EXCLUSIVE: Two construction workers apparently got up close and personal with Princess Diana .
British author Tom Quinn recently released a new book titled “Kensington Palace: An Intimate Memoir from Queen Mary to Meghan Markle,” where he spoke to those who worked for the British royals over the years. It was during his talks with palace insiders that Quinn learned some surprising stories about the Princess of Wales .
“It’s surprising,” Quinn told Fox News. “I was more surprised than anyone when I discovered -- you know, there are so many stories about the late Diana, Princess of Wales. I thought, ‘Well, there can’t be many more that people haven’t heard.’ But in talking to various people, I found some wonderful stuff.”
According to Quinn, Diana used to enjoy sunbathing in the buff in her rooftop garden of Kensington Palace, where she believed the area was safe from hovering helicopters and pesky paparazzi.

“She loved sunbathing,” said Queen. “This was the ‘90s. There wasn’t so much worry about cancer scares and so on. She used to sunbathe on a flat roof at Kensington Palace.”
According to the book, Diana’s palace aides warned the royal that many choppers did have high-resolution binoculars. However, Diana felt secure in her personal haven away from the public eye -- at least until something went wrong.
“Somebody had done something with one of the screens,” Quinn explained. “There were small trees in troughs around the flat roof and she hadn’t noticed it had been taken away. So she stood up with no clothes on and then immediately realized two builders who were working a hundred yards away. She was eye to eye with them. They’d seen her standing up and no clothes on. And the two builders immediately just bowed and turned away.”
A footman later noted, “They may have just been builders, but they were gentlemen all the same.”
But not all the stories Quinn discovered about Diana, a royal who relished dressing up in disguise to enjoy a sense of normalcy outside of the palace, were comical. Palace insiders also alleged that Diana and her then-husband Prince Charles were often heard arguing from their Kensington Palace apartments.

A former communications staffer alleged, “You could hear them rowing almost from the day they moved in.”
Quinn wasn’t surprised by the claims.
“They were almost maneuvered together because she was from a very ancient English family,” he explained. “And Charles needed someone who was young [who] could have children. I’m not sure they were well-suited, but they were maneuvered together by the royal establishment.
The quarrels were purportedly over Charles’ alleged mistress, Camilla Parker-Bowles .
“If you look at the film of the wedding day, there’s a tension and unease,” said Quinn. “… Camilla and Charles had a relationship before Diana and I think Diana rather naively thought that the relationship would end. It was never going to happen… Camilla actually encouraged [Charles] to marry Diana because they thought Diana would be complacent. She was timid. They thought she would just accept the fact that Charles and Camilla would carry on seeing each other.”

“They completely underestimated her,” Quinn continued. “In fact, someone said to me that if you look very carefully at the wedding film, you can see Diana glance across because Camilla was actually there in the church when they got married… You can see from the outset that Charles and Diana's marriage was doomed because the cracks were there from the beginning.”
The couple divorced in 1996. And while the relationship came to an end, Quinn said that her boyfriend Dodi Fayed gave her a sense of happiness during the last year of her life.
Diana passed away in 1997 at age 36 from injuries she sustained from a car crash in Paris.
“I think Dodi made the last year of her life happier than they would have been,” said Quinn. “The royal family certainly disapproved. The establishment was very nervous about this [relationship]. I think the royal family was in despair, to some extent, because this wasn’t something they could control. And Dodi was trying desperately to be accepted in royal circles.”

Quinn alleged that aristocratic advisors of the British royal family “looked down” at Fayed.
“I think they were slightly exasperated with the whole Diana situation,” she said. “I think they saw her, to some extent, as a bit of a loose cannon. They didn’t know what she would do next. And they felt it was unsuitable that she should be going out with Dodi.”
However, Quinn shared that Diana, who was free from an unhappy marriage, was eager for what the future held for her, both publicly and personally.
“The thing above all else that the royal family wants to try to do and feels it has to do is control every situation,” he said. “And they couldn’t with Diana… When Diana fell in love, it tended to be incredibly passionate. She lost all sense of restraint. And I think that happened with Dodi… But people really did underestimate her.”

