PRINCESS Diana was catapulted into the spotlight ahead of her royal wedding and went on to become one of the most famous princesses of all time.
But what was Diana like before her high-profile marriage to Prince Charles and what kind of childhood did she have?
Diana was born on July 1, 1961, to Edward John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer, and Frances Shand Kydd - who later divorced in 1969.
This means Diana would have celebrated her 60th birthday on July 1, 2021.
Diana hailed from the county of Norfolk as she was born at Park House, in Sandringham.
The fourth of five children, her family has been closely allied with the British monarchy for generations.
Her education therefore conditioned her to respond to the royal etiquette accordingly.
She grew up at Althorp House in Northamptonshire until she married Prince Charles in 1981 (they even met at Althorp House).
Diana had an aristocratic upbringing, and according to her former nanny Mary Clarke, she was a “happy” and “helpful” child.
Mary wrote: “Diana had a happy secure childhood.
“From the moment I met her and worked with the family, I saw she was helpful, laughing, exuberant, loved by both her parents, and the apple of her father’s eye.”
However, her brother Charles - the current Earl Spencer - said that Diana’s childhood was actually less happy than Mary portrayed.

In a 2020 interview in The Sunday Times , Charles said that Diana felt abandoned when her mum left their dad for wallpaper tycoon Peter Shand Kydd, and felt torn with the custody battle that followed.
He said: “While she [Frances] was packing her stuff to leave, she promised Diana she’d come back to see her. Diana used to wait on the doorstep for her, but she never came.”
The late princess told royal biographer Andrew Morton her mother Frances was "always crying" because of vicious rows with John, the former Earl of Spencer.
The couple split when Diana was seven.
Diana did not perform well academically and failed her O-levels twice.
However, she showed musical talent as a pianist, studied ballet and tap dance and was a skilled diver.
Diana was remembered by her Silfield Private School headmistress, Jean Lowe, for her kindness to younger children, animals and helpfulness, but not for academics.
She also attended West Heath Girls' School in Kent and all-girls boarding school Riddlesworth Hall School near Thetford.
She may later have lived in a palace and worn diamonds at balls, but Diana started off as a cleaner for just £1 an hour before she married Prince Charles.
In his book Diana: In Her Own Words, Royal biographer Andrew Morton reveals the late princess regularly did the washing up, hoovering, dusting, ironing and washing at her sister Sarah Spencer's flat.
Sarah, who dated Prince Charles before he began a relationship with Diana, bestowed the occupation on her younger sibling to tie up "loose ends" in her working week.
The flat was situated in Elm Park Lane, Chelsea, and Sarah shared it with her pal Lucinda Craig Harvey - who felt awkward about Diana cleaning up after them.
As well as tending to her sister's flat, Diana was also spending several days at the Young England kindergarten in Pimlico, where she taught the children to paint, draw and dance.
Victoria Wilson and Kay Seth-Smith, who ran the nursery school, were "impressed by her rapport" with the kids.
On Tuesdays and Thursdays, Diana looked after Patrick Robinson, the son of an American oil executive, a job which she "adored" according to Morton.
When a young Lady Diana Spencer wed the future King of England, Prince Charles, it was deemed a fairy tale come to life.
We all know that the marriage didn't last, but before that, the couple had the most spectacular wedding which was watched by millions of people all around the world.
Princess Diana started a relationship with Prince Charles when she was just 18.
However, Charles and Diana met years before when she was 16 in November 1977 when he was 29 and dating her sister Sarah.
Following a whirlwind romance, the pair married when Lady Di was just 20 and he was 32.
The wedding of Prince Charles and Lady Diana Spencer took place on Wednesday, July 29, 1981 at St Paul's Cathedral.

