D.Va is a Tank hero in Overwatch .

D.Va’s mech, Tokki is nimble and powerful — its twin Fusion Cannons blast away with autofire at short range, and she can use its Boosters to barrel over enemies and obstacles, or absorb attacks with her projectile-dismantling Defense Matrix.

Self-Destruct detonates, or if D.Va is

D.Va is a unique tank with some mobility. With very high health and Boosters, she can close a gap to the enemy with ease. She has high damage output at close-range, making her a strong fighter in a 1-on-1 match. Her Defense Matrix is useful against all incoming projectiles, protecting her teammates from enemy fire. The Micro Missiles deal high amount of damage when used in close range. She is a dangerous ganker in tank class, dealing consistent damage to the enemy. Self-Destruct will wipe all opponents within the blast area. However, she doesn't have an extended barrier to properly protect her team like Reinhardt. She is also slow while firing, allowing the enemy to outrun her to disengage or move around her to distract her aiming. Both Fusion Cannons and Micro Missiles are ineffective against anything further than medium-range, meaning she can be outranged by the enemy before she even has a chance to close a gap with Boosters.

D.Va is a former professional gamer who now uses her skills to pilot a state-of-the-art mech in defense of her homeland . [2] She is a very competitive individual, [3] and coupled with her pro-gamer skills, this makes her an extremely effective mech pilot. Never backing down,
D.Va always plays to win. [4] While she projects a carefree, irreverant attitude, D.Va is burdened by the emotional cost of defending her homeland, and the facade the South Korean media projects on her.

In addition to skills as a mech pilot, D.Va is also a competent mechanic. [5]

Hana Song grew up playing classic games with her father, himself a former professional gamer during his younger years. [6] He was the one that introduced her to StarCraft , and her undeniable skill helped lay the foundation for her eventual e-sports victories in other games. [7]

Song has been friends with Dae-hyun since childhood. They would stay up late working on his hoverbike . Hana took part in a race with it and won, albiet at the cost of the bike and nearly her own life. [5]

Like her father before her, Song became a pro-gamer. [8] She became a Mecha Guardian V player in high school, quickly ascending to the #1 rank, winning the world championship [5] , surpassing her teammate Yuna Lee [6] [9] and rival Kyung-soo Hann . [6] A fierce competitor, Song played to win at any cost, and gained a well-earned reputation for showing no mercy to her opponents. [2]

At home, however, not all was well, as MEKA struggled to maintain its defense against the Gwishin omnics that repeatedly attacked the nation. As the omnics continued to adapt, they eventually disrupted MEKA's drone-control networks, forcing the military to place pilots in the mechs. Scrambling to find suitable candidates, the government turned to the country's professional gamers, who possessed the necessary reflexes and instincts to operate the mechs' advanced weapons systems, [2] in addition to standouts from other fields that required similar talents. Top stars were drafted, including the 19-year-old Song, [3] along with Lee and Kyung-soo. [9] [6] She saw the new mission as a game, [2] and an evolution of her own career. Without fear or hesitation, she abandoned the limelight of her pro-gamer career, and got an armored mech operator's licence. As a member of MEKA, she could put her reflexes to the ultimate test on a real battlefield, instead of a digital one. [3] Her skills and intense competitive spirit made her an extremely effective pilot. [4]

Song now fearlessly charges into battle alongside the rest of her MEKA unit, ready to spring to her nation's defense at a moment's notice. Recently, she has begun to stream combat operations to her adoring fans, and her growing following has turned her into a global icon. [2] Sponsorship deals and her fanbase provided her with the means to customize her mech, [10] such as Nano Cola . [5]

At some point she also played one of the leading roles in the movie Hero of My Storm . [11] [12]

As an active member of the military, Song was no longer able to freely travel as she could've as a civilian. She became an avid reader of Mei's Adventures, the publicly-posted travel journal of climatologist Mei-Ling Zhou , fascinated with all the different places Mei has seen. [13]

As time went on, the cost of defending South Korea from the Gwishin began to take its toll on Song. In one battle in Busan during a thunder storm, the squad barely managed to defeat the omnics, but the other mechs were put out of commision due to serious damage and their pilots sustained some injuries; only Song came out of it relatively unscathed. While the rest of the squad went on leave and the media reporting that Song was celebrating the victory by schmoozing with celebrities, Song had actually chosen to remain on active duty and spent time over the next week fixing and fine-tuning her mech alongside Dae-hyun, who had also joined MEKA as her assigned mechanic. As she stated that the squad and the rest of Busan were counting on her to keep the city safe, and any mistakes on her part could cost them everything, Dae-hyun recognized the emotional weight Song was carrying. He tried to convince her that she needed a break and that it was okay to ask for help, not needing to bear it alone, but she assured him that she had things under control.

