Different Prices for One Part
Why Two Car Accessory Shops Charge Very Different Prices for One PartTwo cars leave two different car accessory shops on the same afternoon with the same head unit, the same reversing camera, the same tinted glass. Both look identical in the car park. Eighteen months later one of them has a dash rattle nobody can locate, a battery that dies if the car sits for four days, and a warning light the dealer says is not their problem. The parts were the same. The hands were not.
So the question is not which shop sells the accessory cheaper. Every shop can buy the same box. The question is what each of them does to your car in the two hours after you hand over the keys and walk to the coffee shop.
The part has a public price, so the discount comes out of the labour
Any customer can find the item online in thirty seconds, which means the part has almost no margin left in it. What remains negotiable is time, and time is the one line on the invoice nobody itemises.
That time is spent on things you will never see once the trim is clipped back. How power was taken from the loom. Whether broken clips were replaced or pushed back into a stretched hole. Whether the wiring for a dash camera was routed around the airbag path in the A-pillar or straight across it, which is not a rattle problem but a safety one.
Electrical shortcuts are the most common and the most expensive later. A quick-splice connector bites through the insulation of a factory wire and leaves copper exposed inside a plastic clamp. In a humid climate that joint corrodes, resistance climbs, and the fault appears months later as something that looks unrelated: an intermittent screen reset, a parasitic drain, a sensor throwing a code. By then nobody connects it to the accessory.
W-T-P is what separates a workshop from a fitting counter
Three letters to hold in your head when you walk in. Wiring, Trim, Paper. Ask about all three before you talk about price.
W — how the shop takes power
Ask the question directly: where does this get its power, and how. The answer you want involves the fuse box and an add-a-circuit tap, or a plug-and-play harness made for your model, with grounds landed on a factory ground point rather than a random bolt.
The answer you do not want is a shrug, or a splice into whatever wire was nearest. A shop that talks fluently about fuse ratings and ignition-switched circuits is telling you something about the rest of its work.
T — what comes off and how it goes back
Every install means removing trim, and trim clips are consumables. Good shops keep clip sets on the shelf for common models and price replacements into the job. Fitting counters reuse whatever survived.
Look at a finished car in their bay before you commit. Panel gaps even, no stress marks around the screen surround, no daylight at the edge of a pillar cover. Rattles are almost always a reassembly problem, not a parts problem.
P — what gets written down
Get the labour warranty in writing, separate from the manufacturer warranty on the part itself. Those are two different promises and shops often blur them deliberately.
Ask what happens if the accessory damages a factory system, who diagnoses it, and who pays. A shop that will put a labour term on paper is accepting that its own work can fail. That willingness is the strongest signal available to you.
The warranty question your dealer will not answer nicely
Aftermarket work does not automatically void a factory warranty, but a dealer can decline a claim on a component the modification plausibly affected, and electrical accessories touch a lot of components. The argument usually turns on how the work was done rather than whether it was done.
Keep the invoice, the photos, and the wiring description together in one place. If a dispute ever starts, documentation of a clean install is worth more than your memory of a conversation.
Ask to see the fuse box before you leave a deposit
Pick the shop you are leaning toward and ask to look at a car they are working on right now, specifically at the fuse box and the A-pillar. You are not inspecting for expertise you do not have. You are checking whether they hesitate.
Then ask the W-T-P questions in that order, and listen to how fast the answers come. Fuse tap or splice. New clips or old. Labour warranty in writing or a handshake.
A shop that answers all three without pausing is charging more for a reason. That reason will still be under your dash long after the price difference stops mattering.
