We have created a complex language of acronyms as the internet encroaches increasingly into our lives, many of them designed to evade the spying of employers, partners and especially parents.
There are the mainstays such as BRB for be right back and LOL for laughing out loud (and occasionally lots of love), as well as w/e for weekend.
Mobile phones and instant messaging have led to a language of acronyms and codes. Credit: Glenn Hunt
Here's a list of 15 of the most commonly used acronyms
TTYL : Talk to you later, usually used to end or delay a conversation
ROFL : Rolling on the floor laughing
FWB : Friends with benefits (friends who also have sex)
IMHO : In my honest (or humble) opinion
Acronyms are particularly popular among teenagers keen to avoid their parents' surveillance, especially of their relationships and sex lives.
Here are 15 of the most frequently used, and, most deceptively, acronyms popular among teenagers.

Texting, instant messaging and chat rooms use a strange, new language that’s filled with abbreviations and acronyms designed to quickly communicate and easily disguise a myriad of sex and drug terminology. It’s beyond the comprehension of most adults.
Some of the abbreviations and acronyms have been created so that kids can continue their conversation with friends while a parent is watching over their shoulder, confident the old folks are clueless. For example, if you saw your daughter sending the text message, “PAW GYPO & Ill GNOC later” would you know she just scheduled a time for a naked video camera session after you go to bed for the night? And what’s more frightening than not knowing when your 13-year old keyed LMIRL in a chat room, it meant “Let’s meet in real life?”
So here you go. Here’s the Rosetta Stone of texting/chatting/emailing. A comprehensive guide to acronyms, abbreviations, phrases and lingo to look for on your kid’s phone or computer. Some are outright disgusting and we hope you never see your kids use them. Others are harmless on their own but still important to know in context.
If you feel guilty taking a peek at your little darling’s computer and phone, remember one thing: You paid for them.
LOLTWOM (Laughing out loud, they won’t outsmart me).
Warning: many of these terms are offensive

95% of these abbreviations have never met my eyes to be honest. And anyone I know and that I have texted throughout my teen years have honestly never texted me most of these on the list. I’m 19 so I know what I’m talking about, and I am being honest. I bet if any of you parents stole you kids phone while they were sleeping only 1% would probably have some of this idiocy on there. XD who we should be worrying about should be the person who made the list. O.o

Oh. my…. I can’t even… where do I start? Ok, I seriously am about to throw up. I am a teen myself and I type like a normal human. Nobody knows these abbreviations, I only know like.. three. I don’t even use “lol”. Who made this list? Probably a PARENT. If your kid is memorizing this list they have serious problems.
But you’re obviously not an ordinary teen. You can spell and punctuate.
I mean i would totally use those but like the first commment said there not popular
I mean I would totally use those, but like the first comment said, they’re not popular.
Apparently, punctuation and spelling aren’t popular either. It’s ok, I fixed it for you.

The list of abbreviations includes code for 'kill yourself' and 'take your clothes off'
With so much interaction done online, it's increasingly tricky to know when your child is potentially in danger .
The line between trusting your child (and respecting their privacy) and policing them out of concern is a fine one for parents to tread.
The online world is perpetually changing, and it can be difficult to be alert to which mediums are used and what exactly is going on.
To help worried parents, the Police Service of Northern Ireland have elected to post an American style graphic sexting dictionary on Facebook for parents to familiarise themselves with online talk.
It is a decision which the PSNI have also had to defend.
The police in Newry and Mourne asked parents on Facebook: Do you understand text talk?
Ranging from salacious come-ons to disturbing orders to "kill yourself" it gives a sometimes uncomfortable glimpse into what happen online.
Presumably more in-the-know, young readers have pointed out the urban tech dictionary is not current.
A spokesman for Newry and Mourne PSNI, said: "As a follow up to the text talk post just to clarify that this was an American resource and indeed some of the codes may not be being used here but it is something to be aware off if you see cryptic messages on your kids devices.
"Also prevention is better than cure so speak to your kids about their online activity, what they are using and respect the age limits of social media platforms – is it proper to set up a kid with a Facebook account at eight years old?
"What is an appropriate age to give your child a smart phone or device and data or wifi access?
"There are hundreds of text talk codes – a simple online search will reveal what any codes you spot actually mean."
Belfast Live have since published an up-to-date version of the most common abbreviation s.
