Jackson, Wyoming – Winter, 2045

The snow fell softly over Jackson, muffling the sounds of the world. Dina tightened her scarf, her breath forming small clouds in the cold air. The settlement was alive with the usual hum of survivors—children laughing, traders bartering, guards patrolling the walls. But for Dina, something always felt… missing.

It had been two years since Ellie left. Two years of waking up to an empty bed, of glancing at the porch where they used to sit together, sharing stories and stolen kisses. Dina had thrown herself into work—helping with patrols, teaching the kids self-defense, even learning to fix radios. But no matter how busy she kept, the ache never fully faded.

'You’re doing it again.'

Dina turned to see Jesse’s younger sister, Maya, smirking at her. The girl was barely sixteen but sharp as a knife.

'Doing what?' Dina asked, feigning ignorance.

'Staring at the gate like she’s gonna walk through it any second.'

Dina sighed, rubbing her gloved hands together. 'Old habits.'

Maya hesitated, then pulled something from her pocket—a small, crumpled photo. 'Found this in Jesse’s old stuff. Thought you should have it.'

Dina took it gently. The photo showed her, Ellie, and Jesse, arms around each other, grinning like the world wasn’t broken. A lump formed in her throat.

'Thanks,' she whispered.

Maya nodded. 'You know… if you ever wanted to go after her—'

'I can’t,' Dina cut in. 'I have JJ. And this life… it’s good. Stable.'

'But is it enough?'

The question hung in the air. Before Dina could answer, shouts erupted from the watchtower.

'Riders approaching! Single horse!'

Dina’s heart lurched. She sprinted through the snow, joining the guards at the gate. Through the falling flakes, a lone figure on horseback emerged.

The rider was hooded, their face hidden, but Dina knew.

The gate creaked open.

The horse stopped.

And then—

'Hey, stranger.'

Ellie pulled back her hood, her face scarred, her eyes weary but soft.

Dina’s breath caught. Every emotion she’d buried came rushing back—anger, love, fear, hope.

'You’re late,' Dina managed, voice shaking.

Ellie dismounted, wincing slightly from an old injury. 'Took the scenic route.'

For a moment, they just stared at each other, the years of hurt and silence between them. Then, JJ’s voice piped up from behind Dina.

'Mama? Who’s that?'

Ellie’s gaze dropped to the little boy clutching Dina’s leg. Her expression shifted—surprise, guilt, wonder.

Dina swallowed hard. 'Ellie… this is JJ.'

A tear slipped down Ellie’s cheek. She crouched slowly, meeting the boy’s curious eyes. 'Hey, kiddo.'

JJ hid behind Dina, peeking out shyly.

Dina reached out, her fingers brushing Ellie’s. 'You staying this time?'

Ellie looked up, her grip tightening. 'If you’ll have me.'

The snow kept falling. The world kept turning.

And maybe, just maybe, some things could still be mended.