That didn't last long however, as five Gwishin omnics returned to attack Busan—while previous attacks were spaced between months, this one was just one week, which left the pair the only ones present to defend against the omnics. Song launched her mech to engage them. She took out two of the Gwishin, but the remaining three outmaneuvered her, damaging her mech and destroying one of the fusion cannons. Dae-hyun told her to get to cover and wait for reinforcements, but Song stated that they wouldn't get there in time. Performing a 180 on the pursuing omnics, she managed to destroy two of them, while the last Gwishin broke off and headed for Busan. Song pursued it, but it avoided her weapons fire and micro missile barrage before turning around and entangled her mech, tearing off the other cannon when she tried to fire on it. Left without any weapons, all her status readouts in the redline, and the city still in danger, she realized she could do nothing else and asked for her friend's help.

With Dae-hyun going over the mech's status, on the mention of the reactor becoming unstable Song remembered their earlier conversation of the destruction of his hovercycle, and suggested purposely overloading the mech's reactor. After some protest, Dae-hyun obliged, and as Song distracted the omnic to buy him some time he successfully triggered an overload that would destroy the reactor in sixty seconds. The omnic would reach Busan before that however, so Song ejected from the mech and used her light gun to shoot the exposed reactor from afar, destroying both the mech and the omnic. She fell into the sea, where she was recovered by a search-and-rescue team and taken for medical treatment, Dae-hyun accompanying her.

South Korean media later made an update on the attack, reporting that authorities had stated that she had emerged without a scratch. In reality, she came out of the ordeal with a broken leg and arm, along with other more minor injuries. That didn't stop her from using her time off by assisting Dae-hyun with assembling her new mech. She thanked him for being there for her when she'd needed him. [5]

D.Va was first announced through the official PlayOverwatch Twitter account, which linked to a mock-up page on the official StarCraft II World Championship site. [19] [20] She had previously been depicted in posters in the attacking team's starting area in Hanamura . Her StarCraft page was later taken down and the link instead redirects to the StarCraft II home page.

The StarCraft WCS web page first introduced D.Va as a former professional StarCraft player. Michael Chu later clarified on February 1, 2018 that this was not intended to be canon and was just a fun way to tease the character. He also explained that the unnamed game that she was best known for in her career was one that best matched the skills needed to pilot her mech. [21]

D.Va's design and kit seems to take inspiration from Brit , one of the hero concepts created for the Overwatch pitch meeting.

Developer Comment: These buffs are aimed at making D.Va feel more fluid and responsive to play.

Developer Comment: The lower cooldown on her mobility will enable D.Va to more readily swap between playing offensively and defensively.

Developer Comment: With role locks in place there is some room to improve D.Va’s impact as a tank, so we’re partially reverting a previous change which increased Defense Matrix’s cooldown.

Developer Comment: This change will allow D.Va to absorb more damage over time, while still keeping the maximum duration she can absorb at one time the same.

Developer Comment: This change is just meant to counteract the global increase in ultimate cost. The time it takes to generate a D.Va’s ultimate when out of her mech should remain the same as it was before this update.

Developer Comments: Defense Matrix is a very powerful defensive ability and can often feel oppressive from far away. Reducing the range on it will require D.Va to position herself more carefully to take advantage of its effects.

Developer Comments: Knockbacks are now less affected by how the enemy was moving when they were hit. Instead of having small or large knockbacks that depend on chance, knockbacks will feel similar regardless of the enemy’s movement leading up to the knockback. Allowing flying heroes, like Mercy when using her Valkyrie ability or D.Va using her Booster ability, to be properly knocked back makes for more fluid, realistic gameplay.