Diana attempted to lure Prince Charles from the clutches of love-rival Camilla Parker Bowles’ by buying naughty underwear.
She planned to wear the sexy undies at a party attended by Camilla Parker Bowles - but her plan backfired and she was left shattered as she realised her marriage was irretrievable, it was claimed today.
According to the Daily Mail as she stood in front of her dressing room mirror wearing the provocative pieces, Charles smashed her hopes of a reconciliation when he looked at her and said: “You look ridiculous.”
However Diana attended the Indian-themed party at Ormeley Lodge, a Georgian house on the edge of Richmond Park, with her husband and even confronted Camilla over the affair.
Diana’s former Scotland Yard bodyguard Ken Wharfe accompanied the couple to the party.
He said, “When we got there it was a bit like one of those awkward scenes from Downton Abbey.
“Everyone was in total shock at seeing Diana there as they were his friends, not hers.
“I almost couldn’t bear to see her humiliated in front of so many people. I felt very uncomfortable for her.”
When Diana found Charles sitting with Camilla and a male friend, she took the opportunity to ask to speak with Mrs Parker Bowles, warning her to leave her husband alone.
As revealed by the Diana Tapes aired in Channel 4’s documentary last week, the princess said: “I would just like you to know that I know exactly what is going on.
“I’m sorry I’m in the way. It must be hell for both of you... don’t treat me like an idiot.”
Camilla’s extraordinary response, as related by the princess, was to ask, “What more could you want? You’ve got all the men in the world falling in love with you and you’ve got two beautiful children.”
But Diana said: “I want my husband.”
Diana later told friends that was the night she realised her marriage was over.

In tapes recorded of Princess Diana by her voice coach she talks of how her and Charles only had sex once every three weeks and that her own parents never told her that they loved her
Princess Diana shared intimate details of her sex life with Prince Charles in controversial tape recordings which will be broadcast by Channel 4 this weekend.
In extraordinary footage, the royal described their love life as 'odd' and claimed that they only slept together once very three weeks.
She also revealed that her husband stopped having sex with her after the birth of Harry , their second child.
And she told how there was nobody there to comfort her as her marriage fell apart – insisting even her own family didn’t love her.
Diana made the astonishing revelations to former voice coach Peter Settelen during a series of private video-taped interviews which are being screened by Channel 4.
Asked about her sexual relationship with Charles, Diana replies: “Well there was. There was, there was.
"But it was odd. Very odd. It was there then it fizzled out about seven years ago. Six years? Well, seven was Harry, it’s eight.
“There was never a requirement for it from his case. Sort of a once every three weeks look about it…And then I followed a pattern.
“He used to see his lady once every three weeks. Before we got married.”
Diana also talks about her husband’s affair with his now wife Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
She tells Settelen: “I remember saying to my husband, you know, ‘Why, why is this lady around?’
“And he said, ‘Well, I refuse to be the only Prince of Wales who never had a mistress’.’’
The interviews took place in late 1992 and early 1993 and were broadcast in America in 2004.
In one tape segment Diana is seen sitting in an armchair at Kensington Palace talking about the collapse of her 11-year marriage to Charles.
She says: “There was just nobody to…to physically scream at, or someone to put their arms around me and just listen.
"My parents never said they loved me.’’
Settelen asks: “So, you never knew that anyway?”
Touching her cheek, she replies: “No, no. No idea. There was always a kiss there. There was no hugs or anything like that.”
Diana recalls how she first met the Prince of Wales – at his close uncle Lord Mountbatten’s funeral when she was 19.
She says: “I said to him, ‘You must be so lonely. It’s pathetic watching you walking up the aisle with Lord Mountbatten’s coffin in front’. It’s ghastly. ‘You need someone beside you’. Ugh. Wrong word. Whereupon he leaped upon me and started kissing me and everything.
“And I thought ‘Waah…’ You know. This isn’t what people do. He was all over me for the rest of the evening. Followed me around, “Everything. A puppy.
"And, um, yeah, I was flattered, but puzzled.’’
Speaking of their first dates, she reveals: “He wasn’t consistent with his courting abilities. He’d ring me up every day for a week, and then he wouldn’t speak to me for three weeks. Very odd.
“And I accepted that. I thought ‘Fine. Well, he knows where I am if he wants me.’
“And then the thrill when he used to ring was so immense and intense. Drive the other three girls in my flat crazy. But, no, it was all…It was odd.’’
After meeting actor Settelen through a mutual friend, Diana and he recorded 20 interviews.
Settelen, who was helping the princess improve her public speaking skills, had vowed never to sell the tapes.
But in 2004, the former confidant passed on 83 minutes of the footage to NBC News for an undisclosed price.
The channel broadcast the interviews in a two-part documentary called Diana Revealed.
In an interview, Mr Settelen said Diana was a ‘frightened woman... shellshocked by a bad marriage’.
Paul Burrell has become the latest former member of her inner circle to criticise Channel 4’s decision to screen a documentary featuring private tapes.
The former butler, whom Diana called her ‘rock’, has described the programme as ‘seedy’ and like ‘raiding her diary’.
This week one of Diana’s close friends, Rosa Monckton, called for a boycott of the ‘intrusive’ Channel 4 documentary, Diana: In Her Own Words, which is due to be screened on Sunday night.
Channel 4 said: "The excerpts from the tapes recorded with Peter Settelen have never been shown before on British television and are an important historical source.
"We carefully considered all the material used in the documentary and, though the recordings were made in private, the subjects covered are a matter of public record.
"This unique portrait of Diana gives her a voice and places it front and centre at a time when the nation will be reflecting on her life and death."
