Why was the thesis/ dissertation grading system changed in Fall 2008? The post-Fall 2008 system provides timely information to students regarding their research progress and eliminates problems associated with failure to replace 'R' grades with acceptable letter grades in a timely manner .
A dissertation requires the student to be able to work without having big due dates like assignments and no grades being earned . See the difference!! Once the dissertation has begun, NO GRADES are earned! For some learners, this is a real challenge and because they are not seeing their work receiving a grade it becomes discouraging .
Guessing Your Dissertation Grade ! Most universities provide a copy of their grading scheme and a good student will be able to estimate their grade having reference to this . The following is a rough guide as to the characteristics of each grade band (the actual percentages will depend on your university grading system):
When a thesis or dissertation has been submitted to the Graduate School as approved, the grade is automatically changed to S . If a thesis or dissertation is found unacceptable and the student is dismissed from the program, the grade of U is automatically assigned upon receipt by the Graduate School of the action dismissing the student .
If your course involves a dissertation , the mark that you achieve for this will also impact your final masters degree grade . Often, to achieve a certain classification, you are required to achieve that mark as minimum on your dissertation , for example, for a merit, your dissertation needs to score 60 or above, and for a distinction, 70 or above .
However there are exceptions; for example in Scotland an Honours degree is 4 years not 3 and in many universities outside of the UK, the Honours element is only awarded if a sufficiently high overall grade point average (GPA) is attained, i .e . it's simply an academic distinction as opposed to being linked to the thesis/ dissertation element .
To receive a certain overall grade , student may have to receive a corresponding dissertation grade . For example, students on track to receive a Pass may be required to achieve the minimum grade for a Pass (50%) in their dissertation . Similarly, students may need to gain at least a 60% score in their dissertation for a Merit, and at least a 70% . . .
