He lives in Florida and Carrie doesn't get to see him too often. His 56^th birthday is November 29^th, and all he wants are birthday cards - “LOTS OF EM” so, we’re trying to make his wish come true! They’ve set up a P.O. box and everything, and it would be awesome if you guys could help out!

You add potential penpals to a list, if you consistently return letters, or correspondence your penpal can go in and confirm you as reliable. These confirmations are redeemable for points, and then are automatically exchanged for certain flair (tiered medals or something). In this fashion active writers would then be more recognizable and there would be an incentive to write responses and return letters.
Every six months, I would be happy to send prizes to the most active penpals in this subreddit. (Probably pens, inks, nibs, or stationery.)
In addition, some people have reservations distributing their personal information, if they could see a user's community activity they might be more comfortable.

Elderly people can get very lonely in retirement/nursing homes and I'm sure many of them would enjoy having a pen pal. Elderly people have plenty of life experience and would likely make very interesting conversation. It's already quite common for people to volunteer as visitors to the elderly, and people who do tend to get more out of it than they would have expected.
So, does it sound like something worth doing? The moderators of the subreddit could contact nursing and retirement homes to find elderly people interested in having a pen pal, and anyone interested in volunteering could post their contact details and wait to be paired up.
