Die auffälligste Figur unter den Piraten des Fernen Ostens war eine Chinesin, Ms. Qia, die um die Wende vom 18. zum 19. Jahrhundert lebte. In kurzer Zeit wurde sie zur inoffiziellen Admiralin der gesamten chinesischen Piratenflotte. Die geschickte Frau befehligte sechs Staffeln, auf denen sie eiserne Disziplin aufstellte. Sie war eine talentierte Marinekommandantin und gewann mehr als einmal Siege über die Regierungsflotte, die Piraten jagte. Die chinesischen Behörden konnten mit der "Admiralin" nicht fertig werden und schlossen mit ihr eine Vereinbarung, wonach jeder Pirat, der sein kriminelles Handwerk aufgab, Gelder erhielt, um ein neues Leben zu beginnen. Qing selbst konnte ihre alten Gewohnheiten nie vergessen und lebte ihr Leben als Anführerin einer großen Schmugglerbande.
Ab Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts Piraterie in ihrer ursprünglichen Form bedrohte die Schifffahrt nicht mehr. Es existiert jedoch immer noch, hauptsächlich in den Meeren in der Nähe von China und Südostasien. Im Schutz der Nacht greifen Piraten auf leichten und schnellen Motorbooten oder kleinen Fischerbooten Schiffe im Hafen an, und dann ist alles wie bei ihren Vorgängern, nur jetzt ziehen sie es immer noch vor, die Besatzung nicht zu töten.
Die moderne Piraterie, die ihr früheres Aussehen längst verloren hat, ist nicht weniger gefährlich geworden. Francis Drake (1545-1596) wurde in Devonshire (England) in eine Bauernfamilie geboren. Sein Vater wurde später Schiffskaplan, und so ersetzte das Schiff Francis ab seinem vierten Lebensjahr durch ein Haus. 1561 hinterließ ihm der Besitzer des kleinen Schiffes, auf dem Francis segelte, nach seinem Tod sein Schiff. So wurde Drake im Alter von 16 Jahren Kapitän.
Drake unternahm 1566 seine erste Expedition für Sklaven, die von einem Verwandten von Francis Hawkins organisiert wurde. Damals brauchte England selbst keine Sklaven, aber es war ein sehr profitables Produkt, das die Spanier gerne kauften, um in ihren Kolonien zu arbeiten. Der spanische König verbot seinen Untertanen, Sklaven aus Afrika von den Briten zu kaufen, aber solche illegalen Geschäfte waren keineswegs selten.
Bereits als Kapitän und Begleiter nahm Drake 1567 an einer neuen Expedition seines Verwandten Hawkins zu den Küsten Afrikas und Lateinamerikas teil. In Amerika befanden sich damals die Besitztümer der portugiesischen und spanischen Könige. Ein riesiger Reichtum, der von dort exportiert wurde, zog die gierigen Augen von Räubern aller Couleur an. Das verarmte England förderte die Aktionen seiner Korsaren (Korsaren sind Piraten im Dienst des Staates; siehe Artikel "Piraten"), die nach ihrer Rückkehr ihre Beute mit Königin Elizabeth teilten. Die gestohlenen Wertsachen füllten die verarmte Schatzkammer erheblich auf.
Auf seiner zweiten Expedition befehligte Drake ein kleines Schiff „.Judith“ mit einer Verdrängung von 50 Tonnen.Die Expedition war erfolglos, obwohl Drakes Schiff nicht beschädigt wurde. Nur 2 von 5 Schiffen der Expedition und 80 von 500 Menschen kehrten in den Hafen von Plymouth zurück.Drake brannte vor Rache. Er beschloss, sich dem König von Spanien zu widersetzen und die „Schatzkammer der Welt“ zu erobern, die Stadt San Juan de Uloa, in der sich Reichtümer aus ganz Mexiko ansammelten, um nach Spanien geschickt zu werden.
1572 beschloss Francis Drake auf zwei Schiffen „Pasha“ und „Swan“, seinen Racheplan auszuführen.
Scheitern schien Drake zu verfolgen. Zuerst eroberte er die Stadt, in die die Schätze noch nicht gebracht worden waren. Dann organisierte er einen erfolglosen Angriff auf die Karawane. Aber der sture Korsar gab nicht auf. Er setzte sich das Ziel, die Schätze Spaniens zu erobern, und kein Hindernis würde ihn von seinem Weg abbringen.
