Soon after coming to Allred prison in Texas, Bret Ramos claimed me as his own. He told me I had two choices: I could submit, or I could die. Thus began my life as a prison sex slave.
What most people don't understand is that rape in prison isn't like it is on the outside. It's not random or chaotic. It's planned and methodical. It's business. The gangs trade amongst themselves to determine who is going to be with whom. And other inmates didn't dare touch me without clearing it first with my owner.
Ramos would rape me once, twice, sometimes three times a day. Then he would force me to clean his cell, make his bed, or cook food for him. Eventually he demanded that I have sex with his friends, who took to calling me "Coco." When a different sex slave was badly beaten for refusing sex, he said the same thing would happen to me if I didn't comply.
When I was finally transferred to a different cell block, I was told by Cliff Brown that he and his gang had "bought" me. That's when the prostitution escalated. They made me perform sex with dozens of other inmates -- white gangs, Mexican gangs, black gangs. Sometimes it was anal. Sometimes oral. Sometimes both. They did it in cells, in the shower, on the stairs. The going rate was five or ten dollars in commissary a fuck. Eventually I was moved to another building. Waiting for me there was La Brigada. At the next building it was the Akin Soldiers. Then the Ivory Kings.
I pleaded with the guards, the warden, and the classification committee time and again for safekeeping. Each time I was met with deaf ears and laughter. They told me that because I was a homosexual, it didn't matter. They told me to "fight or fuck." The rape continued. The prostitution continued. And with it, my shame grew and grew. Eventually I couldn't face the constant humiliation anymore. I was suicidal.
At last, I wrote the ACLU and told them I wanted to kill myself. They flew to the prison and contacted the prison director. And for the first time since my ordeal began eighteen months earlier, I was put in safekeeping.
I was released to a halfway house in December and now live in my own apartment as I try to move my life forward. I'm getting counseling and the medical attention I need. I spend my days working as a youth counselor and hope to start a nonprofit organization. But every day is a struggle. I'm always very aware of my surroundings. I watch my back. I hate crowded rooms. And the nightmares of being raped persist.
Tougher still is the struggle to move past the shame and guilt. Sometimes I blame myself. I think, If I had only listened to my grandmother and stayed out of trouble, I wouldn't have gotten into this. Sometimes I start analyzing the situation, I start looking at the picture from all types of angles, and I start thinking, Why me? Why am I so weak? I just need to move forward.

A brutal video showing Russian prison guards beating a prisoner has emerged, again raising questions about safety inside the country’s justice system.
The recording, published on Friday by opposition newspaper Novaya Gazeta , dates from 29 June 2017. It is an uncomfortable watch.
It apparently shows a prisoner, identified in the video as Yevgeny Makarov, being held down on a table and beaten repeatedly with batons on his legs and the soles of his feet.
The man is stripped and beaten further, before prison officers begin a waterboarding technique. He is heard howling, shouting and begging for mercy and appears to lose consciousness. From the dialogue in the video, it appears the brutal punishment was meted out after Mr Makarov insulted a prison officer.
The recording ends after 10 minutes, when the naked Mr Makarov is returned to the table. The torture at this point does not appear to have finished but the video is turned off.
Prison officers are obliged to wear recording devices – and keep them on at all times in prisons. In practice, however, the requirement is only partially observed and it is highly unusual for evidence of alleged torture to reach the public.
The recording was reportedly passed to Novaya Gazeta after being leaked to lawyer Irina Biryukova, of advocacy group Public Verdict. Ms Biryukova told The Independent she could not divulge information about how the video was leaked but confirmed it was filmed by a prison officer. Her group received the recording, along with “several other” videos, around two weeks ago, she said.
The lawyer had already been investigating reports of torture at the IK-1 colony in provincial Yaroslavl, northeast of Moscow , where the violence is alleged to have taken place. IK-1 has a reputation for violence. It was used to hold opposition activists jailed after the Bolotnaya rally against Russian president Vladimir Putin in 2012.