Developer Comments: This change allows D.Va’s enemies to play around her Defense Matrix by increasing its downtime between uses.

Developer Comments: D.Va’s burst potential is a bit too high, so we’re reducing the damage of her Micro Missiles and Boosters impact. Prior to this change, each missile dealt 3 impact damage and 6 explosive damage. We’re reducing explosive damage from 6 to 4 but leaving the impact damage the same, the net result being 21% damage reduction.

Developer Comment: D.Va’s Defense Matrix uptime has proven to be too strong, but simply reducing it without making other changes would make her too weak (and far less interesting to play). Instead, we’re adding a new ability and giving her the ability to fire while flying. These changes give D.Va new options while maintaining Defense Matrix’s ability to shut down big enemy attacks.

Defense Matrix
Enemy shots no longer need to travel a minimum distance before they can be blocked
Developer Comment: Previously, there was a minimum distance a projectile had to travel before it could be destroyed by Defense Matrix. This made it nearly worthless in situations where an enemy was right next to your teammate, such as when Roadhog hooks your ally. This change removes that restriction so Defense Matrix should now reliably destroy projectiles regardless of how far they have traveled.

Developer Comment: D.Va’s armor often made her feel like she had no weaknesses, even against heroes that are typically effective against bigger targets (like Reaper). The changes to her primary fire will result in a small overall decrease in damage, but her Fusion Cannons should feel more consistent now.

Developer Comment: We reduced the cost of the Call Mech ultimate ability to compensate for the increased ultimate cost across all heroes (detailed above). D.Va players shouldn’t experience a noticeable change. The rest of these changes help D.Va’s withstand attacks, which will allow her to keep pressuring enemies.

Developer Comment: Defense Matrix was too efficient when tapped repeatedly, instead of being held. Now, the recovery delay matches the ability cooldown.

Developer Comment: D.Va isn't being selected as often as our other tanks, and we feel a lot of that stems from the underperformance of her damage absorption abilities. So, we've reconfigured her Defensive Matrix, making it more flexible and giving players the ability to use it more often. We’ve also given Self-Destruct a little more oomph, because it felt slightly underwhelming when compared to many of Overwatch's other ultimate abilities.

D.Va is a fictional player character who appears in the 2016 video game Overwatch —a first-person shooter developed by Blizzard Entertainment —and related animations and literary media. She also appears as a playable character in the crossover MOBA game Heroes of the Storm , and as a gameplay announcer in StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void . In the English media, she is voiced by Charlet Chung .

In Overwatch lore, D.Va is a pro eSports gamer named Hana Song ( Revised Romanization : Song Ha-na ) ( 송하나 ) from Busan , South Korea . Within the Overwatch narrative, she and other gamers were recruited by the Korean government's Mobile Exo-Force of the Korean Army (MEKA) to help quell the robotic Omnic uprising, translating their video-game-playing skills over into controlling weaponized mech suits . Within the game, D.Va is a Tank character, able to deal a stream of damage and nullify incoming attacks for a short time. If D.Va's suit is destroyed, she can eject from it and stay alive long enough to call in a new suit. Her ultimate ability allows her to self-detonate her suit, dealing heavy damage to all enemies in line of sight, sufficient to eliminate most characters in one blow.

D.Va has been well received by critics and players, and she has been seen as a positive female model for younger gamers.

D.Va was first announced in October 2015 at BlizzCon ; along with Genji and Mei , she was one of the last heroes introduced into Overwatch prior to its official release. [2] [3] Voice actress Charlet Chung provides both the English voice for D.Va, as well as her Korean dialogue. [1] D.Va is designed as a tank character who uses a pink exoskeletal mech suit in battle. [3] Mobile for a tank character, D.Va was also designed as "skirmisher." [4]

One of Overwatch ' s initial hero concepts was that of a piloted mech, with both the mech itself and the pilot on foot being part of the hero's skill kit; they ultimately settled on the pilot ejecting the mech at critical damage and fighting outside, unprotected. D.Va and the mech were designed by artist Arnold Tsang borrowing from anime and manga references. Initially, they had a cat-based theme around the various stickers and artwork on the mech itself, but later changed this to a bunny, as they thought the short-range booster rockets made it look like the mech was bunny-hopping. [5]

