" Private Investigations " is a song by the British rock band Dire Straits from their album Love over Gold . It reached number 2 in the United Kingdom (despite its length), and is one of their biggest chart successes in the UK. The track has appeared on the compilation albums Money for Nothing and Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits , and is the title track to the more recent 2005 compilation, Private Investigations: The Best of Dire Straits & Mark Knopfler .

The song begins with a deep-pitched synthesizer orchestration, leading into a slow piano progression accompanying a classical guitar, followed by several spoken verses. The single edit removes the opening synthesisers, beginning with acoustic guitar.

After the verses, the song opens into a slow, bass-driven beat, with strident electric guitar chords at the end, before the gradual diminuendo featuring extended interplay between Mark Knopfler 's acoustic guitar and marimba played by Mike Mainieri .

On the Sultans of Swing: The Very Best of Dire Straits DVD , Mark Knopfler said this about the song: "It's just about the Private Investigations... "What have you got at the end of the day" – Nothing more than you started out with..." It is said the song was inspired by author Raymond Chandler . [1]

This song was also modified by Mark Knopfler into a film score for the Bill Forsyth movie Comfort and Joy in 1984, where you can hear the song broken up into portions and used for certain scenes.

It was also used in the video release of the 1984 film Against All Odds during the deleted scenes. A section of the footage cut from the final release dealt with the time spent on the run, in Mexico, by Rachel Ward’s & Jeff Bridges' characters.

The riff from the song was used in France on a Crédit Agricole advert in 1984, and on a BT advert in 1994.

Does this genius artist and his band proud.

Best of collection. Lots of music I hadn't heard before. Overall really good CD.

Nice selections of songs, but could have included more from the first Dire Straits album.

Nice mix of Mark Knopfler with the band and solo

Nice single disc collection of Dire Straits' best.

It looks exactly like it - same cover photo, same title. Never seen anything like this. Returning, very disappointing.

Good compilation of an English group who sound American

Nothing startling here - just a decent compilation of songs that most Dire Straits fans will be familiar with - so why not have it in your own collection? It didn't introduce me to any "new-sounding" material, but I doubt that there was any intention to produce more than a "best-of" album. Actually, I started out believing that Dire Straits were an American group (my brother-in-law put me right). For a N.E. England group, they can definitely come over as pretty "Creole" when they want to.

This compilation brought back some good memories for me. I always liked Dire Straits without ever being a big fan. Its easy to listen how they have developed over the years from a blues/folk/rock style to a progressive style with more keyboard influences. Its apparent that the acoustic guitar is where Mark Knopfler is happiest as he eventually left to pursue his true love of folk and blues. I think what I like most about Straits is the way the tracks just flow smoothly with not too many surprises. The bass and drums are kept simple while MK talks/sings almost like he,s just making a matter of fact comment. The guitar parts are obviously the biggest factor in their success and its maybe because even these were tastefully understated in an age of screaming amps and diving tremolos. I still like them and this selection makes me think I,m a bigger fan than I first let on.

Arrived promptly and in good condition from 'Magpie'. A quality selection of memorable songs and haunting melodies from Mark. Recommended.

nothing dire bout this guy

I was reminded how good Dire Straits were when I saw Mark Knopfler and his band the other night. I was invited along by a friend who is a fan and was pleasantly surprised with the great evening,s entertainment. I was so impressed I decided to invest in this album (I only had Brothers in Arms in the 80s). I've got in the car and it's not been off since I got it. Respect, Mr K!

P.I. & Summary

The title of the CD says it all, 'Private Investigations', my go to track. The rest is pretty good too regarding Dire Streets's stand out material, but huge fan's might prefer to buy the more comprehensive individual album CD's.

This is the second track on Dire Straits' 1982 album “Love Over Gold.”
It evokes the private detectives of classic film noir.
The song itself is mainly instrumental, with most of the song comprising of nothing more than a steady drumbeat, interrupted by guitar chords that are only more striking for their scarcity.

To be honest, I haven't picked my way through too much of this book. I just sat down and played through Walk of Life, and that was correct and informative. I started to play Darling Pretty, and found two errors during the intro. These were unusual mistakes. In both of them, the standard notation was correct, but either the chord or the tab was in error. In one case, the chord was supposed to be A/C#, and the # was left off. The other one had an F# played on the high E string during an A chord. It's rare that I find obvious errors in tab books, so this stands out. However, there are some benefits to this book - the spacing is great. They've picked a very enjoyable and easy-to-read font for printing the book, so it's very easy to learn it by sight. This is a huge, huge benefit over older transcriptions of Money for Nothing and Sultans of Swing.

As I’ve gotten deeper into the book, I’ve realized that this isn’t much of a transcript at all. Multiple guitar parts have been condensed (or ignored). You get a tab of just one often not very good guitar. Walk of Life — Knopfler plays a shuffle unique to his style but the book just shows you the bass notes (what plays with his thumb). There is an effort to transcribe his licks. My biggest gripe? This songbook does not include all of the songs from the album. It has all of the most popular songs, but make sure it has what you want. Skateaway is one of my favorite songs and it doesn't appear in this book...

This was a disappointment. While not useless, it is not comparable to a real Hal Leonard Guitar Recorded Versions book, which have been pretty comprehensive in my experience. My main interest was Sultans and it only includes one guitar part, and the vocal line was a lazy effort - it do
