Why So Many Women Love To Watch Porn
By Dawn Michael — Written on Oct 07, 2021
One of the world’s most popular free sites, Pornhub, which is visited by 156 million people every month, recently revealed that women make up a quarter of its global audience.
So yes, women watch porn, and not only that, but more women than ever are watching porn.
What is even more interesting is the kind of porn women are watching and how they are watching it.
Women enjoy watching porn for many of the same reasons men watch do. They find it sexually exciting and use it as a means to help them fantasize during masturbation.
As a clinical sexologist who's spoken with hundreds of millennial woman, as well as women in their 40s and up, porn meets a diverse range of needs, particularly depending on age and relationship status. There is no one size fits all reason.
Women tend to watch different types of porn than the genres preferred by men.
Much of porn is still made for a male audience, but this is changing as well, with more of a demand for better quality porn as well as more female-driven story plots.
Amanda de Cadenet, a contributing editor to Marie Claire, helped the magazine create a survey about the modern relationship between women and porn.
Among the various findings , she learned that 31% of women stated that they watch porn every week or so, while 10% say they watch porn daily.
Another area where women are more apt to purchase video’s when they are in a relationship is in the sex education category which is making a comeback, produced by The Alexander Institute and various Youtube channels such as Sex Counseling .
When asked the same question about watching with a partner , the results indicate that women watch less porn with a partner than they do by themselves, with 66% saying they never watch with a partner, 31% saying they watch with a partner occasionally, and only 3% saying they never watch together.
Asked if they also watch porn alone, the majority of women polled (88%) watch solo at least sometimes, with only 12% saying they only ever watch porn with a partner.
What is surprising given these results is how little pornography is geared towards a female audience.
I believe that in the years to come we will see an increase in female-produced porn, focusing on women’s fantasies as opposed to men’s fantasies.
The wide availability of access to pornography on the internet has changed the way many women view sex.
In some ways, this is positive, as it allows women to observe sexual situation they think they may want to try and explore further if they believe they do or do not want to act on those fantasies.
There can be negative impacts, however, when women see sexual practices they don't want to participate in and feel as though there's something wrong with them for not wanting to try, such as deep throating, being tied up and spanked, anal sex, and/or gangbangs.
There is a need for more and better sex education that bridges the gap between what is healthy and "normal" as compared to what is highly produced entertainment.
Another issue is that women may want to watch porn that taps into to their own fantasies rather than those that are common among men.
For example, a woman may enjoy watching a scene where the man takes his partner roughly and tells her what to do, but there is a lead up to it an understanding between the two of them (a connection), which differs from a porn video where it may show no relationship at all and the man ordering her to do certain sexual acts on him.
Women enjoy watching porn that can tap into her fantasies rather than his fantasies, as can be seen with the vast amount of sex toys that are available and made specifically for women.
It is clear from the record highs of sex toy sales to women that women are interested in sex and masturbation. They just need material that is made for them.

