The Defence Horizon Journal (TDHJ) is an independent international platform connecting defence scholarship, professional practice and strategic dialogue.
Our mission is to advance informed debate on security and defence by bringing together researchers, military professionals, practitioners and policy experts from around the world.
We publish articles, podcasts, videos and conference proceedings while maintaining high editorial standards, independence and academic integrity. As an entirely volunteer-driven organisation, we believe that meaningful institutions are built by people who are committed to a shared purpose and willing to develop together.
Many of our editors, reviewers and contributors joined TDHJ as volunteers. Some have remained with us for years; others have gone on to new professional opportunities. We see this as one of our greatest strengths: we develop people while advancing independent defence scholarship.
We are now looking to expand our Digital Media Team.
Role Description
As a Digital Media & Audience Development Volunteer, you will help ensure that TDHJ's research, articles and multimedia content reach the audiences who can benefit most from them.
Working closely with our editorial team, you will contribute to the discoverability and digital presentation of our publications while fully respecting our editorial independence and professional standards.
Depending on your interests and experience, your responsibilities may include:
* Optimising YouTube videos (titles, descriptions, chapters and metadata)
* Supporting LinkedIn and other social media activities
* Developing ideas to improve the visibility of TDHJ's multimedia content
* Assisting with website optimisation and digital communications
* Analysing audience engagement and identifying opportunities for improvement
* Exploring how AI and digital tools can responsibly support editorial workflows
* Contributing ideas for the continued development of TDHJ's digital presence
This is not a marketing role in the traditional sense.
Our objective is not simply to increase numbers, but to ensure that rigorous defence scholarship reaches the audiences searching for it.
You will work with an international team of volunteers who value professionalism, mutual respect, curiosity and continuous learning.
Qualifications
We are primarily looking for the right person rather than the perfect résumé.
Previous professional experience is welcome but not essential.
We value commitment, curiosity and a willingness to learn more than polished résumés.
You may be a good fit if you have:
* An interest in defence, security or international affairs
* Good written English
* Curiosity about digital media, YouTube, social media or online publishing
* A structured and reliable way of working
* A willingness to learn and contribute within an international volunteer team
* The ability to work independently while collaborating closely with others
Experience with YouTube Studio, SEO, WordPress, LinkedIn, Canva, Adobe Creative Cloud or AI-assisted productivity tools is welcome but not required.
* Most importantly, we are looking for someone who shares our values of integrity, professionalism and continuous development.