According to several reports, “difficult” prisoners were routinely beaten by police officers, starved and worse. Until now, there had been no video evidence to support prisoners’ claims and prison authorities have previously dismissed requests to start an investigation.

Ms Biryukova said she travelled to the Yaroslavl prison five days after the June 29 incident. It was the second time her client – jailed for grievous bodily harm – had been beaten, she said. The lawyer was initially denied access to Mr Makarov, but state ombudsman Tatyana Moskalkova intervened, and prison authorities relented.
She recalled what she saw: “He could hardly walk. His heels were badly beaten and already infected. His skin was broken, his buttocks beaten. His [anus] had been beaten. He had bruises in his eyes and his arms were damaged where the handcuffs had dug in.”
The lawyer says the incident is far from an isolated one.
“I’m afraid this is widespread practice, but in some regions the authorities manage to cover up their tracks more successfully,” she said.
A short while after the publication of the video, the Russian State Penitentiary Service and the Yaroslavl State Investigative Committee announced they would begin an investigation into the incident.

A l’origine de ce livre, un mémoire d’un master en criminologie. Nina Califano a à peine retravaillé son texte pour qu’il soit publié sous le titre, « Sexualité incarcérée » . Dès la quatrième de couverture, on comprend que ce mémoire n’est pas comme les autres : de sa recherche, il est sobrement dit qu’elle « fut particulièrement distinguée ».
Les vrais éloges sont dans la préface. Un travail « exemplaire sur le plan scientifique » ; « un mémoire de recherche d’une qualité exceptionnelle qui devait absolument être mis à la disposition du plus grand nombre ».
Quand j’ai rencontré la jeune femme de 24 ans, elle m’a impressionnée. Reçue à l’école de magistrature, elle s’apprête à devenir magistrate. Nina Califano maîtrise parfaitement son sujet, pourtant très riche. C’est du droit, de la socio, de la philo. Et c’est passionnant.
Rue69. Dans votre livre, vous pointez les paradoxes de la sexualité en prison : elle n’est pas interdite mais les actes obscènes sont condamnables.
Nina Califano. Dans le code de procédure pénal, il n’est pas jamais évoqué le terme de sexualité. Pareil dans les règlements intérieurs. C’est un non-dit.
C’est comme si ça n’existait pas. Par contre, il y a cette disposition qui prévoit que tout acte obscène imposé à la vue des surveillants ou des autres détenus est passible de sanction disciplinaire. Par ailleurs, les textes de droit commun sur l’exhibition sont applicables aussi.
En théorie, une personne détenue peut donc être sanctionnée deux fois, au titre du droit commun et au titre du droit carcéral. En pratique, les sanctions restent dans le cadre disciplinaire et on ne verra pas un détenu pour exhibition condamné devant un tribunal.
Ça ne se fait pas, mais ça reste possible. C’est souvent cette idée qui règne par rapport à la sexualité en prison. C’est possible. Tout fonctionne à l’arbitraire. Il n’y a pas de règles, dans un monde qui devrait pourtant être régi par les règles.
Parlons de votre méthode : vous avez animé un atelier de littérature avec des détenus.
J’étais adhérente au Groupement étudiant national d’enseignement aux personnes incarcérées ( Genepi ) et dans ce cadre j’animais un atelier d’écriture et de littérature. C’est comme ça que j’ai pu rencontrer des détenus. Un jour j’ai lu « L’Etranger » de Camus :
Pour moi, ce livre ne parlait pas de sexualité, il y a juste cette phrase qui fait référence aux femmes. Mais en leur lisant, j’ai vu les détenus changer de visage… Il y avait un point douloureux, un nœud s’est crée avec cette petite phrase.
L’un deux a fait une blague, sur leur condition sexuelle, leur frustration. Sachant que derrière le rire, il y a souvent des choses, j’en ai profité pour expliquer ma démarche.
En maisons d’arrêt, il y a beaucoup de rigolades sur ce sujet et l’impression d’être dans une bande de potes que ça travaille, comme des ados qui parlent de ça parce qu’ils n’y touchent pas encore. Mais en centre de détention, quand on finit par en parler, c’est toujours avec une grande pudeur, une grande retenue.
