The Band Toto Asia
Toto expanded its production facilities overseas, and doing business in France and Germany, Indonesia, Korea and Taiwan, Thailand and the People's Republic of China. The company believed that North America as a growth market for Washlet's bidets and toilets, as opposed to its "base" markets of Japan and China.
Dhaniram Toto was documenting Toto words to ensure that the future generations could comprehend them. However, many words were being replaced by foreign words, such as dui, which is Bengali for verandah.
Origins
The company was founded in 1917 and its beginnings mirrored Japan's development. In the beginning of its existence, the company manufactured products to meet the demand for new, modern urban housing. It was the first tunnel kiln in the country to continuously produce ceramics. It also pioneered the use of automation to control production, allowing for more efficiency and consistency.
In the late 1980s the company began expanding overseas to profit from sales and new markets. It established the Cera Trading Company, importing and selling other manufacturers' products to complement its own lines of sanitary earthenware and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and expanded the firm’s global market share.
In the 1990s Toto began to concentrate on research and development for water-related appliances. It also upgraded its distribution system to better serve the needs of its customers and increase profits. The company adopted a just-in-time approach to supply chain management and applied the same approach in its sales strategy. This resulted in a greater level of satisfaction with the customer.
Toto continued to innovate toilet technology. Its latest toilet, for instance it has an extremely powerful tornado flush that is more eco friendly than traditional toilets. Toto uses recycled water in its manufacturing process and also has a green purchasing policy. Toto also produces faucets, bathtubs and hand dryers with higher energy efficiency than conventional models.
The first museum of the company was opened in 2015 and features exhibits on Toto's seminal products and their development and its group companies (all related to ceramics), history of plumbing and products such as bath units and, in a different gallery, Toto products sold around the world. The museum has a bathroom with a washbasin and other toilet innovations.
Before forming Toto members of the group did sessions with various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all performed on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
You might expect a band with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock group however, it's actually a pretty straightforward rock band. The band began as four-piece, and released two albums in 1979, the self-titled debut album and 1980's Armed to the Teeth. The band has a varied musical background, but their biggest success came in 1982 with Toto IV.
The album was a huge blockbuster but not without its problems. The record companies placed Toto under pressure to release a hit single or they would drop the album. Toto was able to achieve this with the help from the smash hit "Africa."
Toto's musical mastery is the result of their prior experience. Before joining the group, members worked as session musicians for artists like Boz Scaggs. Steely Dan and Seals and Crofts. Their sonic trademark has become the standard for the '80s, and has influenced many contemporary artists.
The album starts out hard with tracks like Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR songs that slowly sink into your head. This song blends folk and distortion AOR that could sound completely wrong but actually works very well.
After Toto IV The band's fortunes turned towards the negative. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band went through numerous drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball left the band following drug-related charges. The band remained with Michael Porcaro, Steve Lukather and Michael Porcaro.
Toto released Isolation despite the turbulence. It wasn't as well-liked as IV. However, the band still was able to release a chart-topping album in the year 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. The album marked the end of the original Toto lineup and was the first album featuring the new singer, Simon Phillips.

Steve Lukather has forged a rich, deep friendship with Joe Williams that is flourishing professionally around the world. Line-up
The album's third, Turn Back, marked the return to the traditional sextet arrangement of the previous albums. It was a more powerful, consistent effort that had an edge that was stronger than Hydra. Its more punk-rock sound was a reflection of the maturation of the group and featured drummer Bobby Kimball's greater virtuosity on drums, and a more confident, mature vocal delivery by singer Joseph Williams. David Paich's keyboard skills were also more sophisticated, sharper and less akin to previous recordings.
After touring to promote the album, the group recorded a live show in Amsterdam which was released as a two-CD set titled Falling In Between Live on Eagle Records. The studio album came out shortly after, and the band embarked on an extensive world tour in support of it. In this time, keyboardist Greg Phillinganes filled in for Paich, and bassist David Hungate left the group to spend more time with his family.
In 1998, Paich & Lukather began searching through old tapes & demos to discover songs that had never been recorded prior to. The album was released in 2001 as a duo album titled Then & Now. It was the first album by the band without a single song titled "A". The album also included a previously unreleased track titled "Kari-Anne".
By 2003, Toto had begun to decline in popularity. The fourth album, Old Is New, was a commercial failure and vocalist Williams was suffering from a severe laryngitis infection which hampered his singing. In addition, Hungate returned to Nashville as a drummer, and Leland Sklar was replaced by Shem von Schroeck.
Downes, Wetton Palmer and Howe, the founding members of Asia, met in England in the beginning of 2006 to discuss the possibility that the band could be revived. This lineup, minus Howe (who was a member of Yes at the time), eventually became known as Toto XIV and toured extensively.
In 2010, the band reunited for another reunion tour with a slightly different line-up, including guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather, drummer John Pierce, bassist Shannon Forrest, and multi-instrumentalists Warren Ham and Dominique Taplin. The band also featured an appearance by singer Michael McDonald, and a backing singer named Mabvuto Carpenter.