Even in her early years, she was no stranger to the aristocracy.
Although Princess Diana rose to sky-scraping levels of fame (many credit her 1983 tour of Australia with helping her ascension to stardom ), when Prince Charles met her , she was Lady Diana Spencer, a 16-year-old who he described as "jolly and amusing." Born on July 1, 1961 in Norfolk, England, Princess Diana grew up adjacent to the aristocracy. Though later in life, prior to her royal duties, she took modest service jobs as a cleaner for her sister's apartment and a part-time kindergarten teacher, that was, according to The Diana Chronicles author Tina Brown "a normal part of life as a 'Sloane Ranger,'" the term for Diana's clique of wealthy friends. "Slumming it was part of the inverted cachet of the Sloane Ranger world, since it also announced that you didn't depend on your job for either money or status," Brown wrote.
Season four of Netflix's historical drama The Crown focuses in part on the early years of Lady Diana Spencer's life and her transition into Princess Diana. If you're interested in getting an even fuller picture of young Diana, here's a round-up of photographs depicting Diana before she became the People's Princess.

See photos of Princess Diana as a child, with family, and with her many precious pets.
Engaged at 19 and married at 20, Princess Diana's childhood ended much sooner than the average woman's in England and Wales. But before her fairytale wedding , Lady Diana Spencer lived a relatively quiet life that involved piano lessons, odd jobs, precious pets, and a very '70s bridesmaid dress. Browse our collection of rarely-seen photos to get a glimpse into the icon's life and legacy, including life as a child, time spent with her family and more right through her engagement to Prince Charles.
Here are Diana’s parents, Viscount Althorp and the Honorable Frances Roche at their wedding at Westminster Abbey. Their marriage later ended in divorce in 1969.
Born Diana Frances Spencer on July 1, 1961, the future royal grew up in a noble family on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk.
Diana wore this 19th century gown for her christening. It was displayed in summer 1999 at Althorp, the Spencer family’s estate near Northampton.
Located on the Queen's own property, Diana's childhood home of Park House put her in elite circles from an early age.
Her parents Frances and Edward Althorp had three other children: daughters Sarah and Jane, and son Charles. They also had a son named John who died shortly after his birth.
In this picture from her family album, a cherub-faced Diana, age 3, is at Park House , her birthplace in Sandringham.
"From her childhood, Diana had had the feeling that she was destined for something special," wrote biographer Sarah Bradford . " There was never a chance that she would have, as people have surmised, settled down and led the life of a country gentleman's wife."
This sweet drawing shows little Lady Diana in November 1965, drawn by society artist Aniela Pawlikowska , who frequently drew her and her siblings as children.

This family album picture of Diana shows her in Cadogan Place Gardens , London, in the summer of 1968.
In a picture taken at her grandparents' 50th wedding anniversary, Diana (in the knee-high socks) stands with her brother, sisters and father, "Johnnie" Althorp (back right).
Diana lived a very quiet life until her parents' bitter 1969 divorce made tabloid headlines, the Washington Post reported . Here, the 9-year-old enjoys a game of croquet while on vacation in West Sussex.
She continued to live in Park House with her father until she left for boarding school in the fall of 1970.
Described as a "shy and quiet" child, Diana allegedly told her father upon their separation, "If you love me, you won't leave me here," according to the new book Remembering Diana .
Diana’s school uniform, toy pedal car, and trunk were later displayed at the family estate after her death. The memorial was closed in 2014, when the items from the exhibit were passed to her sons, William and Harry.
As a student, Diana particularly excelled at piano and ballet, and received a special award for community service, the Royal Household website states.
This family album picture shows Diana on the Isle of Uist in the Western Isles, Scotland.
The teen (with some very '70s denim!) kept a pet pony named "Scuffle." By 1975, she would become Lady Diana Spencer after her father inherited the title of Earl Spencer.
Althorp House , built in 1508, was Diana's family’s estate in Northamptonshire. She moved here in 1975 when her grandfather died, and her father inherited the Earldom.
Right around the time she attended a Swiss finishing school, Diana served as a bridesmaid at her sister Lady Jane Spencer's London wedding. At this point she had already met Prince Charles — when he was dating her other sister, Lady Sarah.
In 1980, the heir apparent started taking a serious interest in the 19-year-old as a potential bride. Dian
