An out-of-control dog with “a fetish for chasing cyclists” launched itself at a 6ft 3in ex-police officer, knocking him off his bike before sinking his teeth into his leg.
Brindle mastiff Blue then dragged his 14-stone victim down the road at Callestick, between Truro and Perranporth, in July of last year.
The dog’s owner Johnathan Rogers, 54, appeared at Truro Crown Court for sentence having pleaded guilty to being in charge of a dangerously out-of-control dog and failure to comply with a dog order.
Prosecuting the case, Ramsay Quaife described how Blue got free from Rogers’ property and chased the cyclist before jumping at him, knocking him off his bike, biting him and dragging him along the road.
The retired police officer suffered a nasty puncture wound to the top of his thigh and other injuries relating to the bike fall.
Mr Quaife told the court how, following previous incidents regarding Blue, Rogers was ordered to put up fencing to keep the dog from getting out.

In a statement the victim described how he had seen a lot in his career and was not easily shaken, but the attack had had a profound effect on both him and his wife.
Rogers was also in court last year for setting fire to his ex's belongings after accusing her of sleeping with another man.
Judge Robert Linford decided not to issue a destruction order for Blue as he has now been rehomed and is making progress.
Representing Rogers, Curt Lewis said: “This particular dog has a fetish for chasing cyclists when he sees them on the road. It is not an inherently unpleasant dog – he’s a rather nice dog – he just goes mad when he sees cyclists.”
Sentencing Rogers, Judge Linford said: “In March 2020 a dog order was made in respect of Blue following an earlier offence.
“The requirements were not kept and as a consequence in July the dog escaped, ran down the road after an innocent cyclist, jumped up at him and bit him causing the cyclist to fall from his bike.
“This man was a retired police officer, six foot three and 14 stone. He was shaken up considerable which is an indication of the seriousness of this offence. It could have been worse, particularly if it was a child on a bicycle.”
Judge Linford went on to note Rogers’ positive character, his work ethic and attempts to get on with his life, but said he came incredibly close to a prison sentence.
He was given a 12-month sentence, suspended for two years.
He must also pay £1,000 compensation and £750 court costs. He wasn’t however banned from keeping dogs.
