Parton's albums in the 1990s did not sell as well, but she achieved commercial success again in the new millennium and has released albums on various independent labels since 2000, including her own label, Dolly Records. She has sold more than 100 million records worldwide.
Parton's music includes Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA)-certified gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards. She has had 25 songs reach no. 1 on the Billboard country music charts, a record for a female artist (tied with Reba McEntire). During a performance at the Ryman Auditorium Vince told the story about the time his dad met Dolly, but to understand, you have to listen to what Vince’s dad was like as a kid.
Vince shared that he and his dad religiously watched “The Porter Wagoner Show” every week. Later in life, as Vince’s career grew, he got together with his dad and he said, “hey, dad, let’s sing a Porter Wagoner song.” When his dad said he didn’t know any Porter songs, Vince said, “what are you talking about? We watched that show every week.” His dad replied, “you did. I was watching Dolly.”
In 1995, Dolly asked Vince to re-record “I Will Always Love You” as duet with her for her Something Special album, Vince called his dad to tell him the news. His dad invited himself to the studio and the rest, as they say, is something only Vince can describe.
Of course, the duet version of “I Will Always Love You” is a treasure.