Au XIXe siècle, vous racontez comment la sexualité des prisonniers (déjà) est considérée comme honteuse. Pourquoi ? En vous lisant, on a l’impression que le fondement de cette idée, c’est que le plaisir sexuel du détenu est intolérable car associé à une peine trop douce.
Oui c’est tout à fait ça. L’idée qui prévaut c’est celle de la peine, la peine dans tous les sens du terme. Ce n’est pas la peine privative de liberté, c’est la peine globale. Et donc tout ce qui n’est pas de l’ordre de la peine et a fortiori de l’ordre du plaisir, c’est prohibé. On doit rester dans un cadre de pénitence.
Mais même certains détenus ont intégré cette idée-là, qu’ils sont punis. Quand on parle de sexualité, la première chose qu’ils évoquent c’est qu’il n’y a rien à dire parce qu’ils n’ont pas à en avoir une. Ils sont en prison.
Vous parlez de masturbation et vous dites que beaucoup de détenus l’utilisent comme moyen pour s’endormir.
C’est toujours difficile de faire des généralités, mais il y a énormément de problèmes pour s’endormir en détention. Souvent les détenus parlent de ça. Les solutions possibles sont le cannabis, les médicaments et puis la masturbation.
Elle devient souvent presque un rituel sécurisant. La comparaison est bizarre, mais c’est un peu comme les enfants qui prennent leur tétine, toujours au même moment. Et puis, ce qui rassure c’est d’être soi, que ça marche toujours. « Je suis encore un homme. » Il y a le besoin de se dire ça, même seul, même dans 9 m2.
Dans ces cas, la masturbation est de l’ordre de l’addiction. Certains détenus ne peuvent plus s’en passer, même une fois sortis de prison, et même en ayant des rapports avec quelqu’un d’autre.
Ils doivent faire perdurer ce rite qu’ils ont eu pendant dix, quinze ans. Certains détenus récupèrent une sexualité « normale », mais la prison crée parfois aussi des rapports tordus avec les conjoints retrouvés. Il faut repenser l’autre, comme quelqu’un qui a des envies, des désirs potentiellement différents des siens.
C’est en fait la seule sexualité acceptée par l’administration pénitentiaire ?
Oui, et ça crée de la colère chez certains détenus : même dans cette intimité-là, leur sort leur échappe. Quand il y a des films porno qui sont diffusés c’est pareil. Bien sûr, les détenus sont satisfaits. C’est presque un progrès. Mais c’est vraiment comme si on leur disait : « Là, maintenant vous pouvez avoir un moment de sexualité. » C’est terrible.
Comment ces diffusions de films porno se passent-elles ?
Il y a un canal interne de diffusion. La majorité des détenus ont une télé qu’ils louent tous les mois et c’est donc par ce biais-là qu’ils regardent les films diffusés par l’administration pénitentiaire.
Là encore, il n y a pas de règle. Il y a eu une circulaire pour les proscrire, mais personne ne la suit. Dans l’absolu si un directeur permet la diffusion de pas mal de films porno, un nouveau directeur peut changer ça.
Sur ce point-là, encore plus particulièrement, les détenus ont une haine. Ils disent que la pornographie remplace la bromure [un puissant sédatif, ndlr]. Ils disent : « Voilà on nous fout ça pour qu’on se taise, on est des bêtes. » Même eux intériorisent ça, parfois. On calme la bête et on nous fout ça pour qu’on ne se tape pas dessus.
Et il y a quelque chose de terrible parce qu’eux-mêmes se réduisent à ça. C’est comme pour les médicaments, ils critiquent l’usage que l’administration en fait, mais ils les prennent. Et ils sont demandeurs. Et ils vont en redemander plus.
Ce qui est terrible quand on est en prison, c’est qu’on participe activement à notre déshumanisation, à notre bestialité, à notre violence. Les détenus sont actifs au processus de désocialisation.
Certains détenus fondent leurs fantasmes sur leurs souvenirs, mais vous parlez d’une certaine sécheresse de l’imaginaire.
