Dominican Republic Announces Major Investment in Renewable Energy to Combat Climate Change

Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – April 8, 2025

In a bold move to address climate change and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, the Dominican Republic has unveiled a $500 million initiative to expand its renewable energy infrastructure. President Luis Abinader announced the plan today, emphasizing the country’s commitment to sustainability and energy independence.

The project, dubbed 'Energía Verde DR 2030,' aims to increase the nation’s renewable energy capacity by 50% over the next five years. Key components include the construction of new solar farms in the southwestern region, wind energy projects along the northern coast, and modernized hydroelectric plants.

'This is not just an environmental imperative but an economic opportunity,' President Abinader stated during a press conference. 'By investing in clean energy, we are creating jobs, lowering energy costs, and protecting our natural resources for future generations.'

The Dominican Republic, known for its pristine beaches and vibrant tourism industry, has been increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather events linked to climate change, including stronger hurricanes and rising sea levels. The new initiative aligns with the country’s pledge under the Paris Agreement to cut carbon emissions by 25% by 2030.

International organizations, including the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank, have expressed support for the plan, with preliminary agreements in place for partial funding.

Environmental activists have praised the move but urge swift implementation. 'The time for action is now,' said local climate advocate María Castillo. 'We hope this marks the beginning of a true green revolution in the Caribbean.'

If successful, the Dominican Republic could become a regional leader in renewable energy, setting an example for other island nations grappling with energy challenges in the face of a changing climate.
