As a college student, I do not have much free time to watch TV. However, while I am working on homework, I tend to have a show playing in the background (which may distract me more than I would like to admit). Here are a couple that I have been becoming obsessed with recently:
As a student studying Public Relations, I enjoy seeing the ins and outs of the Communication Department of the White House. I have become enthralled with the fast-paced nature of the political circuit from this television drama. Although the series is a little dated (it aired from 1999 to 2006), it still stands the test of time with its big-time cast, including Rob Lowe , Dule Hill and Martin Sheen .
I am a huge Rob Lowe fan. He does not disappoint in this show as Chris Traeger, the hyper-positive, exercise-obsessed city manager. However, he is not the only stand-out character. The main characters such as Leslie Knope, Ron Swanson and Andy Dwyer are so archetypal that I am able to relate them to some of my closest friends.
My friends recently introduced me to this show. It is a dystopian thriller that focuses on the technological advancements of society and its downfalls. Each episode stands alone (although there are fan theories regarding how they are all connected). Although there are some graphic parts and strong language, it is a fascinating series for someone living in this technology-infused world.
The Office is a staple in the Netflix queue of college students. Although I have not worked in an actual office like the people at Dunder Mifflin, the pranks that Jim pulls on Dwight and the insanity of Michael’s useless meetings are aspects of life that are relatable.
Overall, these shows allow me to escape the never-ending cycle of homework, projects and essays. They give me outside perspectives and I enjoy getting lost in their worlds with characters like C.J. Cregg and Michael Scott.
I personally love networking with people. There is just something that I appreciate about meeting new people and hearing about their careers. I also enjoy being able to compare their experience with what I am looking for in a job, so that I can evaluate if I would like to pursue a similar career.
As a college student, it can be difficult to get off-campus and find those events to attend when you are not in the working world. It is also difficult to understand what kind of networking to do. Some of my biggest tips to network well are:
Talk to your already-established connections
Sometimes some of the best connections can be made through people that you already know. You may have a boss or coworker who knows someone who works in the field that you are interested in. It never hurts to ask because the worst thing they can say is no.
Professional organizations look great on a resume and they can help you meet new people who are within your field. Two that I have been interested in are: the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) . These can be great resources, as they host specific networking events or meetings.
There are some websites that are designed specifically to help with networking. I personally use LinkedIn to find many of the events that I am interested in attending. The key is to follow specific key terms in order to see posts related to that key term in your feed. For example, I use the key terms of #networking , #conferences and #publicrelations in order to find out more about opportunities in my area and around the country.
Informational interviews are a great way to learn more about the industry that you are interested in pursuing a career in. This is an opportunity to meet individually instead of in a large group. Informational interviews should only last 30 minutes or less, to be courteous of the interviewee’s time. This is a great website to help with coming up with questions to ask.
After you connect with someone, it is crucial to follow up with them. The way that I always follow up is by sending the person a thank you card, as well as messaging them online to let them know that the card is in the mail. This just displays to the person that you are interested in going the extra mile and understanding them. This is the template that I generally use.
A large part of the networking process is about bravery. Going out of your comfort zone is one of the biggest ways to meet new people. It is great to be the first one to introduce yourself to a speaker, or to ask the first question, because that distinguishes you from everyone else.
Sell yourself (while also staying true to yourself)
Confidence can have a greater impact than you may realize. In order to showcase the best version of yourself, it is critical to tell other people of your successes. However, it is important to be honest. If what you are saying is true, then it should not come across as being cocky.
Overall, networking can be intimidating to many college students. However, I believe that it is the key to success for finding the right job or internship when you graduate from college.
