With an all-star cast and beautiful cinematography, this re-telling of Beauty and the Beast kept me enthralled from the first scene. Something that was never really explored in the original movie - how the village and the villagers were cursed, too - was finally explained in this adaptation, and it melds so seamlessly together that it's actually believable. Emma Watson was the PERFECT casting choice for Belle, and Luke Evans as Gaston just makes sense. I watch it all the time with my kids, and legitimately had Evermore stuck in my head for two weeks straight, on loop.

Without the Beast transforming from an impatient (expletive) into a caring compassionate person, there is no character growth here. The Beast was horrifying in the original! I was awed by him as a child. This new interpretation is sulky and depressive as opposed to short-tempered and "Beastly". This has the unfortunate side-effect of making the enchantress appear randomly villainous as opposed to teaching the Beast a very serious lesson about life as she did in the original. It was meaningful. Competent, handsome Maurice engenders no sympathy and is a useless character without his technical ingenuity. (Belle is the tinkerer this time around. Dad is just kind of there.) Animated Maurice demonstrated the selflessness of a Father's love many times; something his live-action counterpart lacks as he blunders his way through each scene. Belle was brave, intellectual, and independent in the original. The new film's feminist turbo-charged version is literally cringey. She doesn't even need the Beast (or any man for that matter) but falls in love with him anyway? What a strange dichotomy. Emma Watson can't sing for (expletive) compared to Paige O'Hara. I guess they wanted an ardent feminist (who incidentally has had everything handed to her since she was a child) for the role no matter the cost. Watson herself admitted that she would not have accepted the role unless this version of the film was a "feminist re-imagining". They should have cast Anne Hathaway--who can actually sing--instead. She'd have made a much more convincing Belle than Watson's selfish, pouty, and indignant performance. Animated Belle's sacrifice is cheapened in this re-do when the Beast suggests that Belle take her father's place instead of Belle demonstrating her love and devotion towards her father. In the original Disney film, Gaston visibly changes from a doofy pig (literally! remember the wedding / mud scene?) to an obsessed psychopath, an interesting character arc as opposed to the new film's bland interpretation. Luke Evans' singing falls miserably short of the booming, "center-of-the-chest" vocal-power that Richard White demonstrated in the animated classic. The overtly apparent anti-gun propaganda intertwined with the character is obnoxious as well. Gaston was an agile hunter in the animated original, wherein the character is introduced as he shoots a duck out of the sky demonstrating his marksmanship and preferred past-time. However, by the end of the (original) film, Gaston is physically grappling with the Beast armed with a dagger, and a bow and arrow. The lesson in this re-imagining is: use guns and you will die. Ewan McGregor's French accent is simply horrible. The legs of his candelabra character in the new film are awkward as well. He humorously clunked around in the original take and the animators excellently conveyed a sense of motion and even dance animating just his round candle base. The new film's interpretation is not nearly as roguish, salacious, or irreverent as original Jerry Orbach's Lumière. The politically charged pro-transgender moment during the castle battle in the new film was so "on the nose" that it vies for "top cringe moment" against many others in the film. The humorous original take where the grey-bearded, pre-revolution era Frenchman was aghast to have been dressed up as Ariel (a fun Little Mermaid Easter Egg) by enchanted dresser, brush, and comb was charming and inoffensive to any rational human being. There is a moment in this new film when the rabid mob is stoking their thirst for the Beast's blood, and the only black person in the crowd looks around in bewilderment and disgust at the "lynch mob", very subtle Disney... The director, Bill Condon, couldn't direct his actors to save his life, they seem to have the same emotional dynamic range as Daisy Ridley's character in the new Star Wars. Bill made sure to announce to the world that LeFou would be gay in this interpretation. Without this proud proclamation, Josh Gad's performance was ambiguous enough that the viewer would have been able to draw their own conclusions; Bill decided to lay his stamp on the character and spell it out for us. I have read many articles that adamantly declare "LeFou was always gay". Those individuals must not have noticed LeFou ogling with limp tongue at the blonde triplets' breasts as they are singing at the water pump during the opening song "Belle" in the first film. The enchanted mirror is simply a mirror instead of the crackling green lightning and glow of the original that emits a "lightsaberesque" hum as Gaston wildly flails it around at the crowd. This results in a magical artifact that doesn't feel quite as mystical in the new version. I could go on and on but I'd probably be slammed as a racist and a homophobe. (Bill Condon, Luke Evans, and Ian McKellen are all openly gay.) Watch the two films and decide for yourself which you prefer. The modern humor and colloquialisms shoe-horned into the new film break immersion and make the film feel fake. Such as: "We are so not in a good place