Soon after the game's release, D.Va was noted for having a low damage output; the game's principal designer, Geoff Goodman confirmed that "D.Va's damage is definitely on the lower side, much like Winston's . They are this way for a similar reason: They are both very mobile and hard to kill." [6] D.Va was also noted to take more damage than other tank characters when facing multiple opponents in the game due to her lack of a shield. [6] Goodman attributed this along with her low damage output to the character balancing developed into Overwatch developers, stating, "every character in the game has strengths and weaknesses, it's part of what makes the teamplay work well." [7] Goodman revealed that early in her development, D.Va was able to deal more damage, but that this damage output was lowered because "the way that played out is that she would fly into someone's face, destroy them, and fly away. There was little that person could do because [of] her mobility." [7] Despite agreeing with feedback calling D.Va underpowered, Goodman expressed that improvements to the character "are unlikely to take the shape of increasing her damage output significantly," adding that "the goal is that she should be a viable aggressive initiation tank, much like Winston can be." [8] The discussion of buffing D.Va came at the same time as a discussion on nerfing the character McCree, who had been noted to eliminate tank characters too quickly; game director Jeff Kaplan explained that D.Va's buffs would take longer to develop and implement. [9] Kaplan did however detail that the development team would be exploring improvements to her damage output and survivability, although would only "probably pick one direction or the other." [9] Eventually, her ultimate ability was buffed, with the cost and explosion delay being reduced, in addition to the removal of the possibility for the activating player to be killed by their own ultimate ability. [10] Her "Defense Matrix" ability was also changed to be toggled on and off at will with a resource meter, rather than being a single-use ability with a cooldown. [10]

In August 2017, in response to their observations of the meta-game, Blizzard planned to introduce changes to D.Va to be tested in the Public Test Realm (PTR) server and evaluated before full release. [11] Namely, the developers found that D.Va was being used more frequently to soak up damage through her Defense Matrix and was not being played offensively. [11] The revamped skill kit would increase the rate of energy depletion of the Defense Matrix, effectively reducing its use time by half, but would allow her to use her main weapon while boosting. [11] The update also added a new Micro Missiles ability that launches a number of small missiles that do damage in a small area on impact. Kaplan said that the overall goal of D.Va's ability retooling was to "reduce her reliance on Defense Matrix and make her more fun to play," and stressed the changes were not meant to nerf D.Va overall. [11] These changes were added for all players in a September 2017 patch. [12]

Blizzard considers D.Va the most difficult character that they must develop around when adding new game modes or other features; as described by assistant director Aaron Keller, "she breaks everything" due to having two different forms that they must account for. [13]

D.Va possesses a tank role in Overwatch ; she is suited in her mech which is equipped with twin Fusion Cannons that do not need reloading. [14] The Fusion Cannons deal substantial damage at close range, but consequentially slow her mobility. [14] D.Va also comes equipped with Boosters and a Defense Matrix; the Boosters quickly move her in the direction that the player's reticle is facing, potentially allowing for short periods of flight, and additionally lightly damaging and knocking back enemies that come in contact with her while boosting. [15] D.Va's Defense Matrix absorbs incoming enemy projectiles heading toward her. [14] She can also fire a volley of Micro-Missiles that have a small area of splash damage upon impact. [12]

Once her mech suit runs out of hitpoints (HP), D.Va ejects out of it, equipped with only a Light Gun. Though more vulnerable while outside the mech, she is a considerably smaller and more maneuverable target in this state. [15] D.Va can also eject out of her mech suit as part of her Self Destruct ultimate ability, which causes her mech suit to explode and deal massive area of effect damage shortly after ejection. [14] [15] Once the mech explodes, D.Va can use her second ultimate ability, Call Mech, which simply allows her to resuit into her mech. This can be done immediately after using the Self Destruct ability, but otherwise has a cooldown period that can be sped up by damaging opponents while on foot. [14]

