Doktor Gey
George Otto Gey (/ ɡaɪ / GHY; July 6, 1899 - November 8, 1970) was an American cell biologist at Johns Hopkins Hospital who is credited with propagating the HeLa cell line from Henrietta Lacks ' cervical tumor.
George Otto Gey was a scientist in the US who studied cells and cultivated the first continuous human cell line in 1951. Gey derived the cells for that cell line, called the HeLa cell line, from a woman called Henrietta Lacks, a Black woman who had cervical cancer. Cell lines are a cluster of cells that continuously multiply on their own outside of the organism from which they originated. Gey ...
George and Margaret Gey developed techniques for filming and photographing cell growth within test tubes. Their research produced new developments in organ and cell culture, intracellular and membrane cytology, and in vitro investigations in endocrinology, oncology, and virology.
Dr. Gey Dr. George Otto Gey (1899-1970) was an American cell biologist and tissue culture pioneer best known for his role in establishing the HeLa cell line. He worked at Johns Hopkins University and was the director of the Tissue Culture Laboratory at the Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.
Immortal Cells of Henrietta Lacks (HeLa) Dr. Gey, working with his wife, Margaret, and Mary Kucibek, developed a cell culture medium with the right nutrient mixture allowing the cells to grow and multiply outside an organism. They placed the cervical cancer specimens of Mrs. Lacks into test tubes with the culture medium and rotated the tubes.
George Otto Gey was a pioneer in tissue culture, having introduced the roller drum, the HeLa cell line, and the use of human fetal cord serum and beef embryo extract. During his career (1920s-1960s), the field of tissue culture was in its infancy and not yet dependent upon commercial biological supp …

Dr. George Gey had developed effective and reproducible cell culturing and preservation techniques, and because of George Gey, HeLa cells were being sent all over the world. According to all but one of Skloot's sources, George Otto Gey never met Henrietta and didn't come see her while she was dying.
Dr. Gey was the head of tissue culture research at Johns Hopkins and had been working on establishing a continuous line of human cells for research purposes. Prior to obtaining Henrietta Lacks' cells, he had been unsuccessful in his attempts to establish a human cell line that could survive and proliferate indefinitely in the laboratory.
