Um, what exactly is the “penis facial”?
The penis facial is a little controversial. Here’s why.

Hollywood stars love their eccentric facials, and it often seems like they’ll put anything on their faces. The latest buzzy ingredient? Foreskins. Yes, you read that right.
Last week, Sandra Bullock appeared on “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” and revealed that she and Cate Blanchett are fans of what they’ve dubbed the “penis facial.” We’ll admit, it sounds more X-rated than luxurious.
The treatment involves the use of something called epidermal growth factors, or EGF for short, which are derived from stem cells taken from the discarded foreskins of newborn babies in Korea. EGF is said to help rejuvenate the skin, improve overall skin texture and correct discoloration. It’s also known for its ability to aid in wound healing.
The specific facial both Blanchett and Bullock got is called the Hollywood EGF facial treatment from The Georgia Louise Atelier in New York, which started offering the facial last year. The treatment will cost you at least $650.
A representative for Louise’s atelier told HuffPost in an email that the facial consists of a TCA chemical peel , followed by micro-needling. Micro-needling, as Dr. Samer Jaber of Washington Square Dermatology told HuffPost, involves a process of creating tiny holes in the skin with a special tool (essentially wounding the skin), to promote healing and the creation of new collagen. The treatment also allows for better, deeper product absorption, he said.
Dr. Rachel Nazarian, of Schweiger Dermatology Group expanded on the treatment, telling HuffPost the absorption of products is “exponentially increased” after micro-needling, which helps “trigger anti-aging much deeper, which is where you want it.”
Following the micro-needling, Louise uses a special “electrifying” mask to calm the skin. Then comes the “penis” aspect, what Louise calls her “secret box” of EGF serum. The EGF is “derived from the progenitor cells of the human fibroblast taken from Korean newborn baby foreskin ― which helps to generate collagen and elastin,” the atlier’s rep added.
Louise said in an email that she’s mindful of informing her clients about where the EGF comes from. (For what it’s worth, Louise’s serum is FDA approved .)
“I always explain that EGF is derived from newborn baby foreskin, BUT cells were taken and from that, new cells are cloned from a laboratory,” she said. “The EGF serum only contains cloned cells.”
Nazarian said that once an initial stem cell has been taken from the source, in this case a discarded foreskin, “you don’t need to keep taking it. You just need the one initial [stem cell] and you can keep growing it forever and ever and ever.”
The use of EGF in skincare treatments and products isn’t particularly new , Nazarian said. In fact, she said, professionals have been using it for years with mirco-needling, among other applications. Beauty brands, such as DHC , Mizon , and Peter Thomas Roth also sell products that use it.
EGF is a polypeptide (a chain of amino acids) found in the skin’s fibroblast that promotes cell growth, development and healing, according to skincare brand Bioeffect , which uses a form of EGF in some of its products. In 1986, scientists Stanley Cohen and Rita Levi-Montalcini were awarded the Nobel Prize for their discoveries of growth factors.
A study that looked at the role of EGF in cosmetic products and treatments noted that while topically applied EGF and other growth factors have been shown to rejuvenate the skin, their molecules are actually quite big, which can make it hard for them to penetrate the skin. That’s why micro-needling is involved, opening a path for better absorption.
Another small study , which used EGF derived from barley instead of foreskins, found that use of an EGF serum twice daily for three months improved the appearance of brown spots, pore size, wrinkles and even overall skin texture.
Questions regarding the ethics of cultivating EGF or penis-derived cells have been raised over the years. As Quartzy pointed out, Oprah once endorsed a Skinmedica cream containing stem cells derived from baby foreskin, sparking controversy with at least one anti-circumcision activist group.
The newly piqued interest spurred by Bullock’s recent “Ellen” interview has sparked criticism from another anti-circumcision group, Intact America .
“That Bullock and DeGeneres could joke about using foreskins, taken without consent from Korean baby boys, for a beauty treatment indicates a total lack of understanding of the ethics involved,” Intact’s executive director, Georganne Chapin, said in an emailed statement.
While the EGF in many beauty products appears to come from Korean babies, it should be noted that the growth factor can also be found in kidneys , urine and saliva . Alternatively, Bioeffect uses an EGF derived from barley.
Nazarian said that snail excretions ― another buzzy beauty ingredient, especially in Korean skincare products ― also contain a growth factor similar to that in baby foreskin.
However, she said a growing group of dermatologists (herself included) believe that EGF derived from human skin can provide the best results for their clients.
“You’re putting it on human skin, so you’d want something that is more identical to what the human body would do to itself to heal,” Nazarian said. “I used to use a lot of snail secretions for my growth factors and stem cells, but now I’m switching over to more human.”
The reason dermatology favors EGF derived from foreskins, as opposed to saliva or urine, isn’t totally clear. Nazarian explained that while growth factors derived from saliva or urine could theoretically be used in skincare, “they don’t have exactly the same functions as those from skin.” They do, however, overlap in their abilities for wound healing.
“I don’t have a clear explanation as to why they’re not used, and why foreskin is preferred in dermatology, but it’s likely because it’s more directly related to the type of cell we’re targeting (skin!) and it’s so easy to harvest (as opposed to salivary gland cells or other options),” Nazarian said.
For now, at least, foreskin isn’t scaring off the likes of Bullock and Blanchett.

