As an amateur jockey, Roland Britten was lucky; as an accountant he was zealous. He knew he was on the hate list of several fraudsters, but never thought pen-pushers got kidnapped - not from a racecourse. Not after winning the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The identity of the kidnappers unknown, the reason behind Britten's abduction is a mystery. Then, with the help of old school headmistress Hilary Pinlock, he escapes and begins to use his accountant's logic to track his abductors down. But they have other ideas ...'Dick Francis holds his form like a top-class chaser' The Times Literary Supplement

One of his first and one of my favorites. In fact I think it was the first Dick Francis book I read. In this book you see the despicable villains, the clever and ingenious hero, the magnificent horses and the perfect, lovely girl which characterize many Francis books. Most of all you see the deep passion for racing of the horses and riders. You feel like you are in the in the book. This is why Dick Francis is one of the best mystery writers of all time. Oh, and it has horses too!

The mystery in this wasn't bad, but the rest was lacking. The lengthy periods of imprisonment and abuse were excessive. We got the idea without hammering us over the head with it at length. Putting some periods of investigation instead of his figuring it out while sitting in the dark would have improved the novel. And the love interest was simply lame. She was childish and daddy obsessed, with not even an ounce of empathy.

What a treat. I stumbled upon a Dick Francis novel that I had not yet read. Great. Recommend. Love the characters. You root for them and wish they (Protagonist) were in your circle of friends.

Plot is great, as always, but he spent way too much time (the first 20% of the book, and then more later) locked in a dark room.

I remember Frances saying he was careful with his language because the "Queen Mother" read all his books - he was also her jockey. Every tale he spins is a different aspect of racing, and all are wonderful. He and his wife will always be in present tense to me.

I am a great fan of Dick Francis's books and have read all of his 40+ books at least twice; many of them more than that. I would rank this one probably last of all his books, although that is still not saying much compared to many other authors. This one is the story of a...See more
I am a great fan of Dick Francis's books and have read all of his 40+ books at least twice; many of them more than that. I would rank this one probably last of all his books, although that is still not saying much compared to many other authors. This one is the story of a clever accountant who is also an amateur jockey who finds himself getting habitually kidnapped. I find that when I finish the book each time, the part that stays with me most is the long drawn out stay of our hero in the sail locker aboard a boat during his first sojourn being kidnapped. Very annoying. Of course, by the time I read it again 10 years later, I've forgotten... It is frankly, the most boring of Mr Francis's books.

"Few match Francis for dangerous flights of fancy and pure, inventive menace."
BOSTON HERALD
Roland Britten, accountant and champion steeplechase jockey, wakes in darkness with his hands tied. He has no idea where he is or what is happening, and still he manages an escape -- until he is recaptured, and the deadly cat and mouse game proceeds....
Dick Francis, a former jockey, brings his experience of racing and life around the racetrack to his mysteries. (And so far Francis is a three-time winner of the Edgar Award for writing the best mystery of the year.) This horse racing background is appealing to my market area of Southern California. Racing is a popular sport amongst Southlanders.
