not believable. But after a certain point, you should just let the film entertain you. DON'T SAY A WORD does just that. Michael Douglas plays a celebrated child psychiatrist married to a gorgeous amazon (the talented and underrated Famke Janssen, easily the most beautiful woman in the world), with a six-year old daughter (Sky Cole Bartusiak) who, unlike most child characters in thrillers, is not irritating and cloying. Anyhow, the family's thanksgiving plan are disrupted when the munchkin is abducted in the middle of the night by a gang of jewel thieves (led by the equally talented and underrated Sean Bean). Turns out they need the good doctor to coax out some information from a "schizophrenic" patient (the terrific Brittany Murphy) by the end of the day, or daughter goes bye-bye. The rest of the flick moves at lightning speed as Dr. Conrad races against time to get the information from the girl. Parallel storylines involving a tough cop (Jennifer Esposito, easily the second most beautiful woman in the world after Famke)who inadverdently finds herself on the trail of the thieves, and Famke Janssen trapped in her apartment because of ber broken leg lend fuel to this already brightly-burning fire of a movie. Best sequence involves intercutting of Jennifer chasing Michael and Brittany, and Famke fighting off a murderous assassin despite her cast. Speaking of Famke's sequence, never before have I cheered when a bad guy got what was coming to him. Moral of the story? A desperate mother will still kick your [butt], leg cast or not. All in all, there never is any doubt about how this movie will all end, but getting there is a thrill ride from hell. Which is what a thriller should aspire to be. This is not rocket science, just rock-solid entertainment.

EXCELLENT movie! Very suspenseful, nail biting," sitting on edge of your chair" kind of movie! Michael Douglas is SUPERB as a brilliant New York City Psychiatrist who has to get inside the head of a young teenage female catatonic patient (Brittany Murphy) who has a 6-digit number stored in her head that Michael Douglas has to retrieve for thugs who have kidnapped his young daughter before they kill her. Brittany Murphy was absolutely AWESOME in this movie. She had her character down to a science! I gave it 5 stars! It is most definitely a MUST SEE! If you like suspense, you're going to ❤ "Don't Say A Word"! One of my all time favorites!!