What It Is: The “Hollywood EGF Facial” , otherwise known as the “Penis Facial” thanks to stars like Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, who both swear by it for radiant, glowy skin

Who Tried It: Jillian Ruffo, Associate Beauty Editor

Why We Tried It: Let me ask you this: Would you pass up the chance to have skin that looks as smooth as Blanchett or Bullock’s? (We didn’t think so.)

Level of Difficulty: 2, if you factor in very mild pain and upkeep

It all started back in March, when Blanchett opened up about her skincare secret : a special facial at esthetician Georgia Louise ‘s New York City skincare atelier, which Bullock turned her on to. She called it the “Penis Facial” — which, after further investigation, we learned got its name from the treatment’s ingredients. And on Thursday’s episode of The Ellen DeGeneres Show , Bullock explained not only why the treatment is so good, but also the reason behind the name.

Bullock explains that through a microneedling technique, the facial boosts collagen by enabling serums, including an epidermal growth factor (or EGF) serum to seep deeper into the skin. The serum, she tells DeGeneres, is “an extraction from a piece of skin that came from a young person far, far away.” But as DeGeneres bluntly points out, the EGF is derived from “foreskin from a Korean baby.”

Yes, she’s right. The serum is made from the foreskin of a baby’s penis. As a representative for Louise explains, “For the Hollywood EGF Facial treatment, Georgia Louise uses her TCA peels, micro-needling machine and an electrifying mask to calm the skin, followed by her ‘secret box’ of EGF serum (Epidermal Growth Factor). EGF is derived from the progenitor cells of the human fibroblast taken from Korean newborn baby foreskin – which helps to generate collagen and elastin.”

Further, Louise tells PeopleStyle of the FDA-approved serum, which uses skin collected during circumcision, “I always explain that EGF is derived from newborn baby foreskin, BUT cells were taken [from the foreskin] and from that, new cells are cloned from a laboratory.”

“It’s not like I’m lying there with little pieces all over my face,” Bullock tells DeGeneres. “I call it the penis facial. And I think when you see how good it is to your face, you too will run to your local facialist and say, ‘give me the penis.'”

And that, my friends, is exactly what I did — but instead of just any facialist, I went straight to the Louise’s NYC spa to receive the exact treatment that Bullock and Blanchett have received. Spoiler alert: I didn’t end up looking like them, but my skin looked pretty damn good for days afterward.

“It started last year when Sandra Bullock was filming in NYC and came to see me for a deep cleansing and long-lasting facial glow. I wanted to give her something that would transform her skin without the need to undergo lasers, so I loaded up her bespoke facial with something that would give her long lasting results,” Louise says. “I have text threads which would blow your mind from celebs, asking for the ‘penis treatment’ all the time now!”