In Overwatch lore, D.Va is Hana Song, a 19-year old former professional gamer going by her gamertag "D.Va". D.Va was known for becoming the No. 1 ranked StarCraft II player in the world at age 16, and maintaining an undefeated record prior to her retirement from gaming in order to defend her homeland. [2] [16] During the in-universe Omnic Crisis event, an omnic monster rose from the East China Sea , destroying coastal cities including those in South Korea and its neighbors. [16] The South Korean government developed the Mobile Exo-Force of the Korean Army (MEKA), a mobile armored drone unit to combat the omnic monster, although each battle resulted in a stalemate. The omnic continued to adapt to the MEKA's drone networks, turning them against the Koreans. [17] The South Korean government struggled with finding pilots for new mechs, eventually turned to the country's professional gamers, thought to have necessary reflexes and instincts to effectively operate the mech suits' advanced weaponry. [16] [18] Based in Busan , D.Va was one of the pro gamers drafted by South Korea's government. Known for being fearless in combat against the omnics, she would develop a global following as she began live streaming her combat encounters. [16] [18] Within MEKA, D.Va is supported by Dae-hyun, a mechanic and D.Va's childhood friend, and takes orders from Myung, the MEKA's commanding officer. [5]

D.Va's story is the focus of the animated short "Shooting Star", released in August 2018, coinciding with a new control map based on Busan. The short shows the origin of D.Va's Self-Destruct ability, being forced to use it to fend off a wave of attacking Omnics to protect Busan. [19] [20]

In May 2017, as part of the version 2.0 update, D.Va was added to the roster of playable heroes for the Blizzard's crossover MOBA game Heroes of the Storm . [21] Additionally, those who played Heroes of the Storm during the "Nexus Challenge 2.0" – Heroes ' version 2.0 launch event – received cosmetics for D.Va's character in Overwatch . [22] D.va made her first appearance for Heroes of the Storm in the Hanamura Showdown, a non-canon cinematic trailer for Heroes 2.0 update, in April 2017. [23] She was the fifth Overwatch character added to that game. [24]

As Overwatch lore heralds her as a world champion StarCraft II player, D.Va was added as a gameplay announcer for StarCraft II: Legacy of the Void , originally as part of a gift bundle, including announcer and player portrait features for attendees of BlizzCon 2016 . [25]

D.Va has been positively received by the game's community. Kotaku reported that the game's fan base created a meme of the character; the meme, dubbed "Gremlin D.Va" often features chibi-like fan art of the character, in which D.Va is portrayed as a "cherubic" version of herself indulging in gamer stereotypes, such as eating Doritos and drinking Mountain Dew . [26] An August 2016 Overwatch patch included a new emote for D.Va in which she sits in her mech playing a shoot 'em up game while eating chips and drinking a soft drink, alluding to the Gremlin D.Va meme. [27] Lead hero designer Geoff Goodman stated, "we love Gremlin D.Va," when speaking on Blizzard's favorite fan interpretation of characters. [28]

In terms of critical reception, Tech Insider ' s Steve Kovach called D.Va his favorite character. [29] Kotaku 's Kirk Hamilton positively received the buff she received in July 2016, writing that it "transformed her into the high-flying terror I’ve always wanted her to be." [30]

In South Korea, D.Va has been used as a representative of the National D.Va Association, later renamed as FAMERZ—a group of South Korean Overwatch players that support women's and LGBTQ rights —which was formed to protest against former South Korean President Park Geun-hye . [31] They chose D.Va to represent them, both due to her South Korean nationality, as well as in light of cheating accusations laid against Geguri , a teenage female Overwatch player that Blizzard cleared. [31] With D.Va highlighting that women can be equally good at video games as males, due to her in-universe professional eSports player status, the group uses both images of D.Va and her pink bunny logo as part of their demonstration material. [31] Some of this demonstration material appeared during international coverage of the 2017 Women's March in January 2017. [31] Some of the cosmetic skins for D.Va have been criticized by FAMERZ, specifically her "Academy" skin based on a Japanese school uniform that represented D.Va's period in school, and the "Black Cat" skin that was based on maid café outfits. Both outfits sexualize the character and projected too much male desire onto a character that otherwise well-represented women in Korea, according to FAMERZ. The group also expressed concern that the skins were based on Japanese-style outfits, and with them, appeared to make D.Va representative of all Asian women, instead of celebrating the Korean facets of D.Va's background only.
