Veteran NBA Star Dick Barnett Honored with Lifetime Achievement Award

New York, October 2023 — Dick Barnett, the legendary shooting guard and two-time NBA champion with the New York Knicks, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the National Basketball Retired Players Association (NBRPA) in a ceremony last night. The event, held at Madison Square Garden, celebrated Barnett’s illustrious career and his lasting impact on the game.

Barnett, now 87, played 14 seasons in the NBA, becoming famous for his unorthodox but effective jump shot, famously dubbed the 'Fall Back Baby' due to his signature leg kick. He was a key member of the Knicks’ 1970 and 1973 championship teams, playing alongside legends like Willis Reed, Walt Frazier, and Bill Bradley.

'Dick Barnett was the epitome of clutch,' said Frazier in a heartfelt tribute. 'His scoring ability and leadership were crucial to our success.'

Beyond his playing days, Barnett earned a doctorate in education and has been an advocate for athlete education and social justice. In his acceptance speech, Barnett reflected on his journey, saying, 'Basketball gave me a platform, but education gave me purpose. I hope today’s players use their voices for change.'

The Knicks organization also announced plans to retire Barnett’s No. 12 jersey next season, cementing his legacy as one of the franchise’s all-time greats.

Fans and former teammates cheered as Barnett, ever the showman, ended the night with his trademark phrase: 'Fall back, baby!'