I arrived at Louise’s super-fancy spa on the Upper East Side of Manhattan, I sat down in the lobby, which is placed in the first floor of a chic brownstone, and was offered a cup of black tea in fine china. Fancy, I know. Eventually, I made my way back to the treatment room with my esthetician, Sarah, who explained that my skin would be red afterwards, and that I’d have to abstain from wearing makeup for 24 hours, and steer clear of hot water or harsh products. I obliged.

But I soon learned that while it definitely would be one of the best facials I’ll probably ever get in my life, it probably wouldn’t be the most relaxing. Sarah cleansed my skin (this part was relaxing) and then applied a gentle chemical peel to sterilize my skin. Next came the numbing cream. She massaged it all over my face, and then had me lay under red and blue lights (they have great anti-aging and anti-inflammatory properties, respectively) while the numbness kicked in. Soon enough, I couldn’t feel my face — which meant it was time for the most important part of the facial: microneedling.

The microneedling machine is an electric wand with a dozen tiny needles at the end. Yes, it looks — and sounds — scary, but since I was numb, it wasn’t so bad. Sarah pressed the needles into my skin in a linear pattern, poking teeny tiny holes into the surface of my face. While she did this, she applied the EGF serum — yes, the baby foreskin one — so that it penetrated immediately. The process took about 30 minutes — and while I was relieved that it was over, I was eager to see if I had yet morphed into Bullock during that time.

But I wasn’t done yet. Next, Sarah applied a second chemical peel, and then a thick liquid face mask that she even smoothed over my eyes and mouth. Since I couldn’t see or speak, I motioned for her to take photos of me looking like a science project (above). Then, she hooked the edges of the mask up to an electrifying machine, which would send waves through my skin to lift, tone and soothe it. After that, she swiped on a few more serums and SPF and I was on my merry way.

The Verdict : As if the resounding “you look glowing” from my coworkers didn’t prove how good the results were, I must have looked in the mirror to examine my skin about 20 times upon arriving at work. There wasn’t as much redness as I had expected, and I truly was glowing. My pores looked smaller, my cheekbones looked more defined, and the lines in my forehead that usually bug me were nowhere in sight. But beyond that, it felt smooth and firm for days. Since the experience, my usual redness has disappeared, enabling me to skip foundation, and there’s still a radiance about my skin that wasn’t there before. And while I certainly don’t have the budget (or the time, for that matter) to get these on the regular like the Ocean’s 8 cast, you better believe I’ll be taking better care of my skin from here on out in hopes of maintaining the results. Thanks, Sarah (and you, too, Sandra!).

Ok this might sound wierd, but I had jock itch really bad 9 months ago while i was on antibiotics, then stopped them.
it was bad but went away after a month, then 2 months after i had some folliclitis around the pubic area, and a staph infection on my top lip that antibiotics cleared up.

Thing is, since then i've dated two girls and both had perfectly soft lips and clear skin.
After making out and oral sex,  after some time both of them developed reaaally dry flaky lips and  skin generally dryer.

This has happened twice to the last 2 girls ive dated.

Is there any way that somehow there lips and skin are being affected by me in this horrible way?

Hello,
Only if you have a fungal infection of the skin, can it be transmissible. Dry skin and chapped lips are not contagious. It can be due to vit B deficiency. Take some vitamin B complex for some days and see if your symptoms improve.
Secondly,it can be due to atopic dermatitis or eczema("Atopic" refers to a group of diseases where there is often an inherited tendency to develop other allergic conditions, such as asthma and hay fever). Cheilitis (Inflammation of the skin on and around the lips)is often seen in atopic dermatitis. Diagnosed by blood test like RAST. Treatment is by topical steroids or oral therapy of corticosteroids in severe cases. Topical creams like tacrolimus ointment (Protopic) and pimecrolimus cream (Elidel) are also useful.
I hope it helps. Take care and please do keep me posted in case you have any additional doubts. Kind regards.