right now". Right... That's an expression a pre-revolution era Frenchman would use... Ian McKellen gives an acceptable performance as Cogsworth even though it is oceans apart from the comic relief provided by David Ogden Stiers' performance in the original version. I believe the director was attempting to be funny when he portrayed McKellen's moustache as crooked (like the hands of a clock?) at the end of the film, but Ian just looked weird. There was also a strange theme wherein McKellen's Cogsworth is repulsed by his wife--after being returned to human form--because she had participated in the lynch mob that was wound up by a crazed Gaston. I'm not sure what the director was trying to say here, it seemed rather self-indulgent. It seems we don't all receive a happy ending in Disney's modern fairytale fantasy assembly line. The new take on the snowball fight scene was thoroughly enjoyable merely because Belle is so damned obnoxious. Slam her in the face with another one Beast!! But again, this is another mixed messaged. Belle getting the best of the Beast in the original was cute and satisfying. Please stop politicizing movies Hollywood!! The bleating and braying of Social Justice warriors is responsible for Disney's contemporary penchant for politicizing every film that they make. This new take on a beloved classic fails entirely to capture the magic and romance of the original. It was a poorly conceived vision that ends up feeling like a missed opportunity. I wouldn't have minded the new additional scenes, if this had been a more faithful live-action reproduction of what remains one of the most solid, delightful animated films Disney has ever produced. This new film is a massive departure from traditional Disney style, emotion, and theme. The creative team made their agenda so obvious that it overshadowed the entertainment value. Walt Disney is rolling over in his grave. It is an unintentionally (or perhaps intentionally) obsequious commentary on the current political and social climate. I deeply enjoyed the Beast's new song (his mournful roar in the original was adequate), but this new film only serves to reinforce for the viewer how truly incredible the original was. My wife and children confirmed their preference for the original even before hearing dad's opinions regarding this retreading. If anything, analyzing this film has created engaging philosophical discussions amongst my family and friends. Shameful. Stick to the classic. Save your money, or await the inevitable Netflix release. It's no surprise at all that the price keeps dropping. Wish I had not paid as much as I had to have it delivered on release day through my Prime membership.

Confession: I pretty much geeked out over this live-action remake. I don't go to a lot of movies, but I went to this one with my girlfriends and loved it, then again with my son and his family. There's a lot of things a person could criticize (like the overuse of autotune, the underuse of Kevin Kline singing talents and Stan Tucci's everything, and Ewan MacGregor's French accent), but there are so many positives, the feel-good stuff makes the rest forgivable (except the Kevin Kline thing). This remake isn't like Cinderella, which is a bit of masterful storytelling. Rather, Beauty and the Beast is very much a "production." My son calls it a high school musical on steroids, which it pretty much is, but that's what B&B had always been, especially the original animation. This live-action remake embraces that, and feels right. However, being a huge fan of the Broadway musical, I missed the songs they didn't include. On the other hand, the new ones (and the adjusted lyrics of some) were spot on. Things to like: * Lumiere is no longer a womanizing lady's man but a one-woman guy devoted to Plumette. Big improvement. * The relationships between the castle characters were really nicely developed in the short time they had to do it. * The blossoming relationship between Belle and Breast did a great job of dispelling the Stockholm Syndrome argument. Dan Stevens and Emma Watson just feel right together. Things that could be better: * Several of the deleted scenes really needed to be in included. Isn't it about time for a directors cut? * Belle's costume changes from the back of a horse. I get the dramatic impact, but, really? And she changes her shoes and picks up a jacket somewhere along the way in her mad dash back to the castle. Choose a direction, people, and stick to it. Is she crazy desperate to save first her father and then Beast? Or is she just going to stop off at the house for a bit to change her clothes? And if she did that, why not put on something appropriate instead of running around in her skivvies? Pet peeves: * Letting LaFou off the hook, with no consequences whatsoever for his criminal choices. Legally, he's just as guilty as Gaston of the attempted murder of Maurice. He was there, he knew the dangers and Gaston's intent, but he just went along with it. He did nothing to try to stop the crime or rescue Maurice. Then, he lied about it, which resulted in more crimes against Maurice. But, in the end, all is forgiven because he ... what? Catches Mrs. Potts? Forget Emma's untrained voice, and the continuity issues. The script's nonchalance about LaFou's crimes is the big issue here. * Why didn't Evermore earn a best original song Oscar? Alan Menkin was robbed. Bottom line: When Beauty and the Beast started streaming, I almost broke Netflix. When Disney pulled it, I went into withdrawals and had to buy my own digital copy. I figured, even if I never watched it again, I'd already got my money's worth.