The subject of porn has been saucing up headlines recently.
On 1 April 2019, new porn laws are being introduced in the UK , which mean X-rated websites will require you to prove your age before you can see them.
The so-called ‘porn block’ is being rolled out nationwide in a bid to stop under 18s seeing inappropriate material.
Meanwhile, a new three-part programme on Channel 4 has thrust (pardon the pun) a group of mums deep (pun totally not intended) into the world of pornography to investigate how easy it is for young people to access and, by the end of the series, produce their own sex film.
Both the mums’ porn documentary and the forthcoming law alteration are both aiming to help change the narrative surrounding porn and that has to be a good thing, because the fact is that people watch porn.
When it comes to viewing the raunchy stuff many of us tend to hold a bit of a gender bias . But recent statistics have revealed it is time to cast aside the view that porn is the domain of man.
The truth is women are just as likely (if not more) to spend a rainy afternoon scrolling erotic sites like Redtube.
A recent study by Marie Claire found that as many as one in three (31%) women watch porn every week, while Pornhub , o ne of the world’s most popular free sites, recently revealed that women make up more than a quarter (29%) of its global audience.
So what’s impacting the female porn-love?
Jenny Page, relationship expert at dating site IllicitEncounters.com, believes it isn’t so much that more women are watching porn, just that they’re no longer embarrassed to admit to it.
“Women have always enjoyed watching porn,” she explains. “The difference these days is they are more prepared to admit that they are doing it, as we all get a bit more honest and grown-up about sex . That has to be a good thing.”
But while female porn watchers all have their individual boat-floating fancies, there are a few common threads when it comes to women and the world of pornography.
A survey by Marie Claire about the modern relationship between women and porn found that women watch less porn with a partner with 66 percent saying they ‘never’ watch with their other half.
Less than a third 31%) said they occasionally watched with a partner while just 3% said they regularly watched with the person they were sleeping with.
Further research from Woo Woo revealed that a quarter of British women confess to watching porn alone behind their partner’s back
“Your relationship to porn is mostly about you – your sexuality, unencumbered by a partner,” the study’s author, Amanda de Cadenet, said about her findings. “Most of our respondents, at least, are using porn to find what they want, and to figure out how to please themselves.”
“There is no doubt that a sizeable number of women who enjoy porn do so on their own to enhance masturbation,” adds Jenny Page.
But those who do like to watch with their other half are increasingly doing so to get them in the mood for sex.
“Research from IllicitEncounters.com found that increasing numbers of women were watching porn with their partners as a form of foreplay,” Jenny says. “The research showed that 40% of the time, it is the woman who initiates this step. That is good news: more women taking the lead in the bedroom.”
Surprising, but true. The same research from Pornhub found that women, on average, spend 1:14 more minutes a day on the site than their male counterparts .
Jenny Page said: “Yes women spend longer watching porn than men – and there is strong scientific support for this fact. The reason is obvious: it takes longer for women to climax when masturbating or having sex.”
According to their recent survey Pornhub’s Lesbian category is the leading favourite among women, with Gay (male) following close at second place.
The search term ‘lesbian’ also emerged as the most searched for term by women. But women are also into multi-partner scenarios with terms ‘threesome’ coming in hot at number 2 and ‘gangbang’ in at 4th place.
Though majority of women in the Marie Claire survey sought out porn online, 40 percent said they used erotic stories, and six percent said they used audio porn .
“Erotic audio books and podcasts are becoming more popular,” explains Jenny Page. “This has to be a positive trend. You can listen to the action and then let your imagination roam freely. It is a wonderful way to enhance masturbation.”
According to recent research by Pornhub women are twice as likely to watch ‘Romantic’ themed X-rated videos.
“There is evidence to suggest that women seek more a story narrative when enjoying porn – they like to see a couple form some kind of relationship before having sex whereas men are more action orientated,” Jenny explains.
“This trend is reflected in the huge popularity of erotic books largely aimed at women such as Fifty Shades of Grey. That was all about the gradual seduction and corruption of student Anastasia Steele by her older male lover Christian Grey.”
Fifty-one percent of respondents in the Marie Claire survey believe that porn had taught them about sex , while 29 percent said it made them feel sexy.
What’s more women are yearning to put the moves they’ve picked up on screen into RL scenarios with 12% of British women longing to make a porn film with their partner, a poll by Woo Woo revealed.
“There is no doubt that porn users tend to be more adventurous in the bedroom,” Jenny Page says. “They see moves on screen and try to replicate them in the bedroom”

Q: Am I the only woman in the world who likes watching porn with her husband? My friends say they think it's disgusting, but I find it keeps me focused during sex instead of thinking about my to-do list.
— Sheila in Illinois

A: Although the man in your life might prefer to believe that the only to-do in your head during sex is him, that's not always the case. Busy women, even when we're getting busy, have active minds. If it took men as long to reach orgasm as it does women (on average 20 minutes), their minds might wander too.

That's why I like your style, Sheila from Illinois. You figured out what you need in the bedroom (a television), and you made it happen. So what if your turn-on has to be turned on? At least you and your husband are enjoying porn together. I think that's very enlightened and cool, and I think your friends, frankly, are not. Who are these women to say what's disgusting? I'll tell you who they are: They are classic pornophobes. I know this because I, Cindy Chupack, used to be slightly pornophobic myself. I thought porn was something a man watched alone in a dark room and then stashed away so his girlfriend wouldn't find it. And then, if she did find—and maybe even watched—it, she would have to decide for herself if she could love a guy who enjoys 12 hours of The Blow Job Adventures of Dr. Fellatio . For example.

Okay, I admit it. Until Sheila challenged my thinking, I'd only watched porn surreptitiously, in the name of research. (You know; meet his parents, meet his pals, meet his porn.) But most women I recently asked admitted to watching porn with a boyfriend or husband. I began to wonder if I should be writing Sheila for advice rather than the other way around. For starters I'd ask: How does a modern, respectable woman get porn?

My friends scoffed when I mentioned going to an adult video store. They recommended On Demand, a pay-per-view service. One benefit of this service is that it vanishes on demand as well, so you never have to worry about what to do with your videos should you die in a horrible accident. While I admired the ease of On Demand, I felt this column required me to purchase actual pornography. I brought this up with another friend and her husband, and she admitted (much to his dismay—he thought it was none of my business) that they, too, enjoy porn together, and when I asked where she gets hers, she whispered, "Blowfish.com."

Blowfish.com turns out to be as user-friendly as Amazon.com. In addition to extensive privacy policies, it features enthusiastic, well-written reviews and a whole section of couples videos. I picked one to watch with my husband that had won so many awards it was like the Schindler's List of porn (best film, best director, best screenplay, best couples sex scene, best group sex scene, and my personal favorite, best non-sex performance, which I imagine is reserved for pool boys who simply clean the pool). I figured it had to be good.

And it was. Not the film but the...experiment, which I did for you people, because I'm that dedicated to getting you answers. My husband and I agreed that the award-winning plot and acting left something to be desired, but despite that, desire is what it eventually inspired. So if, like me, you've been pornophobic in the past, here's a to-do: Try this with someone you love and trust. You might be aghast, aroused, or amused, but at least you'll be those things together. And isn't that what intimacy is all about?
