From his creepy introduction in Ginger Town, to his final bout with Super Saiyan 2 Gohan, Cell has taken part in some of Dragon Ball Z's best fights.
Think of the best fights in Dragon Ball , and chances are most of them will be against arc villains. How can they not when considering the context? A fight against an arc’s main antagonist is always charged with narrative consequence. If the main villain is getting their hands dirty, that means the plot’s going to start moving– especially if it’s still early in the arc.
Cell is notable for only appearing roughly halfway through his arc, but arguably still playing a more active Frieza role in the Namek arc prior. Cell certainly fights a bit more if nothing else, taking part in some of Dragon Ball ’s best battles. From his creepy introduction in Ginger Town, to his final showdown with Gohan, Cell’s in some of DBZ ’s best fights.
What’s particularly interesting about Perfect Cell’s fight with Future Trunks is just how hopeless Trunks is made to feel. Up to this point, Trunks has fully embodied the idea that hope exists. Despite coming from a condemned, desolate timeline, Trunks genuinely believes in the hope that his mother instilled in him. Until Cell beats it out of him.
Trunks’ Grade 3 form is simply too slow to match up against Cell. The Artificial Human lets Trunks exhaust himself, essentially humiliating the boy throughout their whole fight. It gets to a point where Trunks accepts his fate and just gives into the idea of Cell killing him. It’s a pretty powerful moment that puts into perspective just how formidable Perfect Cell is meant to be, but the fight itself isn’t that exciting as far as choreography goes.
The confidence Vegeta exits the Room of Spirit and Time with is almost legendary, and the fact he’s actually able to beat Semi-Perfect Cell into submissions really cements the “cool” factors in Vegeta’s factor. All the same, this fight is about setting up Vegeta’s downfall. He’s become so strong, that Cell is a total disappointment in his eyes. Vegeta grossy overprepared, and now he’s desperate for more.
Which is something Cell catches onto, using Vegeta to his advantage. Semi-Perfect Cell is able to goad Vegeta into allowing him to absorb Android 18. Vegeta, operating at one of his worst points, allows Cell to absorb the Artificial Human, essentially throwing away the only advantage the Prince of All Saiyans had.
It doesn’t take long at all for Perfect Cell to turn the tables on Vegeta. Absorbing just Android 17 was enough for Cell to beef up considerably, but his Perfect form puts an entire year of Vegeta’s training to shame. Everything Vegeta threw out against Cell, is thrown back at home– and worse. Cell is stronger, Cell is crueler, and Cell is done letting Vegeta win.
Interestingly, Cell exhibits some Goku-esque mannerisms in this fight. His face even shares qualities with Goku’s in the manga. Knowing that Goku and Gohan are training does take away some of the tension of Cell completing his final form, but Vegeta’s beatdown helps build that tension back up.
Before all this Super Saiyan juggling can happen, however, good ol’ Tenshinhan stops by to try and save the day. With Cell having just absorbed Android 17, Semi-Perfect Cell sets his sights on 18. Unfortunately, Android 16 simply can’t keep up and Piccolo is completely out of commission. Tenshinhan has no choice but to bust out a series of Kikohos at Cell.
This isn’t really a traditional fight, but as it’s one of the last things Tenshinhan does in the series– and an important event that directly leads into Goku and Cell meeting for the first time– it’s very much worth pointing out. Especially since it puts back into perspective the fact raw power isn’t the end all, be all.
Even though Cell gives up his entire mystery almost immediately, that really doesn’t change just how brilliant his introduction is. Rarely does Dragon Ball tap into genuine terror, but the Cell arc capitalizes on it quite well, making frequent use of morbid and uncomfortable set pieces. Piccolo stepping foot onto what appears to be a raptured town is only made all the worse by Cell literally drinking someone on-screen.
While Cell isn’t the first character to throw out a Kamehameha, he’s the first to do so without context (which is clearly why Piccolo is caught so off guard.) From there, Cell’s bug-like proportions lead to some freaky looking choreography that really stands out in comparison to some of Cell’s other fights.
The arc’s final fight may not be its best, but it is a fantastic conclusion to the Cell arc. While the choreography is a bit lacking– with the fight almost completely devoid of any real physical combat considering the immediate damage Gohan’s arm takes– the emotional payoff is high. The father-son Kamehameha is a franchise defining moment for a reason.
This is the culmination of not just Gohan’s character arc, but his relationship with his father. In this fight, they stand united as father and son. It doesn’t matter if Goku is really there or not. His spirit lives on within Gohan, as does his strength. It’s not something the series follows through on, but it makes for an incredible end to the Cell arc.
Piccolo and 17’s fight leaves them completely exhausted for when Imperfect Cell arrives on the scene (or at least just Piccolo.) 17 himself is blindsided, but has a confidence Android 16 believes will absolutely get him absorbed. With Piccolo taken out without so much as a fight, 16 steps in and shows off in one of the Cell arc’s best fights.
The sheer novelty of two antagonists going at it is always fun, but 16 is an incredibly cool fighting style that plays off his robotic body. His detachable limbs add a dynamic layer to his attacks, and the fact 16 manages to give Cell a fair fight puts into perspective just how overwhelmingly powerful the android was all along.
Gohan and Cell may not have a personal connection before they start fighting, but they certainly develop one. Cell absolutely resents the fact that Gohan is subbing in for Goku, but push comes to shove and Gohan does start fighting back. After watching everyone he loves be beaten into submission by Cell Juniors, along with seeing 16 die before his eyes, Gohan transforms.
The choreography here is chaotic, with Gohan pulverizing Cell. Super Saiyan 2 Gohan’s movements are quick, landing heavy blows that render Cell immobile. Gohan’s punches get so brutal, Cell outright pukes up Android 18. It may not be the last fight, but it’s a great prelude that puts Cell in his place.
Had Goku actually stayed dead, this fight would likely be remembered as one of Dragon Ball ’s absolute best– a swan song that said goodbye to Goku in a perfect way. By giving Goku the fight of a lifetime while also having him forfeit on his own terms, Dragon Ball reinforces its core belief that there will always be someone better than you at the seeming end of Goku’s journey.
The fight is filled with an incredible mix of physical and Ki based choreography, with each chapter keeping a steady pace between Goku & Cell, no single fighters gaining the advantage. Goku going all out at the very end is a fantastic conclusion to the fight. Cell may want more, but Goku got everything he came for.
