Discussion on the Implementation of the “Comprehensive Development of Medium-Sized Cities” Project

Representatives from the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Uzbekistan, experts from the World Bank, and other key stakeholders gathered for a hybrid-format meeting to review the progress of the “Comprehensive Development of Medium-Sized Cities” (CDMC) project. This important initiative, carried out in collaboration with the World Bank, is focused on transforming medium-sized cities in Uzbekistan into vibrant, sustainable, and resilient urban centers.

From the World Bank, key participants included Christoph Pusch, Practice Manager for Urban Development, Disaster Risk Management, Resilience, and Land in the Europe and Central Asia Region; Anastasia Alexandrova, Program Coordinator for Uzbekistan; Ildus Kamilov, Senior Urban Development Specialist; and Ahsan Tehsin, Senior Disaster Risk Management Specialist. Representing the Uzbek side were Ilkhom Norkulov, First Deputy Minister of Economy and Finance, Bekhruz Karimov, Head of Department for Debt Mobilization and Fakhritdin Majidov, Head of the Department for Debt Mobilization from International Financial Institutions, along with other officials actively engaged in the project.

Discussions during the meeting centered on the project’s work plan through December 2027, identifying key milestones and actionable objectives. Participants also deliberated on strategies to accelerate the project’s implementation by enhancing inter-agency coordination and addressing potential challenges.

The conversations highlighted crucial priorities, such as improving urban infrastructure, building climate-resilient communities, and creating better living conditions for residents in medium-sized cities. Stakeholders agreed on concrete steps to strengthen collaboration and ensure the project’s timely execution.

The CDMC project reflects Uzbekistan’s vision for fostering sustainable urban development, raising the standard of living for its citizens, and boosting local economic growth.

As the meeting concluded, participants reaffirmed their commitment to ongoing collaboration and pledged to continue working together to achieve the project’s ambitious goals.
