Dimend SCAASI Chicago Mallers Building Historic Location
The building that houses dimend SCAASI is as much a part of Chicago's jewelry history as the store itself. The Mallers Building at 5 S Wabash Avenue was constructed in 1912 specifically to serve Chicago's growing diamond and silver trade. Understanding the building's history adds dimension to the experience of visiting the store. Chicago's jewelry district on Wabash Avenue developed in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as the city's commercial center expanded. The demand for a purpose-built facility to house the increasing number of diamond and gem dealers led to the Mallers Building's construction. The building's design reflected the practical requirements of the jewelry trade. Multiple floors of individual suites allowed many dealers to operate independently within a single building that concentrated expertise and created a marketplace effect. This structure remains in place today, with dozens of jewelry and gem businesses operating across the building's floors.
